You could concentrate on foods which have a higher protein content. This will help to give you the feeling of being “full” for longer (I’m not talking burgers and kebabs here!). The almond tip above is a good one as they contain a lot of good fats that help in digestion and also contain protein. You could also try green tea extract, CLA and chromium picolinate. All are said to help you feel satiated and stop the cravings for sugar/crap carbs. I take a protein shake by Lonsdale called Feed n’Lean. It contains all those I’ve mentioned but there are plenty more out there as well. I used to be a chocolate monster but don’t give it a second thought now.

In all seriousness, saddles are a very personal choice. Saying that I’ve always found a Fizik Gobi comfortable on anything to a half hour blat or an all day xc ride across the Island. Also consider a dropper post if you haven’t got one already! Saves your undercarriage if you case anything on downhill sections!

Brassneck, not that thick at all really as the plan is to test this on a treadmill. Personally I can’t run for toffee and get breathless relatively quickly. However put me in a boxing ring, ask me to do circuits or quick loops on a mountain bike and I can do this a lot easier. VO2 max is the volume of oxygen taken up in the blood in parts per million over a given effort level. Should it not be tested after a BA hot wear in a sterile environment? This would seem more relevant, especially if it is going to determine whether a firefighter ultimately loses his/her job!

Has anyone mentioned the fact the the new scheme the government are proposing in 2015 (that they are demanding we sign up to now or it will be retracted) has no defined contributions? So they can’t even tell you how much you will be paying? I certainly wouldn’t sign up for a loan or mortgage in this way and am damn well not gonna do this with my pension!! What’s stopping them coming back in 5-10 years time for another bite?

If your thinking of heading to Nant-y-Arian you may also want to consider the ‘Climachx’ at Machynlleth. Final descent is over 6km. Fully do-able on any bike!!

Bryn Bettws Lodge. Right on Y wall trail and the new Afan Bike Park is right outside the door. Food is geared for mtbers (not fancy and lots of it!!). Always stay here when we go to Afan. Oh, and its got a well stocked bar! 😆

Avon SSS is effective as a midge repellent. It’s what the SAS lads use when training ops in Scottish Highlands. I’d probably agree with above comment as to its use as a mosquito repellent and go for a dedicated product if travelling to Central Europe tho.

You’ve also got Nodes Point Campsite and Whitecliff bay but agree that grange farm would be better option as on south side of Island nearer to bridleway network and forest. I even think they allow bonfires here. If you’re in any need of advice on trails but an OS map and take it into Wight Mountain bike shop in Newport. The guys in there will highlight all the best trails for you. They may even show you some that’s not marked! Oh and you may endear yourself to the locals by spelling it ‘Isle of Wight’. 😉
