    Almost certainly a worn axle.

I had exactly the same problem a few months ago……the axle had worn were a couple of the bearings sat.

I’ve been running a 24/36/Bash set-up for three years and find it perfect for pretty much all my usual trails.

Only spin out on some long and fairly steep roads around here. The drop to the granny ring is alot though but i rarely use it.

    Long is what you need.

Medium is for a dual ring chainset set-up i.e 24/36. Max is usually around 36/38 i think.

Short are only used on DH bikes due to the close ratio cassettes they usually run.

    nickegg

Well that depends on what chainset and cassette you’re running.

On a trail bike you’ll need either long or medium.

We’ll need more info i’m afraid!

Currently running a 75mm Gravity stem on my 5. Steep climbs do require some re-positioning in order to keep the front down.

But its worth it for the quick steering response.

We also changed the sugar to Muscovado, makes them taste real nice.

We got the recipe from an issue of WMB along with one for shortbread and cake.

Amount depends on how wide you cut them.

We use that recipe for our weekday lunches too, makes 10-12 decent size bits.

    Try this…..

    200g Margarine
    100g Brown Sugar
    Golden Syrup
    Black Treacle
    300g Porridge Oats
    100g Raisins
    75g Soft-dried figs
    50g Soft-dried Apricots.

    1. Set oven to 150 or 140 for fan-assisted, shelf in the middle.
    2. Stick big pan on scales and measure in the marge and brown sugar and heat on the a medium hob until it’s all melted nicely.
    3. Add a tablespoon of golden syrup and half a tablespoon of treacle.
    4. Add porridge oats and fruit of choice and mix together well.
    5. Line a shallow medium sized tin with baking paper and pour in mixture, flatten it down to an even thickness with the back of a spoon.
    6. Stick it in the oven for 20 mins.
    7. Once done for 20 mins, remove and divide up with a knife as desired and leave to cool and set.
    8. Wrap in clingfilm or put in a sealed tub and they should last for a couple of weeks.

Trust me, these are great. We’ve been using this recipe for 3 years and always goes down well. We switch from Raisins to cranberries to whatever takes our fancy and they always taste great.

    Enjoy!

    Nick.

So skill has nothing to do with it either :-)

It’s just that i was staying in Thornthwaite for a week last september and rode Whinlatter everyday and didn’t find it especially slippery and it rained everyday!

I was using Kenda Nevegals 2.1 (DTC Rear/Stick-e Front) FWIW. My girlfriend had no problems with Panacer Cinders either.

or perhaps CRC have to rely on RM/Parcel Force. Once it’s left their warehouse there’s not much they can do is there

All i can add is that “ghetto” just works. As long as you follow the various instructions/videos to the letter it works a treat.

I decided to switch to tubeless when my tyres were knackered and went with Maxxis(Minion front/Crossmark rear) as they seemed highly recommended by Just Riding Along….and they were right!

Minion was a piece of pee to get seated with a track pump and sealed up, Crossmark took a good few attempts with a track pump to seat and seal but got there in the end. It’s a eXCeption version so does have slightly more porous sidewalls. All sealed up now though.

As for long term….we’ll just have to wait and see!

FWIW i was using DT E540 rims with just a Schwalbe 20″ BMX tube. No tape underneath etc.

The point, it would seem, was to ask if doing something one way was correct and then question any other methods suggested

If you hold brake levers down with bands you shouldn’t have to bleed them, also the forks only need inverting every so often. It doesn’t take long for the oil to run down to the foam rings.

You may find it easier to just take off the caliper and remove the lower leg assembly and add oil that way.

That method makes it alot easier to wipe out seals.

Well, you’d think the riding would help but for the 3 years i’ve been riding with that lot it seems to not be working :D

Whilst on the weight saving thing…..Why don’t people just lose some weight themselves???? or is that too obvious?

A chap who comes out on our LBS rides is forever trying weight saving bits and bobs but does nothing about losing the fair sized gut he carries around!!!!

Wow! ….a couple of hundred grams is going to make all the difference isn’t it!

Surely not worth the risk unless you’re insane.

Running a Crossmark eXCeption as “ghetto” on my 5. No problems so far. Sidewalls are thinner than the Minion on the front though.

Sealing the sidewalls took awhile longer than the Minion but has been fine since.

My usual riding spots aren’t especially rocky so i guess toughness depends on where you ride.

I got away with using a track pump with a Maxxis Minion front and Crossmark rear although the crossmark was abit of a ball ache, it took a few attempts but that was the eXCeption model which may have had something to do with it.

Managed it in the end by fitting a schreader adaptor to the presta valve and using the other part of my pump. Seemed to work!!

Seeing as i actually have a compressor and inflater already, i really should just get a hose and make life easier!

It’s no urban myth. No religious material or hymns are allowed at a civil ceremony ie Registry office etc.

FWIW DT E540 rims are very easy to get tyres on and off. I have used WTB, Conti Mountain Kings, Kenda Nevegals and Maxxis with no real isssues.

My particular rims weigh 520g so barely any heavier than 5.1D’s and are pretty damn strong.

[plus being Swiss I hate the idea of supporting the French economy]

So why aren’t you using DT Swiss then

I’m Swiss/British so my bike consists of Hope/DT Swiss where possible :D

Seriously though, Tubeless doesn’t sound right for you at all. Constant tyre swapping and Tubeless systems just don’t mix IMO (Unless you’re not planning on using Latex with your tubeless system).

My partners had them fitted to her new Yeti. Bike shop said it was really easy to fit as it came with a whole assortment of fittings to suit different brakes.

LBS reckoned it was alot better than the usual Goodridge kits he has to fit for customers.

I will be getting a set for my Orange sometime soon. Can’t recommend HEL kits enough. Get it!

    Looks trick in Black!

My wife has Fox 32 Vanilla R, LBS run a Fox 32 Float R on their demo and a friend has just built one up with Fox 36 Float R.

Having ridden all three i would say they all suit the bike, just depends on what/where you ride i guess.

Using normal single ply maxxis Minion and Crossmark here. I don’t run pressures lower than 35psi as i found the tyres do sqirm abit.

Went out last night without checking the pressures for a couple of weeks and achieved my first ever “burp” after landing a jump less than smoothly. A few blasts with my pump and i was fine. I’m not after super grippy tyres just no more thorn punctures.

Not sure if this will be of any help….but i run a Shimano Hone crankset which i initally ran with Truvative Bash/36/24 rings without any probs.

Have recently replaced 36 ring with a Middleburn Hardcoat Slickshift and it’s been running fine for a couple of months.

As long the BCD is the same (which it is) then you should be fine.

Where the hell do all these bikes go?

I live just south of Bristol, very rural but certainly not safe. Been here 2 years and neighbours have been broken into twice. No idea why we havn’t though. Bikes and brick shed is alarmed which might help, i hope.

My LBS was done over a couple of years ago when i lived in Clevedon. Took my bike in one saturday for a service, strange people look around shop then leave, bike shop owners locks up for the weekend. Returns monday to realise my bike wasn’t where he left it!!! He works out that one of the strange customers took my bike on his way out the back door!!

3 days later the shop is ransacked, 5 bikes stolen and how did they get in? Through the back door.

Clevedon area has been suffering alot recently from bike thefts. Someone knows exactly what they’re after it would seem.

We have taken to putting both bikes in the car when possible. We live off a busy road so following us or staking out the house would be pretty hard without looking obvious. F**king ridiculous we even have to worry about something like this.

Good point regarding accidents. On our last visit a chap had broken his collar bone. He was looking pretty pale!!! That is certainly not a reflection of the trail though. People make mistakes on any trail anywhere.

If you’re not confident to hit a tabletop fast then don’t. Simple as that. i think some of the other purpose built trials in South Wales let you ride with your mind switched off (no bad thing IMO). However, clearing tabletops, doubles etc does require some thought and skills different to those you require for other trails.

At brechfa it is easy to find yourself going faster than you thought as the surface is so smooth. I guess some just get carried away.

I think you’ll find everyone DID read your post, hence the responses

Those trails do not HAVE to be ridden fast or smooth at all. My partner found them great fun even though she likes to keep boths wheels on the ground, where possible. They do a great job of helping you concentrate on handling the bike and by the end we always want to vome back and do it faster.

Buy whatever you like. I would have ALOT more bikes if i could afford them, most of which i probably wouldn’t need but then thats the fun of it right?

    nickegg

That’s just my point, Brechfa doesn’t offer anything really different to Afan. It’s even more manicured and bermed. You could ride a CX bike on that stuff. I mean how many table tops are there…30?

WTF! On what trail at Afan are there as many huge berms/tabletops/doubles/step-ups and step-downs as there are at Brechfa?

Well…i look forward to the day i see someone whip a CX bike over a tabletop!!!!!

Have you actually ridden either centre.
