I'm sponsoring a mate who's doing the Kilimanjaro walk/hike/climb – probably same if not similar route to the celebrity one a few months back.

Now it looks to me like it's costing an utter fortune to just do the thing (flights/guides/kit).

So I now find myself wondering if they are in fact going to have any extra dosh to donate to charity, or if it will just end up one big holiday for him, oh well…not that bitter 🙂

Pretty sure you don't need an invite if you're in the UK these days.

    I always stay here: http://www.gillsidecaravanandcampingsite.co.uk/

I think it's the closest one for walks up Helvellyn and surrounding area.

It doesn't take bookings, but there's a ton of space.

The local shops/pubs are good, and it's about a 35min drive from Penrith, and is easily accessible via bus too.

I have a fair bit of respect for the guy, he’s certainly making the most out of his time on this planet, I reckon most of you guys would give an arm ‘n a leg to do what he does 🙂

As for his survival skills, supposedly he was a patrol medic and a survival instructor within the sas reserve – that’s no mean feat…

In wet, rainy and poor vis conditions it’s really quite dangerous…otherwise it’s all good.

It also has routes just of the ridge, but I think they’re more dodgy as it can be tricky to navigate back up in poor conditions.

You could try Swirrel edge first and give yourself a little warmer. I find it more fun anyway 🙂

That thing about 2 guys coming to his mothers house was Bullshite anyhow

Shame if it was, because this guy needs a good slap. Sorry, but having been scammed/mugged/robbed in the past, I know how much it hurts. I have nothing but hatred for such people. Time to go for a run and relax now 🙂

I work at a company developing software (mostly scientific apps & drivers) for Linux on machines ranging from large servers to RT embedded apps, and not a single dev uses Linux on the desktop.

I don’t understand? So they just boot into console and code away in vim all day? 🙂

About 75% of our devs use vim (I use vim/gvim), the rest probably use some graphical IDE. All of us make some use of the desktop mind – you would have to be very stubborn not too I think…

Edit – I’ve probably got the wrong idea of what you mean by ‘desktop’ 🙂 *tired*

Had the meeting of doom yesterday after a couple of months saying we’d be fine.

We find out on the 15th who goes and who doesn’t. It may not come to that, as my company are offering alternative schemes to try and save money (buy back holiday / 4 day week / sabbatical).

    Fingers crossed 🙁

If you decide to get it seen, get it seen at A&E, as that’s where the GP will send you anyway – in my experience.

Last time I went to A&E for an ankle injury it took about 1hr in the evening – depends where you live I guess.

    As for,

no it cant be a break or you wouldnt be able to walk on it

    – this is totally untrue.

Ligament damage can often be worse than a break too as well, although if it’s ligament damage it tends to swell up loads, and be very painful.

Anyway, when I went to A&E, they took an X-Ray. The gal that did it thought she spotted a slight fracture but the more experienced person thought otherwise, so I just got some crutches.

Here I am 5 months later, and it still hasn’t heeled up properly – I can run and stuff, but it’s often painful (spesh in the morning), and I don’t have full flexibility in it *weep*

Awesome! I’m toying with the idea of commuting into London, about 10 miles each way. I think this puts me of though, I think I’d be a nervous wreck 🙂

BTW I like 6:43, close to bumping into some road works 😛

Many websites like this are dodgy, lots of them are scams. They take your money and cannot guarantee tickets because they don’t have them in hand.

Check the terms & conditions too.

All sales are final. Since tickets are a one-of-a-kind item and not replaceable, there are no refunds, exchanges or cancellations.

    Ouch 😉

If you do decide to go for it (I really wouldn’t if I were you), make sure you pay by credit-card. That way, if they don’t supply your tickets you can claim back. Do not pay by debit card, there is no protection…

I also can’t stand restrictive sleeping bags.

I’ve got a Snugpak Softie Autumn Chrysalis (3 season). The sleeping bags in this range are great as they have a baffle zip that can be used to give you extra room. This is the only bag I’ve used so far that I feel comfortable zipping up, I used to just use sleeping bags like a duvet and never actually get into them 🙂

Are you planning on using it somewhere real cold (i.e. not in UK)?

If not, I wouldn’t bother with anything more than a 3 season. i’ve used my snugpak in scottish winter conditions – it’s comfy down to -10, plus you can then ‘add’ additional warmth by wearing extra layers, using a silk liner or sleeping in a tent 🙂

Is that Exped sleeveless? If so it doesn’t seem like it would make a good 4/5 season bag (cold arms!).

Another similar concept is the german army sleeping bag. Not sure if you can get this with different temp ratings…

Is it not the other way around? Aggressive tactics from some protesters (punching / shoving / smashing windows / throwing objects / breaking into rbs) causing an aggressive response from the police?

    Rendezvous

I have a rendezvous with Death
    At some disputed barricade,
When Spring comes back with rustling shade
    And apple-blossoms fill the air
I have a rendezvous with Death
When Spring brings back blue days and fair.

It may be he shall take my hand
And lead me into his dark land
And close my eyes and quench my breath
It may be I shall pass him still.
I have a rendezvous with Death
On some scarred slope of battered hill,
When Spring comes round again this year
    And the first meadow-flowers appear.

God knows ’twere better to be deep
Pillowed in silk and scented down,
Where love throbs out in blissful sleep,
Pulse nigh to pulse, and breath to breath,
Where hushed awakenings are dear . . .
But I’ve a rendezvous with Death
At midnight in some flaming town,
When Spring trips north again this year,
And I to my pledged word am true,
I shall not fail that rendezvous

I’ve got the 2.5cm Prolite in regular sizing (at 6’2) – I didn’t have any problems with hips / shoulders digging in. I was comparing it against my foam mat the other day, and on that I did notice hips digging in, so the thermarest is a big improvement in that area.

I was originally after the (orange) Prolite 3 as that’s the one I’ve read reviews on. The one I’ve got is this, which appears to be a newer model.

It’s the same size as the Prolite 3, but thinner material (so the guy in the shop said), so it’s lighter and packs smaller. It still feels very durable.

I also think it would be fine for 4 season. If you need extra warmth then getting a silk liner for your sleeping bag would do the trick, or just wear extra layers.
