Thread must be in code ??? Anybody worked it out?

We sometimes think too much, take a step back for a while. Asking on a forum usually will create even more confusion. If it were my money it would be the YT Tues – such a capable bike for the money and getting all the good reviews.

    Nice hijack mildred.

Well I converted a set of Recon Gold RL Solo Air from 100mm to 120mm recently. I got the instructions from their website, but it does involve dismantling and removing spacers from the internals, which means refilling with shock oil and pumping them back up. Quite easy though. I suspect yours are similar. Appatently many of these forks can be changed form 80/100/120 just by adding or removing the internal spacers. If yours are coils though, I don’t know.

Trigger shifters for me all the way. Last time I used twisties was Gripshifts about 15 years ago. Thought I’d try them but they only stayed on a couple of weeks, didn’t get on with them at all. Since then I have always used Shimano triggers as I don’t particularly like Sram either. XT on one bike, Deore on two others. Like others have said it could be mainenance, spacing and angle that you are having problems with. I see many people butting them up against the brake levers, for a few years now I have been spacing them away from the levers and have been much more comfortable as I have large hands. Also the angle I have them at suits me though my son doesn’t like the angle – everyone to his own, its a personal thing.

Cheers, got the e-mail and PDF, thanks for scanning and sending it so quickly. Yes, its a keeper though strictly speaking its too small for me but couldn’t resist it – it was a minter!

Frame, Holzfella 2×9 crankset and bottom bracket, Titec seat post and headset cost me about £60. The guy who sold it had already auctioned a lot of the components from it before I bought the frame so I built it up out of stuff left over from my Giant Anthem upgrade, just bought new Deore brakes. Prob cost me about £200 to put it together. So pleased with it, it’s really nice and don’t think I’ll ever see another on the trails!

DezB – its a skeletal head tube the inner tube of which can be rotated to alter the head angle 2 positions to give a 1.5 degree (i think) change. Its that head tube that attracted me to it in the first place – a bit different!

Been using various cheap skate shoes for a while but a few weeks ago bought a pair of 5:10 Spitfires @£52. Big, big improvement in grip and sole stiffness making them far more comfortable for longer rides, so in my experience cheapness may be a false economy. Using with Wellgo B185 pedals (£30 and 324g) and B143 pedals (£35 and 385g)which are standing up to plenty of abuse.

RS expensive and you’ll probably have to buy a box. There are several flea bay suppliers selling stainless and titanium bolts a couple of which I’ve used. Can’t remember which ones right now but if you do a search on there you will find.

Not sure about 2010, but my 2011 X4 was 175 which seems to be the most common factory fitted length.

Just need to get out and ride more. Built three bikes this year and they are proving to be a little underused – must justify their existence!! 😉

Me? I’ve finally found the brakes that suit me. M4 Tech Evo front and X2 Tech Evo rear, Hope 183mm floating rotor front and rear, Hope adapters – now down from 203mm Shimano and much better for power and feel.

Website these days is usually a potential customers first point of call. If you can’t get the spec right there people will surf right past on their way to YT, Giant, Lapierre etc. Crazy, should be proofed correctly before making the page live.

Spec doesn’t make me look twice at this. Even taking into account the Alivio typo its got a wide range of component quality from Deore brakes to the token XT rear mech and i’d want far better than a Recon Gold on the front for this money – Revelation or Fox would go down better at this price point. Maybe as a frame only I would consider it. Oh and whats the weight.

oops link didn’t work but you get my gist 🙂

That link from the White site is confusing. GXP uses external bearing BB. PF30 is push fit. If you can see external bearing cups on your bike it is GXP. as far as I know GXP is not compatible with Shimano Hollowtech 2 so you may be limited to GXP BB’s.

Deore 596’s, although good brakes and highly recommended at their price point, don’t come anywhere near the performance and adjustability of the Hope M4/X2 setup. I use both on different bikes.

Been using Fox Antifreeze gloves for a couple of years now. If your hands get too warm, pull out the liners.

I used a combination of M4’s on front and X2’s on rear, excellent performance and adjustability. The combination costs £218 from Merlin. Oh and I didn’t look back either.

Me and the missus have separate laptops, turned out to be a good investment. Also as I work mostly from home, I receive all the many and varied packages and am able to smuggle them into the workshop where they ‘disappear’ while she is in work.

    Hope she doesn’t read this!!

Go for Hope Tech Evo M4 front and X2 on rear from Merlin. I did recently on my Anthem X – excellent brakes, I’ll never need better (if that’s possible). However they can be a little awkward to use with some shifters due to their construction. I used the Hope XT shifter mounts which mounts shifters on the brake lever clamps. A very elegant and weight saving solution.
