Our Model 3 will break traction with regen on snow and ice. I’ve only had to drive it a couple of times in such conditions but with the regen set to high and a moderate (not complete) lift off it will break traction. The battery was probably quite warm from de-icing/cabin heating while sat on the drive. If I have to drive in such conditions again I will definitely be switching the regen to the lower setting.

Aside from that it handled OKish in the snow, especially given the sports orientated 20 inch tyres on the Performance model (Michelin Pilot Sport 4S). We got up a moderate incline with a lot of fresh snow on it and there were a couple of hatchbacks/saloons behind me that didn’t make it. Having 4WD and a motor at each end with the ‘skateboard’ battery pack no doubt helped things and if you were just breaking traction at each corner the car would move around a bit but scrabble up the hill quite nicely.

Don’t get me wrong, its a 2 tonne car and I wouldn’t want to lose it going downhill (like that bloke in Glasgow the other week!) but it handled pretty well. With a set of winter boots I expect it would be very good indeed.

Thank you for the responses all, some really helpful stuff up there ^^^. I hadn’t considered the point about his car taking up valuable space (and therefore money) on one of their ramps. Good strategy on asking for more information, I mean they’re asking for 2 grand so a bit of info in the other direction isn’t too much to ask! I’ve just spoken with my Dad and apparently they took a video that they were meant to send but didn’t.. FFS.

He hasn’t got a breakdown, just a phone call at this point.. they investigated it today so it may already be in bits 😐

Aye it’s big money isn’t it, even for main stealers! Thanks for sharing cost on your mondeo, that’s useful

Could you keep it and enjoy the car for a bit longer? How many more miles are you likely to be doing? If you’re replacing it with another petrol ICE car then is there going to be a material difference in economy and therefore fuel costs? I only ask because the 320i (6 speed manual) we just got rid of wasn’t great on the juice.. High 30s on a run, I seen 40mpg once in nearly 3 years but was driving like an angel, around town high 20s best.. That was a 2015 model so relatively modern.

It’s a really difficult one especially at the moment with the pandemic and restrictions. I’ve always sold our cars privately on AT but yesterday I sold my wife’s 320i to Arnold Clark in a WBAC style transaction (worth checking their valuation as it was the best I found from the various websites). Obviously not a 6cyl but it was the right colour, spec, FBMWSH, etc. etc. but I just couldn’t be doing with people coming round the house wanting test drives etc. etc. so had to swallow my pride and probably about £1500-2000 difference on a private sale but for us right now, it was the right thing to do.

What I would say about these WBAC type transactions is that there is near zero discretion available to whoever inspects/values the car.. Tiny chip on alloy? £200 off the valuation straight away and so on.

Thus, if you have a minter LCI 335i wagon in the right spec and can be arsed with the hassle I’d go private. The more special/rare the car is the more it pushes towards a private sale. At the end of the day you only need 1 person to buy it.

I’ve had a few beemers in the past and if I didn’t have my EV co car I’d probably be making you an offer!

    Good luck with the sale.

It’s starting to look like I need to buy some cable and get the SDS out 😂
    Thanks all.

Thanks for the responses. I haven’t any experience of powerline, is that more appropriate/effective in this application? I could potentially run a cable outside, up the wall and then behind gutters over the garage roof and into the office at the back.

Thanks, aye it is quite a long run.. it’s basically front corner of the house to opposing rear corner of garage diagonally. Running a cable not impossible but a bit of a pain with a mix of suspended wooden floor in house then concrete in garage. I bought the mesh to try and avoid this but starting to think I should have bought a higher end system that I could scale with additional satellites.

Thank you for the responses all. The insulation and parenting points are all really useful and appreciated.

The lady next door (not adjoining) had her roof over-sulated and the guy next door (who works for building control at the council!) was not happy about it.. there is a good 6 inch step (perhaps more) from her flat roof dormer down to his. It would look better if both sides were done at once but it’s not a big deal IMO.

I’m really conscious of our energy usage and trying to insulate as best possible. I hadn’t heard about the foam before so I’ll do a bit of research there, sounds interesting.

    Cheers

    Thank you for sharing @kimbers

That article just goes on and on with tales of woe! Shocking really but not sure why I expected any different.

I’ve had real problems in the past getting local roofers to come out to even quote.. if I reduce the pool of tradesman due to them needing to be registered I’ve got nee chance!

@marksnook Interesting that you’re experiencing the same, I guess technology and building regs have moved on a lot in 60 years! I’ve been WFH for nearly a year now as well so I’m interested in smart heating controls too, specifically WiFi TRVs so I can just heat my office and nothing else (although this is only “secondary” on the checker tool.. whatever that means).

    @jag61
I’d never thought about it in those terms before but yes the external wall:internal volume ratio is not great is it?! Our daughter is only 1 and I’m hyper sensitive about her room temp and constantly checking the monitor thru the night.. No wonder I’m tired all the time..

Whatever you do, don’t buy the entry level Netgear Orbi RBK13 mesh system.. after a good solid stint of service mine has become flaky as **** and I’m currently 5 hours in to trying to fix the little ****. Sat down at 2pm to work and I’m still here now trying to sort it. I’m giving it until 9pm then I’m going to set about it with a hammer. FFS

I don’t really touch the Pod-Point app. Just tell the car via the in-car functionality to only start charging at 0030. I can override it on the car app if I want it to start charging immediately.

    nickewen

Podpoint do a 22kW solo charger that requires 3 phase (as you note) which apparently is good for 90 miles of juice in the battery per hour. It is however twice the price of the nearest model which is the 7kW solo. I imagine the install and planning would be more involved too with more engagement with your DNO, but I have no direct experience with the faster home chargers. We do however have 3 phase coming into the house (our house services 4 semis in a block).

We have the 7kW solo and it gets 28 miles per hour into the battery which means I can get wake up to a full charge in my Model 3 regardless of state of charge when I plug it in. The slight complexity is that I only get cheap electricity (5ppkWh as opposed to 15ppkWh) between 0030-0430 so I need to plug the car in when it gets down to about 160 miles range to get it back up to 280 miles range (~85% in ‘daily’ rather than 100% ‘trip’ mode) to charge most cost effectively.

It looks like we will be getting an ID3 in the near future so this further complicates things.. and depending on mileage could quite easily end up having one or the other plugged in every night to ensure we’re making the most of the cheap overnight rate.

It’s crazy cheap in terms of fuel mind, a few quid and that’s the Tesla charged!

Cheeky ad alert.. We’re currently selling our 2015 320i M-Sport+ saloon if you’re interested ;o)

It hits a lot of your criteria but certainly not all. Very refined on long journeys, cruise control, bluetooth, nav, petrol engine, manual, reliable, etc. It also has a removable swan neck towbar and Thule wingbar edge roof bars plus a set of barely worn Pirelli RFT winters (in addition to the Bridgestone RFTs) so it’s all setup for bike lugging duties and getting about in the snow/ice. RWD not Xdrive but VERY capable on the Pirelli Sottozeros. Smidge under 37K on the clock. It’s just not getting used since I got an EV.

Bit more than £10k but not much. DM me if interested.

    Cheers

Thank you for the replies all, the sensible and the funny ones! I’ve had a good chuckle reading through the responses.

All sorted now. I’ve been out and kicked its head in for a good 20 mins and it’s now silent again. the offending disc still has some visible marks on it but it looks better. Even did some of the suggested emergency brakes in reverse. I actually rather enjoyed myself!

re. the tools.. when you put it like that @fossy it does sound a bit silly of me! But the last car I serviced myself was a 2004 Passat NA petrol number in 2008.. and even that wasn’t particularly straightforward.. I’ve got absolutely no business whatsoever poking around underneath my Tesla and the driveway is on a slope.. so tools have gone to someone who will hopefully use em.

Good advice re. giving the brakes a good hammering now and then. I need to make sure to take the time to turn regen to low now and then and give them some stick. Seems crazy putting huge discs and calipers on an EV but they do look nice and are no doubt helpful when trying to pull up the thick end of 2 ton of saloon car..

    Cheers all

Well there’s something noisy trapped in there! 😂

Cheers Retro. It’s been used regular by my wife to get to work at the hospital so most probs down to the regen doing 90% of the braking. Gonna get up in the morning and do some heavy braking see if that helps 👍

The discs look ok, I think the photo above just makes them look thin due to phone camera flash. Here’s a better photo of disc and also pad

I got rid of my trolley jack and other tools a while back so not an option unfortunately, plus it’s peeing down with rain. Also not sure with it being twin motor EV if the wheel would even spin if I jacked it up? There’s not even a handbrake to operate.

    nickewen

It’s making a horrific noise at anything above 5mph. Tempted to absolutely nail it and then jab the brakes on.. bad idea?

Aye potentially, I did take the back roads to the shop.. it only started as I put it in reverse so maybe something sat there and when I moved backwards it’s jammed in. There’s something in there alreet!

Aye very weird weather in Newcastle too. Was peeing doon with rain a few hours ago when I walked home from picking the bairn up and now it’s like a winter wonderland oot there! Meant to get heavier in the wee hours too. I LOVE snow me. Can’t get anything done when it’s snowing!

The Romic coil shock on my old Ellsworth Joker made a lovely “swoosh-puchurrr” type noise compressing and rebounding. I thought it sounded class but perhaps there was just a bit of air in there..

Edit: Can you remember how much it cost at the jewellers clubby?

Another thread hijack while the watch people are on (apologies OP).

I have a Tag Heuer quartz chronograph that my wife bought me for my 30th birthday and after 5 years the battery has gone. It looks like it’s £345 for a full service on the official price list.

Is it sensible to pay up for this given the time frame and dead battery? (I think I know the answer but struggling to reconcile the cost with getting a new watch battery!)

Canny bit of snow in Newcastle. Winter tyres stacked up in shed, car on drive and wife on bus! Oops 😬.

Apologies for the delayed response, I’ve been on Teams calls all day 😐.

Thank you very much indeed to everyone for taking the time to post, share your personal experiences, make suggestions and even offers to meet up in the NE. You really are a great bunch of people on STW.

I’m glad to hear that the tantrums and sharing thing is completely normal and had a giggle at some of the comments about kids being little psychopaths 😂.

I’m going to order some of the arts and crafts stuff suggested and also tune into Hey Duggee to get some rest from Peppa.. although I do find all the cheap shots at daddy pig quite amusing!

    Thanks again

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been assaulted. It boils my piss when I hear about stuff like this.

Riding a bicycle on the road is dangerous and stressful and I’ve now completely given up on it. I was either going to end up having the shit kicked out of me or doing time for skudding some pricks face off their bonnet for close passing me.

Worst one was the agressive little bell end revving his engine, shouting at me (literally in front of a city centre police station!) before a ludicrous close pass and then him arriving at the back of a traffic jam some 5 seconds later.. for having the cheek to be on the rod on a bicycle.

Me offering some complete stranger his gans 100 yards from the office by braying on his window explaining what I thought of him and his driving was not one of my finest moments.. Although it was quite funny to watch him sink into his seat and not move his gaze from dead ahead as some 16 stone skinhead geordie bloke screamed incoherent nonsense at him 😃

Commuter bike now permanently attached to turbo trainer.

I can’t offer any specific advice regarding your car but I did have a Bones 2 for a while and whilst a solid enough rack it was a reet pain in the arse for anything other than a large framed hardtail.. Full sussers were really difficult to mount.

Also, with this type of rack you should have a light board as it will likely obscure at least some of the rear lights and plate unless you’re lucky and can mount it very high up. At which point I’d be looking at a roof mount option – are you able to get a roof rack and put them up top? Getting them on the roof is a good balance of being secure and not costing the earth.

Thanks @simon_g that Longleat 800 looks quality and it’s bigger than the Berghaus up and smaller down. Win win.

Thanks @djflexure. Totally agree with the inflatable tents not being convenient. I’d have to get a van or a trailer to make it work.. and I’m willing to do neither!

I think the ID3 is a great car. My SiL has just got one in white and it looks fantastic in the flesh. Her husband picked it up from St Albans and drove it home to Northumberland with 1 splash and dash at a rapid charger halfway up. I’m trying to convince my wife to get one.
