Great thanks – hadn’t seen those two! Literally looked everywhere else. What’s the difference between these below – just the way they roll?:

assume they’ll be okay with a tube? (really need to go tubeless but changing wheels at some point..)

My son is 10 in a month and he’s 146cm.

Ed – No problem at all! Was offered some new wheels and was in a hurry to get him out. Hope you get yours sorted soon.

Bike was finished on Saturday, son has already been out on it a few times. Cost way over what I had planned to spend in the end (doesn’t it always? :) ) but he loves it and it’s a massive step up from his old 20” bike! Thinking is I can transfer components onto a newer frame this time next year so worth going for light/decent stuff now IMO.

Nearly ready to start building the bike up, just need new cranks and a couple of other minor bits. RE the Thorn, what’s the best sized chain ring to use? Running a 1×10 speed with a 11-36 cassette. Thinking a 30 or 32t? Will there be any issue with chain dropping?

Thanks for offer, really after some Rockshox though as I know them. Already sourced a 10 speed SLX/XT set up so have that sorted now.

Cheers, possibly would have been cheaper but I enjoyed building up my Cotic so thought I’d go the same route with this :)

As it stands looking for forks (if anyone has some Rebas for sale?!), shifter/rear mech – don’t mind 9 or 10 speed, & cassette. Think everything else is in hand now.

    More nice builds :)

edhornby – that’s very kind thank you! I would really appreciate that, I’d like to spend a healthy amount on the forks/gears so some cheap rims to start off with would be great.

I’ve had ‘fast’ cars for the last 12 years or so and currently have a 911. For me it isn’t the outright speed that appeals – it’s the whole experience. The noise, the looks, handling, sense of occasion (only used weekends/when nice c3k a year) and the acceleration out of a tight corner etc. It wouldn’t bother me if the car was limited to 100mph in this county as owning a quick car isn’t about top speeds.

I can understand why a lot of people think they’re pointless and a waste of money though.

If I’m understanding that correctly IMO you might be better off buying a complete bike. You can then do a bit of swapping about parts and still have complete bikes. Look at jump bikes as they tend to go for less than small mtbs , the trick is to find one that someone has lovingly built, and then realised dirt jumping was never for them. Until the bike above came up as too good to miss, I spent some time trying to find a suitable Ideniti Dr Jekyll (their adjustable dropout system is 24 and 26 wheel compatible). I’ve seen some really nice jump bikes go for under £200 on eBay actions.

I already have the 14” Kona frame (or will do this week), plus crank, chainrings, f&r mechs, post clamp. Probably would be cheaper to buy a full bike but they’re not that common in this size and I’ll only end up changing bits anyway :)

Kev – the Fire Mountain looks great, brings back memories as I had a 14” FM way back in 1994 when I was 12! Was my first proper bike.

Do these seem any good? I only have experience of Hope so haven’t a clue if they’re going to be suitable! Seems cheap enough considering full set.

Good point re brake lever adjustment. Just checked and they’re the Hayes sole hydraulics – they need a damn good service though. TBH it’s probably going to be easier to start again as the cassette/chain rings will need changing, seat post won’t fit, bars/stem no good. Seems a shame to pull the Cinder Cone apart for minimal parts.

Actually thinking of using the Hayes MX2 brakes, Deore/XT gearing, Sun/Shimano wheelset from my dad’s hardly ever used 2006 Cinder Cone. Works out a lot cheaper to do this and flog the frame/forks on. Wouldn’t mind upgrading the crank set though as both one I have for son’s bike and the Cinder Cones aren’t brilliant. Ideally change chainring/cassette sizes to run 1×9 speed.

Some nice builds. 1×9 or 1×10 speed sounds a decent idea to me, although he’s tall being only 10 in May he would probably benefit from rear shift only.

Great cheers for that – bars look a great deal. Any other ideas for rims/hubs etc? :) Brakes wise thinking along the lines of Shimano BR-M486.

Cheers – had thought of the Reba, I’ll keep my eyes peeled. Any suggestions on a decent light-ish wheelset? Literally have no idea with this as my BFe doesn’t exactly sport light wheels…

Got an ADT fire monitored system, no complaints here. They’re a bit expensive IMO but I think the peace of mind is worth it. I did find the salesman a bit pushy though, and some reviews online complain over high costs should you need to call them out for a non covered job. Overall I would recommend.

I have B&W CM9s, absolutely love Bowers and Wilkins stuff, these are my 4th set of speakers from them. Using an Arcam FMJ A28 integrated amp and an FMJ P38 power amp bi amped. Sounds great, really happy with it.

Suddenly the fact I am on crutches for 6 weeks after an ankle op doesn’t seem so bad! On the subject of fingers, I broke one of mine badly in a motocross accident and it’s still fat/bent nearly a year on, I don’t think they ever heal properly.

Been doing some mileage this week, as due for ankle surgery soon and won’t be able to drive for a few weeks :(

Decided to go for a Reverb. Does anyone know the cheapest place? I see Merlin have them for £166 with discount but it doesn’t include the bleed kit.

If you’re after something stylish, then a used set of Eames chairs would look good. An aluminium group EA 108 by Vitra or ICF in fabric will be in budget. Of if you want something ultra comfortable but not as sexy, and Aeron chairs are cheap used. Make sure they work properly though as parts are expensive. Plenty of office clearers on eBay selling the Aeron and I am sure you can haggle.

Chief – very true, but I’ll need a bolt clamp anyway for a dropper so worth a go for a temp measure?

Does look like I may as well go for the Reverb though, anywhere offering good deals!?

I have tried carbon paste (Thomson is black and not lost its colour), it has helped a little but the post is still dropping a few cms every 10 mins or so. I gather Thomson posts are on the small side a little, and Cotic frames maybe on the large? Not a match made in heaven anyway!

Cheers – I am actually running a Hope QR which does seem pretty useless, is it worth changing to a bolt through to see if that stops the Thomson slipping? I like the look of Thomson posts (got a Thomson stem) so this would be a cheap fix. Do like the idea of using a dropper though..

Thank for replies so far, still seriously thinking about a Reverb as it’ll be a god send (if it works well!). Are they generally reliable? a lot of the reviews I have read seem they aren’t, but I suppose you usually generally hear from disgruntled owners and not the happy ones.

I was having issues as soon as I took the machine home – this was a Vaio software issue, not a 3rd party program etc. PC World didn’t seem to care, and fobbed me off with having to send it off for 2 weeks which as it’s my work machine for an internet based business was a serious issue for me. I dug around online and managed to fix it myself, IMO they didn’t have a clue what they were doing, and weren’t particularly helpful either.

Also had a very poor experience recently with PC World regarding a software issue on a Vaio. Suffice to say the manager was an arse, I have cancelled the ‘care’ and managed to fix the problem myself. Apparently they couldn’t do it in store and needed to send it back to Sony. I won’t use them again.

Have had loads of cars over the years, and some ‘copters. Work/other hobbies get in the way so I have always ended up selling them. I still have a little Thunder Tiger ST 2 truck though but that hasn’t been used in a year either! Must get some new batteries for it when the weather drys up.
