Mine coming up to 12 months old and not missed a beat, best forks i’ve ever had. Only grumble is having to have another kind of suspension oil in the oil box, I now need a box all on it’s own to store all the different oils & fluids I need to service 2 bikes!
The Avid brakes, on the other hand…
nickdaviesFull MemberYou need part p etc now don’t you?
I’d imagine you also need minimum 6mm 2+1 cable as well (which is supposed to be assessed by someone qualified), and i’m pretty sure you do need an isolation switch in the same room, pull cord for obvious reasons…nickdaviesFull MemberYeah, why not. If they recognise anything it’ll be the information you won’t change IE name address. If you make a few changes it’ll still be broadly the same if they compare them anyway.
Make it a bit special, I had one a while ago with imprinted flowers on the envelope and the paper was scented. 8O
Although if the last one worked are you not applying for your own job?
nickdaviesFull MemberAs above, assuming it’s the same as the new Pike, you need to remove 10mm from the air shaft – this process. From what I can gather, if you just take 10mm off the shaft, the internal threads are still long enough to accommodate the fork lower bolt, but that may be BS. But basically it looks pretty straightforward, about to do the same to my Pike, though I bought a spare air shaft first to allow for disasters…
If you’ve bought a spare air shaft – why would you not just buy the right sized one instead of cutting one down?
nickdaviesFull MemberLast time I looked at it, bike insurance was prohibitely expensive as a standalone policy. I checked a few out and it was much cheaper on house insurance. That’s not cheap though, I’m paying about 5% of bike value with m&s now, the good old 4k value undeclared policies have stopped. All risks still covered though, so stolen or crashed I get a new one. I checked, even includes racing use!
Downide is there though a claim will put your house insurance up. I think a lot of house insurance policies are removing bike cover from outbuildings also, which won’t help. I think I’d put more effort into preventing the theft in the first place than flaky insurance that will try and avoid paying out and then give you a wheelies voucher if you’re lucky.
I’m tempted to go without next year and just minimise the risk. Bikes live inside though, not sure I’d be as happy if they were garaged.
nickdaviesFull MemberAngrier than a man with a fork in a world of soup… Does he have a book for these things?
nickdaviesFull MemberI was going to say.. I looked at this thread expecting a load of hope are shite, shimano Deore are amazing posts!
Seems the industry has completely changed in the past few weeks…nickdaviesFull MemberAlphas I quite enjoyed, until they stopped making it and didn’t bother letting the storyline play out.
Fringe is very good, orange is the new back was good 1st season but I can’t get into the new one.nickdaviesFull Membersq225917 – Member

Not sure if that was the best attempt at customer service, but it made me chuckle!

Sorry, actually, Froomey just called me and stop me to sign Wiggo, he and his wife against his carrier development in cycling :-(. #messSKYDetails
I thought Wiggo was off to Greenedge?
nickdaviesFull MemberAs above ^ it’s all irrelevant for the first 2 years, as barring exceptional circumstances they could offer you anything you wanted and still kick you out without even mentioning probation.
Only you can decide whether you want to risk that – if you’re currently employed you’ll definitely be out of a job with no guarantee of one on the other side, and you should have more of an idea of if it’s worth that risk from the interview? If you’re not working now then nothing to lose.
It actually wouldn’t bother me – i’d see it as them being open and covering their own arses. If they were desperate for a filler for the summer and had a bit of brain they’d give you a straight offer and pull it off you after 6 months.
nickdaviesFull MemberAnd why do none of ze germans have the reverb in the 31.6/420 right hand remote flavour I want for 199EUR? :-(
nickdaviesFull MemberGiven them a go, for £320 with tubeless bits it’s a chunk less than hope so we shall see how they get on!
None in the country for a couple of weeks so time to get finding some other bits of build kit :-)nickdaviesFull MemberThanks for the feedback both, the concerns about the rear QR were that I noticed the difference in stiffness when I changed my superstar rims from standard QR spindles to the 10mm QR. Enough for me not to want to go back.
This was however on my old spesh FSR – whether or not i’d notice it as much on a stiff racy hard tail is another matter. At least with the hopes I can find out- it’s not an option on the Kinesis wheels which is a bit of a shame.
nickdaviesFull MemberIf you treat it as any other restaurant, then yeah. It’s not really one to think about going to, just basic grub done pretty well, not that expensive – just give it a whirl, not much different to any other italian on the high street. Don’t go expecting anything fantastic, the service isn’t great and they like you to wait 1/2 an hour before going to your table in the convenient shop full of Jamie’s crap… The restaurant in Nottingham was quite quirky and interesting though.
Have the starter meat platter, and don’t expect to leave much room for dessert.. Om nom! The plate was bigger than the table!
nickdaviesFull MemberThanks, found the no.42 at fatbirds, and the frame a bit cheaper. Job done, until I saw the they have the sync frame at 15% off…. :|
nickdaviesFull MemberOk, advice taken. Your thread on the sync sparked the ff29 idea anyway! Would much prefer the sync though, if only funds allowed. :-(
I’ve managed to find a couple but they are all labelled as c-40, fsa and crc sites show no.42 in brackets next to the c-40 model name, this is still the right one? I can’t find anywhere with the 42 in stock so I’m assuming it’s been replaced.
nickdaviesFull MemberThe parts manual shows both as totally dissasemblable, so I was hoping I could remove the button and the barb and just swap the bodies over.
Wonder if I say loco 3 times he’ll magically appear with the answer?!
nickdaviesFull MemberYeah you can just need to fit the correct top cap and remove the return spring inside.
Speak to loco for the top cap, he’s sorted one out for me before.
Or if the two of you both have the same fitting on top/ damper assembly you could just swap? Not sure how easy it would be to remove and refit the return spring as opposed to just disabling it.nickdaviesFull MemberI’ve moved up to Sion in Switzerland and had a cracking day in the sun, it’s all so changeable though I think you just pick somewhere and see what happens. Had a day in Tignes last week in a bit of sun and a day in Pila that was dryish, and apart from that it’s just been a sodden holiday! Forecast here is sun tomorrow rain in pm, rain weds then good rest of the week.
nickdaviesFull MemberJust turned up to torrential rain and forecast showing the same for all the main bike areas for the next 10 days…
Anybody got any ideas for a detour?nickdaviesFull MemberI will be alerted and take my rather nice grade one English willow cricket bat with me, which I have been known to wield with result.
You’ll spend longer inside than they will, and that’s if they don’t get off!
nickdaviesFull MemberI thought it was great, quirky but very watchable.
Don’t think I fit in here though, I thought Fargo was a pile of crap and didn’t think much more to it’s recent spin off… ;-)nickdaviesFull MemberSomeone out in haute savoie ordered a chainring bolt from CRC, and they posted it in a box so big it contained our entire climate
Well considering it’s hot and sunny here at the moment and it would take CRC 2 weeks to deliver a chain ring bolt to England, let alone France – it should be reet when I turn up at the end of the month! :-)
nickdaviesFull MemberNo one seems to have stated the obvious, the poor bugger’s married….
nickdaviesFull MemberSuffering a bit, ain’t they!
Website barely works at the best of times, I couldn’t get any promo codes to work the other night so ended up just ordering without as it was urgent. 3 days later and they’ve still not bothered to dispatch despite paying extra for speedy delivery.
Placed 2 orders with merlin and 1 with D2D since then, free delivery and arrived the next day. CRC definitely a last resort these days.
Edit: Totally off topic mini rant, sorry…
nickdaviesFull MemberCreating routes is a bit tricky, took me a long time to work out exactly how to do it. On my first test – off road 38k route in the peaks I went wrong twice as it can be a bit tricky following a breadcrumb route, but it swiftly pointed out my error and I got back on track with no major difficulty, but I knew the route from a map. I’d be a bit wary going out cold with it on new terrain. With a guidebook as backup or a map on phone etc no bother.
nickdaviesFull MemberI went with office365 about 18 months ago and it’s been very good, saved a few quid on the new server.
My only niggle with it is dependent on your upload speed – if you want to send large files you have to wait while it sends i.e. if you want to send then go home you can’t, and if you send large files internally they have to go up to the cloud and back down again so by no means instant like they used to be.
It can also be a bit temperamental when syncing between the cloud and the server user management, and some more complex setup stuff hasn’t been straightforward.
nickdaviesFull MemberMine were a struggle, just changed them and the wheel was a bitch to get in. Feels like the fluid has expanded a bit. Knife and swearing got the wheel in, was locked on but elastic band round the lever overnight has seen it reet.
nickdaviesFull MemberSuperstar – Type 8 I think if your frame is 160 disc as standard.
Just checked CRC and the 203 PM is showing in stock from Shimano?nickdaviesFull MemberRaleigh nitro followed by a gt talera with the super light triple triangle. Light being a relative word.. Talera is still going!
nickdaviesFull MemberWooden gate with carpet gripper under the internal top lip… They won’t thank you for it though!
nickdaviesFull MemberAnybody before I punt a tenner?
Canyon strive if that helps.nickdaviesFull MemberThanks chaps, tyres ordered. Now all I have to do is work out exactly which of the random selection of brake adapters avid seems to make will get the big disc on the back…
nickdaviesFull MemberI’ve switched to the 2 pcs photography package for 6 quid a month for Photoshop cs and lightroom.
Think it’s great, hopefully they won’t stick the price up after a year.nickdaviesFull MemberThat’s exactly what my c456 was, loved it till I broke it!
nickdaviesFull Memberuntil the wife finds out you’ve vandalized her bloom

That’s not one i’ve heard before…
Oh, and buy the tool!
nickdaviesFull MemberJust remember plastic bottles are the order of the day – don’t try and use an old coke can… 8O
nickdaviesFull MemberYou don’t actually pay 40% company car tax – you pay 20%. The car tax comes off the personal allowance portion of your salary, and over that comes off your 20%.
Effectively what it does is reduce your allowances, so if you earn 32k, and have 10k of company car tax liability you would effectively have a 42k salary, so you would just have to pay 40% on the extra £400 odd over and above the threshold. You don’t pay a load more on the car.
The situation of paying a load more tax on benefits when you hit 40% doesn’t actually happen as you are just paying more over and above the threshold, but the 40% rate is used as a figure for comparison as that’s effectively what the car is costing you. Just had this conversation with the accountant!
nickdaviesFull Member8000 in debit a few years ago due to incorrect meter readings for nearly 5 years…..
Was a bit of a shock of a bill when that turned up! Off to the ombudsman we went… Do I win?
