10 mins each with 5 mins rest between them.

That’s more Stepto than Tabata.and does not provide the greatest gain. You can’t push yourself as hard for 10min as you can for 20 seconds. Which is the point.

I’d love to know how the body changes differently based on Tabata or full blown circuits for an hour?

There’s a comparison of Tabata and other types of training high intensity intermittent training here…

I did them in 2004. They hurt. There was vomit. They worked.

    What sort of car OP?

Most estates will swallow a tandem wheels off. It was one of the factors when we chose our Mondeo. Now we just use a boot rack with wheels off.

No. With age (should) come skill and finesse so you don’t get beat up.

    Just my 2 cents.

Never got on with Ritchey Z-Max tyres except on the back of the tandem.

But absolute worst for me would be Kenda Small Block 8s on anything. IIRC STW review was practically orgasmic about how brilliant they were. That’s when I started paying more attention to who wrote reviews.

So who would Nico vouilloz turn to for coaching? bearing in mind he’s the best bike handler I’ve ever seen!

yeah cos you’re always bumping into Nico at the top of red runs dithering about.

    That’s a different discussion altogether.

Raising the example of top riders who may or may not need coaching is not relevant to the discussion of mincers who don’t have the self awareness or humility to admit they could do with a little help.

May even have a cheeky weigh in after a big poo. Just because.

You owe me a new keyboard. There’s a thread on /b about “things you do you think no-one else does” That must surely be on there.

@ _tom_ there’s a difference between pushing a burly DH bike back to the top of a run and mincing 😉

t the mag seems like a parochial Hebden Bridge MTB club newsletter much of the time (seems that way to me anyway)?

at least it’s not just me that thinks it or dares to say it then. be carefull, you may be on the receiving end of online sneering, even if you explain the rationale for your opinion. just because some of the mag story writers treat their opinion as fact they do seem to project this behaviour onto other people.

Euro. None of us are saying you can’t. We’re saying that some of the people out there – see video of mincer* on 4″ travel bike dicking about at the top of the slab earlier in this thread – definitely would. Not only does he mince the slab but his position on the rest of the run could do with help.

    * Next time I’m back in the northwest I will happily meet him and help him out not just slate him from behind my keyboard.

Saw a bloke pushing a five inch travel full susser at Woburn yesterday. By “saw” I mean “rode past on my hardtail”.

I think he could benefit from some riding lessons.

    He’s not unusual.

It also appears someone has tagged some of the more interesting downhill sessions at Woburn on Strava. I have no hope if ever catching the top riders, but there are lots of slower ones, even accounting for the fact I stopped to take pictures. Now unless they were all stopping to take pictures too that’s a lot of people who could do with some gentle help.

    And wrenches.

    Are you being deliberately obtuse?

Yes you can get to Red Bull Rampage level self taught but that’s an exception. Look up non sequitur sometime.

The evidence is, and it’s clear if you ride a trail centre, that most people could do with some help. But won’t admit this to themselves, and instead of spending an hour with a coach or on a skills session would rather spend an hour behind the keyboard writing “what bike/tyre/wide handlebar to compensate for my lack of ability” threads.

MTFU can be the best advice there is and the worst. It can lead to those little light coming on moments or it can make you dead.

So go and get coaching where someone is on hand to help guide folks to the light.

But then whenever there’s a skill thread hordes of folk come on here saying they “don’t need one” making excuses that they’re “good enough” or can “teach themselves”, or “unlearn bad habits” simply through self awareness.

The evidence would suggest otherwise. The only thing they can do is fool themselves.

Just confirmed apex of Woburn switchbacks are 40 degrees so anyone claiming scaredyness at 36 might as well give up riding now and leap into the arms of Shaggy a la Scooby Doo.

    explain?

at least one video on this thread shows a rider with all the gear and no idea. instead of spending money in skill compensating long travel bikes, wide bars, big forks and sticky tyres some of these riders would be better off spending their money on a skills course.

Unfortunately Patches O’Houlihan and his bag of wrenches came to an unfortunate end in a tragic accident in a Vegas casino. He’s the only coach I can think of with enough MTFU to spare.

I make no apologies if that sounds harsh.

It may be steep but it’s short with nice roll in and out. There are steeper , but even shorter, switchback trails at Woburn Sands if you know where to look. And no-one accuses Woburn of being extreme.

you are obviously an exceptional rider then.

no I’m not. I would describe myself as merely competent, not even good.

I do think based on what I see on the trails that the standard of riding has fallen dramatically in the 21st Century, see the video evidence on page 1.
