Wrong forum. Sorry, I’d be grateful if a mod could move – ?

Weirdly, I am doing the same 650B mod to the exact same frame – a 2004 explosif – can’t wait to have it running

Just push that budget a little bit and get something really nice 😉

‘The Industry’ that you guys seem to want to denigrate, is a genuine force of innovation and improvement.

Without ‘the industry’ – you wouldn’t have bikes & kit.

650B had its renaissance about 6 years back when Mr. Kirk Pacenti was looking for a way to use the largest possible wheel-size – while retaining time-proven MTB geometry.. having become frustrated with the design compromises necessary to fit 29″ wheels.

Myself and others have been riding and pushing 650B for these last few years – lobbying the big guys to get on board and take up the standard. Most haven’t wanted to know – Fox even forbade the use of 650B wheels in it’s forks. The risk of confusing the consumer (and the retailer) with 3 different wheel-sizes was also a major concern.

I, for one, am chuffed to bits that 650B is finally getting it’s day in the sun.. Why would you not want the choice??

The ride is very similar to 26″ bikes – all the whippy-ness but smoother and grippier IMO

I was with the LCC until last month .. perhaps I should refresh my membership.

The accident was at post-code se20 8bd – On google street-view you can see how narrow the lane is without entering the chevrons – esp. with a car blocking half of it.

The driver is ‘part time’ – but I’ve spoken to his employer and they are aware of the incident and claim to be “insured” – we’ll see.

Thanks for the advice so far

So it’s a case of me declaring “I’m hurt – pay me” then entering negotiations? I’m only looking to cover my costs really – but I don’t know what these companies typically ‘offer’ in these situations

A crack in the frame is a crack in the frame – regardless of whether the bike has been ridden or not.

Surely the issue is proving or disproving the overtightening

I’ve been riding 650B for over 3 years now. I figured it would eventually catch on – simply because it has no downsides. It allows for oodles of travel in a FS bike, and rolls better than a 26″

For those wondering about how it handles – Let me say this .. It feels nearly identical to riding a 26″ bike in terms of handling / cornering / sprinting etc. But it definitely rolls smoother – so you ride faster.

650b was resurrected by Kirk Pacenti – with a simple criteria.. Fed up with having to make design sacrifices around 29er frames to allow for the wheel size .. He wanted to use the largest wheel possible while MAINTAINING the angles (and thus the handling) of a 26″ wheel bike… Looking through the old standards – 650B fit the bill best.

With the future increasingly biased towards FS bikes – 29ers will evetually be consigned to XC race bikes and hardtails.

IMO – in ten years 70% of MTBs will be 650B .. And I don’t think we will see any more ‘standards’ emerge after this.

They’ll start calling it 27.5 soon too.

Thought so. The ferrous was made from OX platinum tubing IIRC.

Same kind of fate that befell made early Fat Chance’s in the UK – they just rot through

Was your gary fisher that rusted through the seat tube a ferrous 29er ?

Some steel tubing is thinner and more likely to rust through .. I imagine it’s also something to do with the alloy mix.

Before you feel too smug – I’d be careful with that Voodoo Limba frame..

The downtube tends to snap clean in two around the dt shifter mount… mine went with a pop on a road ride

That’s why the new ones have the curved downtubes

    In all seriousness

700c wheels on a MTB fork and frame, really?

Obscene isn’t it? But it’s becoming increasingly popular – god knows why .. they’ve even coined a term for them – ’29ers’

” Due to the potent combination of anticholinergic substances it contains, Datura intoxication typically produces effects similar to that of an anticholinergic delirium (as contrasted to hallucination): a complete inability to differentiate reality from fantasy; hyperthermia; tachycardia; bizarre, and possibly violent behavior; and severe mydriasis with resultant painful photophobia that can last several days. Pronounced amnesia is another commonly reported effect.[12]

No other psychoactive substance has received as many severely negative experience reports as has Datura. The overwhelming majority of those who describe their use of Datura find their experiences extremely unpleasant both mentally and physically and often physically dangerous

    Trippy !

Using canti brakes with v brake levers isn’t a good idea

Basically, you’ll be squeezing really hard.. and hardly stopping!

The threads are a lot shorter – you’ll be fine with a 68mm shell, but a 73mm shell is a no go (It’ll fit – just – but barely screw in on one side)

I guess: You’re in the drops, weight forward – back wheel is unweighted and loses grip slighty with the right/left motion of your legs.

a stiffer wheel would suffer this more than a flexy one.

    I run a 36t with an 11-34 cassette – but I do have bigger (650B) wheels.

Fine most of the time round Yorkshire etc. am pretty fit so tend to power up climbs.

But would go down to 35t or 34t for an epic day in cumbria say..

I also did the ride & missed the feed station (never saw owt)

Longest time I’ve spent on a bike .. I hit the sea at 4:15am. No big problems except one puncture (despite me fitting new tyres for the event to prevent such an occurrence) and a semi-cramped up calf for 50 miles

Here’s a tip … Bromptons are rarely discounted, but Evans and CycleSurgery will knock 10% off anything in store with a valid LCC or CTC membership (which costs about 40 quid) .. All in all, if a brompton is #700 you save about 30 odd quid and get a cycling club membership for free.

One point of note – the brompton uses almost entirely proprietry (non-standard) parts.. but they are widely available and actually Very very cheap to buy (it’s the brompton branded accessories that cost).

With other folding bikes (inc. Dahon) if you break something .. you’ll be waiting for weeks for the supplier to special order it from foreign shores … and then it’ll be the wrong part!

They’re all pretty crap, so don’t be tempted to spend a lot…

    except bromptons, which are awesome

Mine wore through on the side edges of the ‘nose’ very quickly. Also had the glue fail on the underside of the rear.. letting the cover flap about.

I think they substitute longevity for low-weight. But I do find them supremely comfortable though!

    – Also on SDG now .. no such issues

I reckon I’m a pretty decent rider. I’ve riding daily for years so fitness is good

At MTB races I usually finish in the top 20% – but I could certainly improve upon that if I bothered to train properly or actually buy a race bike. I lose most of my places on the climbs but get them back on the descents

Good technical rider – Can ride Stainburn double black well enough.

Shit at jumps – as I don’t have the technique and don’t wish to break owt!

There’s a thread from London fixie forum LFGSS – that show-cases all the bikes that people have had coated from a rather good place in London – Armoutex – Not suggesting you have to use these guys but the thread is useful for seeing some real-world colours on bikes..
