I had one for 3 years, barely put a foot wrong. Diesel estate though. Would have thought the petrol fairly bombproof given it’s likely to be fairly low mileage.

If comparing spec go for design spec over SRI, SRI might be top spec but it’s very spartan. Cruise control an easy add on afterwards if you wish which is very good. The wing mirrors are really crap they just self destruct, loads of astra’s have them cracked and hanging off. Thankfully they have black trim around the colour coded bit so you can bodge with insulation tape and no-one will notice :-)

Google will reveal the common faults, the only problem I had with it was both rear springs snapped around 80k which apparently is common, worth checking those. Mine did spend a lot of it’s life lugging loads though. I’d also say if it’s got a few miles on check water pump and cambelt (if it has one) have both been done, vauxhall recommend every 80-100k depending on engine which I think is optimistic. They looked at me funny when I told them I wanted mine done at 60k and it wasn’t due for another 40….

Depends on your other measurements, I’m sure others will know more than me as I’ve not long gone to the dark side, but I’m 6’2 and ride a 56. 63 sounds far too big to me!

Poggy do you mind if I ask your weight?
Rs80 are the obvious choice given a few places have them between 320-325 which is quite a chunk less than fulcrums/ksyriums its the flex I’m worried about given the low spoke count.

Yeah you can ride through I’m sure but is it open yet? It was being repaired wasn’t it?
Not sure if they would have thought to repair the towpaths and put in some lights whilst they were there, I don’t think I’d want to ride it as it is now… There’s sure to be nasty things in there!

Not overly hard, get a set of radio keys when ordering an interface, it will mostly be plug and play apart from you’ll need to take a switched live from the cigarette lighter to power the unit and maybe take bits of the dash apart to hide the box somewhere….

Have you got the USB port as well or not? If so, then you need a Y cable to feed the ipod to the usb and aux in.

If not, you need an adapter to connect the ipod to the stereo, usually one that goes into the cd changer port. This should give you connectivity and at least basic controls from the steering wheel, back/forward. It will also be powered to charge the ipod.

There’s a list on there of products – you’ll need to know the model of your head unit to work out what’s best though. I don’t think you can get any of the fancy ones to work with a stock 10 mondeo, so you’ll probably be best off with one of the £50 connects2 units.

Single biggest innovation in the bike world? The Internet.

If not for that we wouldn’t be anywhere near where we are now as a sport.

But yeah, for bikes if I could take one thing of any of my bikes now and put it on my first 90’s rigid it would be my droppy seat post. For road it would be clip less pedals.

The gorge itself is dam released, I think Tues & Fri it releases but i’d be checking first.

You can blast down it in a day – not sure how feasible it is to do a multiday trip, last time I was down there there wasn’t much chance of getting a reliable release let alone 2 days consecutively.

I just bolt on a kayaking policy from Perkins Slade for mine. It used to be adrenaline travel insurance / PS Sports travel, have a google but seems its all under Perkins Slade now.

    http://www.perkins-slade.com/for-sports/sports-quote/travel-insurance

There is another new company offering similar – look on http://www.ukrgb.co.uk. A lot of the usual i.e. dogtag, snowcard, bmc etc are good for policies but not as good if you already have one and just want to bolt something on.

    You’ve answered your own question….!
Been running then for 18 months now and I’m not changing any time soon. Tend to chuck on specialized fast track’s if i’ve got a longer xc slog though cos they are a bit heavy.

Look at orange/ee, they do swappables which don’t come out of data one is sky go. I know this is only an option on android though, not iPhone so possibly it also can’t be done via tethering. Worth asking though?

Yeah still cannondales I think, the mavic car isn’t as useful in the tdf where most riders have massive teams but it can help riders on long breakaways etc when the team car is way behind. It’s just a neutral service vehicle offering help to any rider, wouldn’t say it was strange?

I think it’s got a bigger role in smaller races where you don’t have huge teams behind each rider. Suppose even in the tdf a rider is going to be happier riding 10 minutes on a badly sized aluminium bike with toe clips than sitting on the side of the road!

Always use Ty Isaf now, I’ve stayed in all of them and its the best if you just want to pitch up and camp. Basic but good, cheap and always a space even on summer bank holiday. The owners of the rest all seem to be a bit mardy, especially if you have a group. It’s normally fairly quiet, no noise late at night. If there’s a few of you, just drive into town and get a cab back (I’ve walked it a few times, not too bad a walk if you have a tinny or too.) Or beers and a fire at the campsite.

Yeah it’s short, 120mm on my 20, 105mm on the 18 I think. A lot shorter than older bikes, so there’s likely to be chopping involved, I lopped 20mm off mine to about 210mm. Wouldn’t go shorter than that to avoid issues with swapping, but seems a lot of new frames are shorter in the head tube now.

Is it exactly the same run on the map? I have it occasionally where it gets a bit off tangent, especially on the iPhone. Just done the exact same ride as last night and its recorded an extra 500ft of elevation change.

There’s a KOM on road by me I was trying to get last summer, eventually nailed it after weeks of trying but it didn’t show as it had jumped me to a parallel road for some reason. Go figure! If you check the 2 routes on the map there might be a slight variation causing it.

For maximum style points wear a linen suit…
… a matching panama hat and offer the interviewer pineapple slices with a knowing smile.

Japanese knotweed is a pain in the ass, there’s all kinds of regulations on it and you can even get fined for not treating it or disposing of it correctly. Push that back onto the vendors to sort. It will be expensive and you can’t just do it yourself. (Well you can, but it’s a massive faff – you need to remove it certain ways and dispose of it correctly and even that will probably cost money. Think of it like asbestos.) You really don’t want to get involved in it, think worst case neighbours suing you over it…

The damp issue needs to be looked at by a professional – the valuation reports are just there to cover the mortgagers backs and they’re not going to help you at all, so have your own survey done.

Once you have an idea on cost to make good you can then look to either swallow the cost or adjust your offer accordingly. Remember issues you have could go up to the flats above potentially and give you more grief.

Summer suit! Lightweight jacket and trousers, and a bright tie to distract the interviewer from the damp patches around the neck ;-)

Don’t try and cheat and wear a short sleeved shirt – short sleeves and tie a big no no.

As said above, keep the jacket on, hides the sweaty bits. For maximum style points wear a linen suit…

Sherwood Pines for easy fun as mentioned. You’re only an hour from the peaks though, you could be in Hathersage in that time and open up a world of fantastic riding!

Ashover 40 mins from Nottingham and there’s a nice mix of natural stuff there, easy enough to get round and not get lost – the closest thing in the peaks to you and good.

Unless I was being exceedingly dense they did the same thing on the highlights, the move wasn’t shown. No excuse really, you could argue a live feed maybe but when it’s the highlights it should be that. Unless the feed is controlled by the French and it wasn’t filmed?

During the highlights there was an ad break at 19:30, then another at 19:35. Give it to the BBC!

In short, yes you do if you don’t have both parts paper and photocard you could be slapped with a fine. Speak to the DVLA, I had something similar last year so I sent the forms back special delivery next day with a covering letter and prepaid special delivery envelope as well and had my licence back that week.

Realistically it’s unlikely to cause you a problem i’ve probably spent several months driving in france over the past few years and never had so much as a sniff from the boys in blue but if you don’t have one it’ll be sods law….

You could take the international number for the DVLA with you just in case to dry and get them to fax a certificate of entitlement but for the £15 it’ll cost for special delivery both ways to replace your licence it’s not worth it. You can take other bits of paper as mentioned above and try and sort it if you do get stopped but it’s going to be a lot of faff!

Try a few out, differences in cut/fit/padding can be massive if you get into it and spend a long time using one especially extended periods on a rope i.e. multi pitch belaying. Not as important if you’re mainly going to stay indoors but still important, as mentioned ignore anything slimmed down or alpine.

I’ve always used Wild Country, have 3 or 4 and all fit well for long days, currently using a syncro which seems to be no longer in the range.

Belay device, Big caribena and DMM bug is simple and easy to use.
