Yep realised that now I’ve seen a vid as it wasn’t walled on both sides, only on our right on path I descended. It was extemely rocky and steep! What a nugget!!! :o

Still was impressed with the Boardman comp Epicon forks, they took it in their stride no probs.

Sounds like you might have cut the corner and done the footpath instead of the BW. The bridleway is a walled lane in the lower section with a switchback halfway down, that would show up as a V on the map, the footpath straight-lines that corner.

I was done in by the end of the climb up to Edale Cross, so not surprised if I missed the Bridleway. The path was brutally steep though, how does this compare to the Bridleway path?? The bottom of the bit we rode came to a stream.

The ramblers were gobsmacked we descended on a bike down it, they said we were ‘insane’….I felt insane at the end of it looking back up :D

EDIT – Just found a video on Vimeo of Jacobs Ladder descent and that definitely wasn’t the path we took :o It also looks a lot less steep but hard to tell on cam.

Got back from the Peaks today and we did the Kinder Circuit from Edale to Hollins Cross, Mam Tor, Rushup Edge, Roych, Hayfield, Edale Cross, Jacobs Ladder and back to Edale.

Was an awesome ride and I particularly enjoyed the descent from Rushup Edge to Roych but I particularly hated the climb up to Edale Cross from Coldwell Clough which was brutal and ended up walking a good portin of this after getting cramp in my leg.

Was just looking at my Strava download and I’m a little confused….We descended down what I believe was Jacobs Ladder after Edale Cross which was v steep and rocky. I managed to do nearly all of it on my hardtail which I was pleased about but when looking at the route on Strava it doesn’t look like we went down a ‘V’ shaped track that shows on the map? There was some walkers at the bottom videoing me as they were impressed and said it was Jacobs Ladder so whats this ‘V’ we didn’t appear to go down??

I have just bought myself a pocket stove, yet to fire it up, but have used a bush cooker quite a bit and really like the wood fuel option, the pocket stove just seems smaller and lighter, look fwd to getting it lit.

Let me know what you think of it as I’m considering buying one of these. Pics would be good too ;)

On paper its a fairly well balanced team given players available. Ok so Ricards for RB and maybe Lennon for LW positions but overall not too bad IMO. I like the addition on Oxlade-Chamberlain and hope he gets a run out rather than warming the bench like Walcott did previously.

We all have our opinions on who else should be here so who would you have liked to see in the team?

despite the damp squib that was the season just finished.

I don’t think last season can be described as a damp squib assuming you mean the Premier League.

Expectations for England are low for Euro 2012, so where would you expect us to finish to classify the tournament a success for us?

I’d say Quarter finals would be a good achievement with this squad and given group they are in, Semi’s would be punching above our weight, Final….who knows, we would have to have had some luck somewhere and avoided penalty shoot-outs!

Lets face it most fans have got low expectations of the England team so would have been nice to have gone with a more youthful team but Roy’s come in late and looks to have gone with mostly experienced internationals with a couple of additions.

Would rather have seen Carrick than Barry too.

Lets at least be thankful that there’s no place for Heskey! :D

feel a bit sorry for Les Ferdinand

    Isn’t he a bit old?

Last played for England in 1998 :D

I think Defoe is an odd choice given lack of first team opportunities this year, Carrol provides an aerial threat and I’d take him over Crouch.

I agree, would like to have seen Richards at RB

Yes, Jack Butland is Birminghams GK

We loved the Ladybower classic loop and the views heading across to Whinstone Lee Tor were awesome. If the Edale loop is anywhere near as good as this circuit I think we will be sitting back in the Old Nags Head pub with some big grins on our faces, oh and probably a celebratory pint!

Looking forward to it, just hope the weather holds up although it sounds reasonably rideable whatever the conditions.

Thanks all. I think we will give the Edale loop a try in a clockwise direction so we head back down the Jacobs Ladder descent to Edale. Makes sense as we will be camping in Edale

Ok, will probably avoid Cutgate then, especially as there’s more rain forecast this week.

Wow thanks for all the replies lads. Not managed to log on since my last post and was surprised to see so many responses. Plenty of food for thought and thanks to the 2 lads that emailed their routes for viewing, much appreciated. Will take a proper look shortly and see what they’re about :)

I quite fancy the Edale loop with Jacobs descent that’s mentioned several times above. No mention of Cut Gate above, is that ride not quite as good?

    Cheers

How rideable is Jacobs Ladder on a hardtail? I’m sure we would get down but is it much harder than say Haggs Farm descent?

I’ve got the same one as Xiphon and Cumbrianmonkey except its badged under another name. Awesome stand that makes washing the bike and general maintenance so much easier!

Yes, had exactly the same problem with the lever which rendered it next to useless. I bought this one as a replacement and had no such issues…

I swear by the Clif Shot Blocks, especially the strawberry ones. If I get to the stage where I’m tiring I eat a couple of cubes and feel much better again. 6 in a pack should last you a couple of hours and bonus they taste better than most gels too :)

    Thanks CraigW, v useful.

The attraction of the Etrex was initially the low cost but I’m wondering if its just false economy and I’d be better off spending twice the cost and get the Edge 200?

Still interested in hearing from Etrex H owners please :)

Just remember to pick up a new chain/cassette afterwards cannock grit kills bikes!!

2nd this….trails are like a grinding paste when wet and they finished off my brake pads in 1 ride

    Hi Ozzie, thanks for your post. Ok, so I’ve owned the Comp for 4 months now and ridden it a good number of miles. Here’s what I like/dislike;

    Like
    – Decent 120mm air fork which soaks up the technical stuff well with lockout and rebound adjustment
    – Fairly lightweight for its price tag
    – SRAM X5 groupset is smooth and does its job well
    – Avid Elixir brakes provide decent stopping power (also see dislikes)
    – Decent frame and finishing kit (Ritchey I believe?)
    – Wide bar, short stem works well and provides good handling
    – Fizik Gobi styled Boardman own saddle is v comfy
    – Looks awesome IMO – gets lots of positive reaction from fellow riders

    Dislikes
    – Pedals are crap but then aren’t most stock pedals
    – Resin disc pads die quickly, replaced mine with sintered pads
    – Avid brakes feel quite spongey compared to some brakes (especially my last Deores)
    – Cable rubs around the fork crown badly – fit some Lizard Skin patches before you ride it (I found out the hard way)

Overall I’ve had no regrets buying this bike and rate it highly for the XC riding I do. It’s capable of doing the technical stuff well and rides quick due to its lightweight feel. Would I recommend it? Hell yeah, for the money I think it’s hard to beat!

Generally I use my Garmin Etrex H to record rides, it’s bomb proof and way cheaper than any smartphone to replace. Sometimes it’s on my bar or in my bag, don’t really need it while riding unless I’m using it to navigate too.

Out of interest Nick, does the Etrex record rides on to Garmin Connect? Also, how does it perform for basic navigation?

It will work just fine in your pocket/pack if you don’t feel compelled to read your current speed, distance etc. If you do then either get a mount for the iphone or Garmin Edge 200. Strava on phone in pocket works for me :)

Those loads of trails around there, depends on what you’re looking for? This book has lots of them. Would recommend the Bakewell Circuit.

As above a tenner or so is more than enough to get decent grips. Ones from Superstar are £8ish and decent as are ODI Ruffian or Charge Sponge if you like them slim.

Which bike is it? On my Boardman comp the lockout switch on the top just pulls off but I suspect its not the same Epicon fork as the hex head is under the switch.
