Thank you for the PSA. After many many years of simply recycling my old trainers for MTB (Nike Air Force One are actually really good trainers for flats!) I’ve treated myself to some of these.

On sizing.. I’m a 10 in pretty much every pair of shoes I own but when I measured my feet based on the sizing guidance on the adidas website I came out as a UK 9.5.. Ended up ordering 10.5 based on tips in this thread.. Who knows if they’ll fit!

I was shouting some awful awful things at the telly about Alonso there mind!

Few more laps and he could have won that. All that sparring with Alonso cost him the win. Crazy crazy race. Still can’t get over that restart. Hamilton must have been looking in his mirrors thinking WTF?!

Interesting. I hadn’t realised that. Thanks for the clarification. Yeah it would have been bold for P1 Lewis to make that decision but as soon as P2 did it the whole field came in! Never seen anything like that restart before. Bizarre.

FFS. Absolutely ludicrous scenes. Merc messed up BIG time there. How did those pitting get out so quickly?! Seemed really fast. Was looking forward to another proper standing start. Didn’t get our 2 for 1

This is going to be great to watch unfold during lap 1 tomorrow, I can’t wait! Just watched a video of Max losing his cool in a press conference when asked about 1st lap engagement between him and Lewis, swearing and shouting on. Lewis is in his head now and he seems to be getting more and more wound up. If he loses his cool in the race (which I predict is very likely) he’s not going to get far.

I really hope the wheels fall off Verstappen’s title race after this weekend. He’s a reet spoilt little tit. I can’t believe the way he and Horner have conducted themselves over the whole incident. **** embarrassing.

Hamilton was coming at him like a cruise missile the whole first half of the lap and after being met with a high level of aggression on two occasions, the third time that aggression was matched and Verstappen came off worse. Hamilton had been pushed to the absolute limit by him into the right hand side of the straight close to the barrier, the complete opposite side of the track you want to be on for a right hand corner. He was always going to understeer wide but the child just couldn’t yield and he paid the price. Problem is I just don’t think he’ll learn and will continue being an aggressive little prick. Can’t wait for the next race. If only to see Horner make an absolute mug of himself again if he doesn’t get his way. Also, bravo to the Red Bull gives you whinge comments up thread 😂

Wow. Incredible race and Silverstone has looked fantastic all weekend. That interview just now with Horner by Kravitz was unbearable. I’ve never been able to tolerate the little windbag and I know he is just towing the team line but FFS get a grip you twisty little ****. Verstappen (as always) was super aggressive and got a taste of his own.. Racing incident for me with both parties able to have done a bit more to avoid. But Helmut Marko calling for a race ban.. arrr well aye mate – give your head a wobble you silly owld bastard.

Deary me that was MASSIVE! The initial fall and impact into those sharp rocks was horrific. Heal well Gee. That was a big one.

Interesting stuff. I’m on Octopus Go at the moment and enjoying 4 hours of 5ppkwh overnight to juice the car up. I was weary of Agile and WFH meant I didn’t want to be worrying about making a brew etc. during peak times. I need to see when my current deal last until as it sounds like a price hike isn’t far off..

Earplugs. Race cars are LOUD. Even the current crop of V6 hybrid turbos are louder than I expected. I saw the 2019 Merc at Goodwood yesterday and whilst not as loud as a V8 screamer a whole grid of them will still be plenty noisy.

It’s like a riddle that ad. Really badly worded, no doubt on purpose. Sounds like the person who provided the response didn’t really understand the deliberately worded ad. As above, I think they have been sneaky with the word “connector” – with them taking it to mean the socket in reality. Which is bullshit of course because if that wasn’t “provided for free” it wouldn’t **** work! You’ll get a cable in the boot with your new car so whilst it’s annoying and poor form by them it’s not worth losing sleep over.

@boombang That’s certainly an interesting response from the installer. I can understand it though as there seems to some differences between DNOs.

For example, Northern Powergrid told me they would never fit anything above 80a on a domestic property and even most small business properties are the same. We have three phase coming into our house (services 4 houses in total but comes in under our drive) and the fuse carriers (x3) all have 100a stamped on them but I know they definitely have 80a fuses in them. Not sure why it’s like this because it’s confusing, e.g. if you send a photo and it says ‘100a’ I would assume it contains a 100a fuse! But you can’t check without breaking the seals (not that I would be poking around in there anyway!).

I was told our 7kw podpoint would simply throttle the current if I decided to have a tumble dryer party, not sure what the name is for this. We used a local company rather than podpoint direct so probably paid a bit more because they sorted all the paperwork etc. I would get a second opinion form another installer.

Aye, think I’d be more worried about the safety element of it more than the cost.

@boombang What is your current main cutout rated at? I had my 32amp podpoint on our 63amp main cutout for a year with no issues whatsoever.

Our DNO is Northern Powergrid and we eventually got it upgraded it to 80amp. 100amp wouldn’t be done unless there was an exceptional reason. I think from logging the call with the DNO to getting the works done it was maybe 2 months and involved digging up a bit of the driveway.

Interesting question. I would ask before just running a cable. I don’t think it’ll be quite as much as £30-40 but I think common courtesy would be to talk to you about it.

I’ve wondered about this at campsites.. heading to Goodwood (hopefully!) in a couple weeks but the extra for an electric hookup pitch is waaaay more than just hitting a rapid charger for 20 minutes.

Thank you all. Some brill responses and I for one have had a good giggle! Definitely wasps and I suspect they’ve been in there for a little while as I kept finding them in the utility/garage but only recently twigged when I was working in the garden and seen a load in/out the birdbox.

I’m going to try and gently remove the box from the wall and put it at the bottom of the garden away from the house.

    Cheers

Interesting. There’s an article on the Times website from Saturday that says “Whatever happens on the spectator front, the show is expected to go on” which is a bit cryptic.. because a lot of the event (e.g. manufacturer stalls) require people to be there.

It really would be a much nicer place. The level of pure **** wittery on display in cars every single day is staggering.

We live on a main road in a small town that is a blanket 20mph zone and I seen two young local lads drive past my house late the other night racing each other between 60-70mph making a ridiculous racket. I know where both of them live (very recognisable boy racer cars on mammy and daddy’s drives) from my lunchtime WFH walks. I mean on what planet is that socially acceptable. Am i a bad person for hoping the little ****s really hurt themselves and learn a lesson without hurting anyone else?

Not a Covid thing round here, been going on for donkeys. Worst instance I experienced was years ago at the local Sainsbury’s at maybe 9pm. A big supermarket 1 hour before closing so easily 90% of the hundreds of car parking spaces are free.

My wife and I come out with all of our shopping and I spot a guy in his 4×4 **** mobil, engine running (naturally) parked sideways across TWO disabled bays (no blue badge). We load our car and just before I pull away, matey in his motorised penis extension pulls out before me (as he’s only about 10 metres from the door and I’m in a normal space further out) and then stops right outside the **** shop door. This is in the one way system to exit the whole car park which is 1 car wide.. so I have to sit and watch this **** cockheads wife load their weekly shop into the boot!

I’m **** bouncing by this point leaning on the horn covering the inside of my windscreen in spit. He leans out and looks back giving the owld “WTFs you problem pal?” look while his wife gives the same.

I could have easily went full Douglas in Falling down that evening if it wasn’t for my wife in the car being the voice of reason.

Drives me **** potty stuff like this and all of the stuff up-thread.

Tell you what mind, regen effectiveness aside driving an ICE hire car recently was effin horrible! Near enough brand new Ford Ecosport plastic SUV thing.. something buzzy and turbocharged resembling a petrol engine under the bonnet, 6 speed manual, brakes that do nothing for a good amount of the initial travel before attempting to throw you through the windscreen, steering so vague it’s a safety issue, the list goes on.

Mind you, the AC in an ICE car is shit hot (well cold) compared to an EV (well my M3 anyway).

    nickewen

@luket my wife drives it more than me since I’ve been WFH exclusively for over a year, so it could be as simple as her driving style.. 😬

Plus the fact she has the regen set to the lower level and mine the higher on our driver profiles.

I’m going to be doing the Newcastle/Glasgow trip again (without bars/racks) in a few days and see what the craic is. I’ll report back on conditions, driving style, Wh/mile, etc. on here.

The M3 Performance is a great car but if I get another M3 when this goes back it’ll be the LR for sure. Can’t get a towbar on mine and I’d like the extra miles from that model. And it’s a bit cheaper.

@uponthedowns The consumption to efficiency calc for Tesla to most other EVs is 1000 over the Wh/mile figure. I don’t like the Tesla’s consumption figure as I’m hardwired through a couple of decades of ICE driving to think “bigger number better” for efficiency. But I agree, 3.57 is pretty crappy for the best efficiency I achieve with no roof bars.

    @luket
yes a lot of the time that is with the bars and a couple of Thule 598s up top and sometimes actual bikes when I manage to get my fat arse out on the trails. I was expecting more from the model 3 TBH.. like you say it’s a smaller/lighter package than the S with newer tech.

    @Flaperon
our Model 3 Performance has definitely seen charging in excess of 100kW at the superchargers. It was about 125kW and 500 miles per hours in a low SoC.

My previously reported battery deg seems to have corrected itself with a few deep discharges and long runs.. it’s regularly showing 270miles at 90% and 300miles at 100% which is within a couple of miles of what it was at new 🙂

Not that I ever get those figures.. would have to drive at 20mph constantly with ALL aux systems off!

Some really impressive real world ranges from the Korean marques.

I recently drove our Model 3P from Newcastle to Glasgow sans roof bars/bike rack and spanked 220miles of ‘range’ in a 160mile journey. At 100% charge ours shows roughly 300miles (WLTP is 329miles) and as mentioned in another thread in calculating that 300miles @ 100%, Tesla don’t take into account any environmental factors/recent driving style etc. (which is different to pretty much all other EVs I think). You can see this real number in the ‘Energy’ screen but the main display is always just the raw number.

So real world if I took that 300miles down to 0 miles I would only actually go 218 miles.. but I would never realistically take it to 0miles so call it 210 max which is pretty shit really when the website says your shiny new Tesla has a range of 329miles.

The newer model has an energy efficient heat pump which mine does not so I’d be really interested in what difference that makes.

The journey to Glasgow was pretty ordinary driving, nothing wild and capped at 70mph on the motorway. My economy ranges between 280-320Wh/mile which is 3.57-3.13mi/kWh. Not great given some of the real world figures in this thread. Some of that is with the rack on though and carrying a big mountain bike.

My wife’s ID3 is due any day and we specced that with the energy efficient heat pump so really interested to see how that goes. It’s a 58kWh battery and WLTP of 260miles and I’ve a feeling it won’t be that much less than the Tesla real world. But obviously without the convenience of supercharging.

On my recent trip to the lakes with the bike up top I managed to eek out quite a bit more range by having the AC off and keeping speeds right down. Was sweating my bits off mind and it was NOT comfortable!

@flaperon you should be reet. I had a 32a pod point for our Model 3 for 12 months on a 60a main cutout. Local independent company fitted the charger rather than pod point themselves so think they sorted all of the DNO paperwork. After 12 months I was sorting a load of other house shit and contacted the DNO who got it upgraded to 80a. They weren’t bothered in the slightest about the 32a charger on the old 60a cutout. I think the podpoint has something in it that will restrict the car charging if I went mad and had a tumble dryer party or something. It gets 28 miles/hr into the battery.

Thanks Drac that’s good to know. More of a general question (but prompted by looking at that charger on zap map) I assume if someone is using the 50kW Chad connector another user couldn’t concurrently use the 50kW CCS? Just it shows at having 2 50kWs at that location which seems a bit misleading.

The charging network definitely has some catching up to do, and I say that driving a Tesla and being able to take advantage of the supercharger network. I was really marginal last weekend on a trip to the lakes and I was nearly completely snookered by a big diversion off the A66 on the way home. The direct route from Newcastle to near Whinlatter appeared to have 1 50kW BP charger in Carlisle (which I downloaded the app for an pre-paid some credit onto) before I would need to start looking at longer routes. To the North is the Gretna superchargers and to the South is the Tebay superchargers, with a handful of fast 3rd party ones in between. In the end I switched off AC and trundled along with the trucks making it home with 16 miles in the “tank”.. Motorway speeds and a geet muckle gnarpoon on the roof narf kills your range!

It’s going to be tricky getting people out of ICE’s because they’re far too convenient to the point you don’t even have to think about it or plan anything. They’re also far too cheap – even though my full weekend of fuel probably cost less than £3 it would maybe only be £30-40 in an equivalent size diesel car. And to be able to blat up the motorway at whatever speed you want with some nice cool air wafting about the place it’s probably a price most are willing to pay.

Once you get into the EV mindset of planning journeys, balancing up travelling a bit slower and completely avoiding charger surfing along the way the whole tooling up lane 3 in a huuge gas guzzling motor at 85mph seems absurd! I spent most of my time on the M6 thinking where the **** are all these people in such a hurry to get to.

Thank you for the continued responses all. I hadn’t even thought about kids using yet.. Daughter is only 2 and I reckon by the time she’s old enough to have a key this door will be long gone.. good news on my old door though, the younger of the two fitters is going to spray it and put it on his house – love a bit of proper recycling! No rivers in Turkey just yet..

The fitter has been back round to install remaining trim. I told him I wasn’t happy with the locking mechanism, he applied silicone lube and fettled with the keeps I think but noticed the lock barrel itself looks like it had taken a hit at some point and has suggested replacing that first. He said it’ll be this afternoon if they have one at the factory otherwise will be a fortnight. I’m not impressed. Still haven’t paid yet..

I’m sorry to hear that BB, we’re starting to regret the decision already.. I was just thinking that if the door was fitted next door at my 90 year old neighbours house she’d have absolutely no chance of operating it. Not fit for purpose IMO and I can’t see it being here in the long term. My wife is gutted as she’s wanted a new door since we moved in 7 years ago.. Wish we’d went for a normal twist handle now. Expensive mistake this one 😐

Thanks for the responses all. I’m going to set about it with some silicone lube before the fitter gets here tomorrow, see if that makes a difference and then have good old whinge regardless I think.

**** brand new front door and I’m pissing about with silicone lube inside 24hrs.. Form over function.. Was nowt wrong with the old door IMO.. it’s probably on its way to Turkey to get ‘recycled’ into a bastarding river.

Surely they should make the head of the key larger given the type of locking mechanism.. but nope just a standard sized circle you’d find at the head of any common or garden key. I’m going to have to buy some sort of elderly person key turner thing at the age of 35

It’s got a knob on the inside sharkbait which increases the leverage by maybe 5mm.. but aye it’s hard work!

Good point Jon. I guess it’s never going to be easy doing it via key alone and achieving a seal..

FFS Why do these things even exist! I was quite happy with this old door.. you could almost buy a set of carbon wheels for what this thing cost.

I had a policy with Adrian Flux a couple of years ago and remember paying a few extra quid a year to be able to drive other vehicles fully comp as long as the car was worth no more than £20K. Might be worth looking into something like that.

I’ve got a bike rack (roof mounted) on my Model 3 and haven’t got enough data yet to see the full picture but I don’t think it’s a million miles away from the impact it had on my old ICE car (M135i used to hammer the thimble sized petrol tank with two big bikes on the roof!) but the main difference is I could belt down the motorway then stop for 3 mins and fill up with more dino juice and be on my way again.. from a convenience perspective that would be 20+ mins stop at a rapid and maybe a more convoluted route so maybe 30 mins difference (that’s on the assumption it’s a long trip requiring charging). It just needs a bit more planning. The Tesla is our main car and other half is getting an ID3 in a couple of weeks so no more ICE for the time being.

Driving an EV then getting back in an ICE is weird, in fact even just being around an ICE makes you realise how utterly bonkers the whole thing is.. Next door’s diesel Q3 sounds like a bloody tractor and it’s probably quite refined (it’s nearly new) compared to a lot of motors out there. They just feel and sound so broken.. like the wrong answer to the question from 100 odd years ago when the oil companies wanted to make more and more money. Don’t get me started on the arsehole round the back who has an old jeep that spews acrid black smoke all over the street every morning.. I am conflicted though as a petrol head and motorsport fan (not sure what the EV version of a petrol head is) but I think we should save the hydrocarbons for the real spectacle stuff – e.g. race cars and not nipping to shops for milk.. anyway I’m way OT now and rambling. I read somewhere that ICE cars generally achieve about 75% of their quoted economy figures and EVs are about the same for range.

This is an interesting one and there are literally 1000s of threads on the EV forums about it. I’m currently on page 10/107 of the Model 3 ‘charging and battery deg’ thread!

You’re correct about the last 10-20% up to a full charge taking a lot longer, whether you’re on a slow charger at home or a rapid on the road, it will be relatively slower.

Re. battery deg – my understanding is that it’s not just about charging the pack to 100% but leaving it at a high State of Charge (SoC) for any extended period of time. If you’re going on a trip and need to charge to 100% then you should ensure you are hitting the road sharpish.

Good practice is to only charge above 80% if you actually need it and plug it in regularly, Tesla advice is to plug in every night even if you’ve only used a few %.

Re. the bottom end of the range – not too sure about the mechanics of it but I get warnings from the car when it hits about 10-15% SoC (only done that twice) and advice from Tesla is to manage between 20-80%.

For reference my M3P has a quoted WLTP range of 329miles. In reality I think it would struggle to do 250 miles and that’s 100-0% so for my (hopefully!) trip from Newcastle to Goodwood in July I’ll be hitting two superchargers on the way down and same back up for ~640 mile round trip.. and even then I may have to factor in another if my range anxiety kicks in!
