Unless you like getting thorn punctures that is

No more patches and tubes too.

I used Wheel Milk from Just Riding Along seems to have worked just fine. 3 weeks and counting….

I used new Maxxis Minion/Crossmark on DT E540 rims and had no probs at all.

If you’re a habitual tyre swapper then tubeless isn’t great. I will change the rear in the Autunm i imagine.

They sealed/seated with just a track pump and have great so far. I really only did for stop thorn punctures as i was getting them almost every ride!!

No weight gain in my case as i the Maxxis were heavier than the Kenda they replaced. If i had kept to Kenda then there would have a very small weight decrease.

I now the tyres at around 30-35 psi, loads of grip and no chance of pinch flats either.

Continental are supposed to be fine for ghetto.

Ashton Court and Leigh Woods are both pretty much bone dry and rock hard in all but the usual places as well.

    Badgers,deer,fox,rabbits,squirrels and birds around here.

The odd toad if i’m lucky. Found a dead badger in my local woods yesterday. The trail passes over the top of a set and it was right next to the trail so i hope it wasn’t killed by a someone out on a night ride :(

I’ve come pretty close to running a few badgers over myself whilst out on night rides.

No idea as i was using a new trye anyway. Apprantly there’s no need to re-new when swapping tyres.

I will find out one day.

Thanks for that David! That’s quite literally road kill.

Followed Allen Kellys instructions to the letter and had no probs at all.

Could not have been simpler. Makes £50 ‘proper’ tubeless kits completely redundant and an absolute rip-off. I can’t see any advantage to using them over two BMX tubes and some sealant.

…..and can be done with just insulation tape, packing tape and old valves too!

Loving my Orange 5. Swapped all parts from a 2007 Marin Wolf Ridge to a second hand 2007 frame. It’s sooooo much better.

Having said that, did 30 miles on my fiancee’s Yeti 575 yesterday. Oh my god!….Now that is an amazing bike! Accelerates so much quicker, Wants to fly off every lump, root etc and has such supple suspension.

I’m not too keen on how the 5’s shock ramps up at the end of the travel. The Yeti almost feels bottomless in comparison. That little swing link makes all the difference.

Going to stick with the Orange for now but a Yeti is going to be the replacment. Although by then, my fiancee will be my wife and we will have matching bikes! Doh!

Let people protest, it won’t make a blind bit of difference.

Thousands protested against the war in Iraq and look what happened there!

There is alot of anger around at the moment but mostly down to peoples ignorance. This recession has cost me my job and made things pretty hard for my fiancee and i but no point getting too angry about it.

I’m pissed off but i’m not going to be so arrogant as to assume i know all there is about running banks etc. They may have been irresponsible but so what, they tighten their belts and then in a few years it’s sll back to normal.

There will always be the minority of people who will kick off given any excuse.

Dry as a bone right now. I can’t recall any significant rainfall in about 3 weeks :D

The trails in Roeberrow warren are pretty bad although i understand rebuilding is taking place already. Logging has made a real mess as you would expect really. The trails havn’t been this dry in ???? months.

Nearly all the trails in the south Bristol area are dry.

    When are you heading there?

If you can afford it, why not?

I can’t so i buy a year old frame, usually. I just get bored and fancy a change. Nothing more, nothing less.

Trains aren’t exactly cheap or reliable IME.

Looking to do some of the alternative routes around Cwmcarn. Bored of the Twrch trail, Partner doesn’t like it much and need to find more riding in that area as it’s nice and close for weekend rides.

Molgrips – can i assume you know South Wales area well?

    Liking the limited savings.

I have none! Used all my redundancy to pay rent, bills etc. Only just getting by on partners income, JSA and housing benefits.

Wedding in 5 weeks time is being paid for by future in-laws or else it was cancel it!!!!!

    What a mess!

In Bristol it’s Woohoo for me too.

Been out of work for 3 months now and riding almost everyday. Thank god the weather has been so good. All the usual Bristol trails are great (compared to the usual sloppy state they’re in)

Just wish i had a car so i could actually ride other places apart from the trails within a 15 mile radius!!

Looks like it’ll be Square Taper then.

Can’t afford a Royce one just yet though. If a Shimano UN54 lasts a year then that’ll be better than the BB on my current Hone crankset. First one lasted 6 months, second one has needed the non-driveside bearing re-packing with grease after 3 months!!!!!

Heavy and sh1t is my opinion of Hone cranks. I want to continue the British theme of Orange, Hope etc.

I’m not convinced 113mm will be long enough. My 36 tooth middle ring(bash/36/24) was catching the swingarm pivot cap before i spaced it out so i’m thinking 118mm should be okay.

    Thanks for the help

Surely Freeride doesn’t really make sense when applied to bikes?

I mean, i have been snowboarding since the early 90’s. I remember first seeing the term “Freeride” applied to the quys who were taking freestyle tricks out onto the off-piste areas. With snow you can just about ride where you like, the same can’t really be applied to a bike. Trees, bushes, fallen trees etc would get in the way of just riding along.

Everything we ride on is on a predefined trail of some sort, no?

Looks like he’s done a runner!

Even if i lived so close to great trails i wouldn’t be so arrogant as to compare them to Whistler!!!

There are dozens of smaller ski hills in the states that have better bike trials than Glentress or Inners would ever have.

    Always 2x fresh pairs.

Can only recall one occasion in recent years of needing to change them during a ride (SSC not genuine Hope sintered!)

Current ones keep going and going and going…….

I can’t see how a chairlift in the tweed valley will ever happen.

    A) The cost would be massive and would take forever to recoup.
    B) Maintenance costs are also high. Do you really expect it to turn a profit?
    C) Trail Maintenance: Trails would need a big dedicated maintenance crew working all year to stay on top of it!
    D) Ski resorts like Whistler can see tens of thousands of skiers/boarders on any one lift. Thats how they can justify the investment.

Righty – You have to accept that not everyone can be arsed with tape etc when a tube does the job just fine. Most people are happy with not having had to buy a Stans type kit.

Also, I for one don’t have packing tape, electrical tape or old tubes/valves lying around the house.

Good for you for saving money – you must be easily pleased :D

I like the fact that schwalbes BMX tubes have removeable valve cores too. Makes adding extra sealant that little bit easier.

I’m just glad i didn’t go out and buy a Stans or Joes kit. Seeing how easy ghetto is why on earth bother with any proper kit?

    £50 or £12(or less!), a no-brainer really.

    nickegg

Not so cheap if you dont have any of the neccesary parts lying around!

£12 for a couple of tubes and a bottle of latex is hardly expensive. I used a new tyre because the current one was very worn out so replacement was needed anyway.

I was trying to put a link up for Allen Kellys website as it was his instructions a followed to the letter.

Had it listed in my favorites but site appears to have vanished!

I used a Schwalbe 20″ BMX tube, Wheel milk from Just Riding Along and a NEW maxxis Minion tyre.

My top tip would be to use barely watered down car shampoo to clean out the cut tube and to help get tyre onto the rim (i didn’t need any levers to get tyre on).

Got the bead seated with just a track pump, had to push tyre down over the valve hole to hlp get more air in though.

It has worked a treat and still holding pressure fine after 3 weeks or so.

Did you try using really soapy water to get the tyres on?

I’ve just ghetto’d a DT E540 rim and Maxxis Minion kevlar beaded tyre. Used barely watered down car shampoo and got the tyre on with just my hands.

    UST beads must be tighter?!

    Which year do you have?

I had the 2006 and 2007 models, both of which required the extra large Lizard Skin neoprene one.

Must be available online at CRC, Wiggle etc.

Zermatt, Switzerland for 2 week honeymoon in early May :D

and at least 1 week on the bikes in the late summer/early autumn. Not sure where though?? Les Arc perhaps.

Ghetto’d Maxxis Minion 2.35 Maxxpro Kevlar bead on the front.

and a “starting to look very worn” Kenda Nevegal 2.1 DTC folding on the rear.

Minion is great on the mostly earth/leaves/roots of south bristol, rolls really well too.

Going to go for Maxxis Crossmark (Ghetto) for the rear soon, weather permitting.

Enduro is still who’s quickest, just over longer and more sections :D

I was a wreck by the last section though. My legs were screaming at me!!!

I reckon there was a great atmosphere last time. Definitly didn’t come across anyone taking it too seriously.

The best decision we made was not to try and get up the climb as soon as it opened (9am). Looking up from the campsite was like looking at a line of ants doing a climb!

By half ten or so, there was hardly anyone in the way. This time i shall be only riding the timed climb section, save my energy for the rest of the sections.

People who were pushing up the climb were haapy to get out the way of timed riders, with abit of notice from me. Same on Skyline descent when i came hammering down to the last corner to find Doddy(MBUK) with a photographer sessioning a section!!! They didn’t hold me up though.

Hey Fingerbike – What middle ring are you running? I run a 36 which was catching the swing arm when shifting down to the granny ring. Had to fit a spacer behind the driveside External BB cup.

Would a 113 Square Taper still be correct?

    nickegg

I wonder if numbers will be down on last year after that timing farce? I’ve already entered as it’s the only race that involves the kind of riding i like.

Would have done the Enduro Avalanche at Kielder too but i’m getting married that weekend!

Will definitly be entering that next year though.

    nickegg

Yeah, i somehow doubt any sponsors etc would have wanted to be involved if there weren’t assurances about timing.

It didn’t bother me much, i know i beat my mate and lets face it thats the most important thing!

More annoying were the big group camping next to us who kept us up until 4am!!! on race day.

Whats the opinion on SPD’s V’s Flats for racing. I noticed Rowan Sorrell using SPD’s, he’s usally on flats. Is there really an advantage?

Thanks! Frame is actually silver but could do with a re-spray now (its a 2007 frame).

Yeah, forks are actually Vanilla R 15QR which i built up myself. White is usually only on the Float range of forks.

Just need to decide on what colour to spray it!
