I’ve always liked the ktm 990smt, but expensive. On the cheaper end of the scale, the Versys is a capable bike and handles bumps / dirt pretty well, nothing too gnarly though (but plenty of vids on youtube to see…)

Or something more dedicated – KLR 650 😀

Been on Zwift for a couple of days. I have an oldish Elite Crono Fluid trainer so went down a fairly cheap route and got the Wahoo Blue SC. Works brilliantly and a lot of fun!

Previous to this I’ve only used the trainer indoors for a couple of months whilst recovering from an injury…but I can see myself using this weekly.

I’ve really never sweated so much, even though I commute most days on the bike. It’s a great tool 🙂

I have some new Madison Addict shorts – I like the fit in general, although come up a bit longer than my other shorts, but that’s ok.

I commuted in them last week – about 50 mins of very heavy rain. My undershorts were slightly damp but not that bad – still not 100% waterproof though – I’m sure rain got through the zip! 🙂 Thighs were totally dry though so not bad, and they dry super fast.

Overall I like them, but don’t feel they are worth £60.

On and off in terms of diet – I found it a good way to force myself to eat healthier stuff, and it made shopping / cooking a bit more interesting. I’ll often crack and buy bacon once in a while at home, or if friends are going out for a meal I’ll not be fussy and will happily scoff a burger 🙂

Note, if you do go down the docker route, you can benefit from a ton of pre-created images, of which iperf already exists:

    https://hub.docker.com/r/networkstatic/iperf3/
https://hub.docker.com/r/mlabbe/iperf/ (based on alpine, so super lightweight)

-j = multicore support, so can be used to speed up compilations, although it’s really easy to kill a box when you give it a large value 😉

Solutions such as Docker (or Vagrant) are nice – essentially mean you don’t have to care so much about portability, and would provide an easy way to spin up isolated environments. There is some overhead though, but probably wouldn’t make much difference (at least if you use these environments to run both iperf / iperf3 tests).

They might be overkill though – if the release binaries aren’t available, you could try building from source statically, but you said you wanted to make use of the package manager, so that doesn’t really work.

I’m not sure if debian has something like Centos SCL, which are basically different repositories (which means you can often install different versions of packages alongside each other).

Another user of the Montane Minimus here which is a good lightweight jacket, and my goto jacket for everyday use.

    + Packs small
    + Keeps the wind off
+ Not boil in the back, and good pockets which vent well
+ Mostly waterproof (not 100% after an hours downpour for me).
+ Hood is excellent and one of the best I’ve tried

Another plus point is customer service. I had this jacket for about a year and the inside developed odd rips, which I think was due to it getting wet and using a rucksack together with a probable manufacturing fault. I emailed Montane and sent them some pics of the jacket, and they sent me a new jacket straight away, result ;]

I’m not sure how I would feel about using it for MTB mind, it’s very thin and I don’t think it would take kindly to falls or getting caught on branches etc ;]

Broke mine about 18 months ago – repaired on it’s own and now has a rather ugly looking bump.

I also broke my elbow on the same side in the same fall – that had to be pinned and set in a cast for some time, so I couldn’t do the best possible physio for the collarbone. That said, the collarbone feels fairly strong now, just an annoying bump, and a heavy rucksack digging in is sometimes annoying (cycling is 100% fine on it).

Collarbones are super painful when they break, but they do heal up fairly quickly usually 😀

Having it pinned = looks nicer, but my pinned elbow gives me some pain (i.e. putting elbow down on a hard surface) and I’m very wary of it, so given the choice, I’d rather let things heal naturally if they can 🙂

    A few times,

Scrambling on a mountain and got caught out, probably the most exhilarating moment of my life when I made it to a safe place.

Another time was when I had an bicycle accident in traffic – just remember coming off and going onto the other side of the road – incoming car bumper to my face! But stopped just in time 😀

A couple of motorbike moments too, 1 on the motorway where a car almost took me out, and 1 off-road going into a tree, but I got away with that big time 🙂

I’ve got those saddles on all my bikes as well…didn’t realise they look so odd 😛 But yeah, super comfy 🙂

Garmin Vivosmart HR here – it’s ok, although always causes a horrid rash on my wrist. I tend not to wear watches in general so haven’t noticed this as a problem in the past. Some barrier cream gets around this issue 🙂

I usually pair it up with my Edge 25 via ANT.

    I’ve got a Versys and a DRZ.

Versys is an excellent option – particularly like the comfort/up-right position and the 200+ tank range, however brakes could be better. It’s not something I would want to take on the green lanes (it’s fine on poo roads with potholes though). For everything else, it’s fantastic. If you fancied more poke then the KTM 950 would be on the top of my list.

If you want something that can do trails, the DRZ400S would work well – fairly light, and super fun (on and off-road). Comfortable around 65mph too – if getting the bike muddy on proper green lanes isn’t going to happen, then the SM version would be better.

The quietest trail bike I’ve owned was a CRF250L – it was fine on proper green lanes, and did the daily commute…I just found it a bit bland (certainly compared to the DRZ on road).

Tiger 800XC is another option, but it seems really expensive :/

How easy? I think it depends how you crash.

I broke my collarbone and my elbow by getting caught up in the pedals at about 5mph when pulling away from lights. A slow speed over the handlebars fall onto tarmac.

For whatever reason I didn’t put my hand out and went down on my elbow – which is probably why the collarbone broke too.

So if you fall, put your hand out 🙂

Supposedly when they break they heal up stronger than before, so get breaking 🙂

Made it to 34 (this year)…then bam. Back in Jan came of my road bike coming home from work (just a few mph, straight over the bars). Broken collarbone and broken elbow which is now plated. First time in hospital too.

It’s a fairly odd feeling. The collarbone was rather painful, and the clicking / crunching sound was a bit off putting. It’s healed now (in a rather ugly way). The elbow I didn’t even try to move until post surgery and removal of cast.

I’ve now got the fear of falling on it again – I actually came off the motorbike back in Aug doing some off-road stuff and it held up ..but I now know how vulnerable I am on the bike, and how annoying it is to fall off and hurt yourself 🙂

Have a look at http://www.bba-reman.com – they might be able to help.

Nope, but I don’t think I would enjoy commuting on it 5 days a week, I find the amount of concentration required a bit draining. I probably use the motorbike for road use once or twice a week, and always for longer trips – maybe twice a month.

You aren’t that safe whatever mode of transport you take – I was messed up and now have plates in my elbow due to a cycle incident (from about 2mph!).

I can’t say I get a real thrill from riding motorbikes on the road – off-roading is where I get my kicks now, although that’s not without injury either 😆

I would say be patient. 4 weeks is not long enough for a bone to heal.

There’s not much anyone can do unless you argue to have it plated – I imagine the NHS may go that route if there’s no union after 8 weeks (or there’s no sign of improvement via an X-ray)

There’s a few things you can do in the meantime – squeezy-ball/hand grips are good, and some people enjoy dosing up on various supplements (glucosamine and chondroitin). Once the bones union (assuming ithey do), then you should see good progress.

Don’t worry about physio either – the NHS will just give you a sheet of paper with a few exercises and tell you to come back in X weeks time. I’m not saying that’s bad…but don’t expect much more than that. Physio = slowly building up ROM / Strength and it’s 99% down to you.

Enjoy the nice bump! Did mine in Jan along with a broken elbow that got plated. Just keep it still. A sling is comfy but I didn’t have one for a few weeks as my arm was in a straight cast grrr.

I’m sitting here with a broken olecranon and a broken collarbone… got another 3 weeks in a cast on the arm…but getting on the turbo now. Bleh it’s so annoying, looking forward to the painful physio 🙂

sat here, week 2 with a broken (pinned) olecranon, broken collarbone and ribs too. I’ve managed to get on the turbo for a bit, but spend a good amount of time watching Netflix (love it!).

Also buying a few bits online, waiting on a montane gilet as I can’t get my cast into my current jackets 🙂

its ok mate, broke my elbow and collarbone last week. Know how you feel 🙁

On the plus side life was getting a bit boring and this presents a new challenge 😉

I’m also looking forward to my first proper scar after having a metal plate fitted 🙂

Age 34 had my first broken bones, first time under general anesthetic, first surgery and cast, first time signed off work, first time injecting self with some medical drugs…all last week 🙂 Guess this is the first big challenge of my life.

Looking at jumping ship from them too. They are just expensive :/

To be fair I’ve had no problems with them, and the internet speeds are great, however I’m paying about £80 a month for 60MB internet, M+ TV and Phone – I get sky sports too which is around £30 a month, but only use it for the F1 chan. I don’t use the phone either.

Talk talk can do the same (less internet speed) for way way cheaper….hmm hmm 🙂

Got my first mac (macbook pro) last month. Utterly love it – amazing battery live, amazing screen, funky light-up keyboard, wish I got one ages ago 🙂

I also run Ubuntu at work / home, so it’s not too different – for me, it’s just the hardware. Top notch! 🙂

I also have Direct Line for contents insurance, but also use their dedicated bicycle cover.

To be fair, they’ve paid out before after I’ve had an accident, so I can’t complain My bikes come in at less than 2k though…

Had Durano/Durano plus in the past. Not a great experience really, way too many punctures for my liking.

Now switched to Schwalbe Marathon Original GreenGuard (700x23c). Feel a bit slower, but not enough to make a different to my commute time. No punctures yet, chuffed with them 🙂

If I’ had known how much the public hated the fire service I would never have joined. I thought I was doing the right thing in transferring 12 years of my previous pension into the firefighters scheme, now it turns out I’m a greedy lazy bastard for thinking I should receive it when I was promised.

Quite a lot of the public are stupid, so don’t worry about it 🙂
