Old 70’s reinforced concrete fireplace in lounge was removed a couple of weeks ago by me and and a friend, time to make good before the plasterer arrives.

Halfway through installing the HardieBacker board.

    Finished and filled in!!

This room has been prepped completely so we were trying out colours to see what works hence the patchwork wall.

Must be nice to be able to afford professionals in to do the work!

I’ve been at my house until midnight most nights and weekends, learnt how to do quite a lot myself, crazy hard work but saved a lot of money.

I have a quite powerful rear wheel drive Volvo which came with Michelin Cross Climate tyres on it when I bought it. I’ve been out intentionally trying to wheelspin it in the wet and I had to try really hard to get it to become unstuck. Bought new wheels with normal tyres on and I haven’t changed them back – crikey the difference is amazing, they are like having greased tyres, slips and slides all over.
The CrossClinate tyres were just as good in slush, even with an auto RWD car like mine.
I know they aren’t winter tyres, they are meant to be all rounders, but I’m seriously impressed and will buy them for my own car in the future.

    I’ve had a few nice retro bikes…..

1992 GT Tequesta, replica of my first ever MTB, rode really nicely.

Me on it in the Dark Peak….

Why the smeg did I sell those new Onza L-bends??? Dog!

    1991 Haro Extreme

31.8mm bars in 1991!! These are the NOS bars and stem that came on this bike new.

Rode like a BMX, ace uphill and in the air but stupidly harsh on the bumps. Still shouldn’t have sold it. :(

    Another one….

Dave Lloyd Beez Kneez… oh my word the paint on this is amazing.

“gotta feel for the 1100 folks who ll be losing their jobs.. if they were miners or steel workers there would be uproar but as their only shop assistants no one seems to care.”

Amen to that, but they always seem to be treated as the lowest of the low anyway by most of the public.

I helped out at our church when a bloke and his wife I knew (but not close to) lost their child, it was just before she was due so she had to give birth to her dead son/daughter (can’t remember which). I say this as one memory from this which will stick with me forever was the dad carrying the tiny coffin down the aisle. I wept and I still have to fight back tears every time I think of it.

The joyous thing is that they went on to have 2 lovely kids later on.

I’m pretty solid emotionally but I’m not sure I could cope with your situation. But you will do, just stick together and don’t be afraid to cry, to grieve, it has to happen and it’ll be worse if you fight against it.

Here’s hoping and praying for a new thread from you one day titled “Mini Big Yim born today – woohoo!”

I think these people on the CE show would probably give a lot to charity anyway, they aren’t any names I’ve heard of and a fair amount are anonymous. There certainly isn’t any mention of them apart from their name and that’s only during the auction. So they bid, possibly get their name mentioned once or twice during the show then that’s it. Hardly willy waving.

    I can’t believe some people ^^^^

One of the biggest bands in the U.K. have donated a free gig to the highest bidder, someone has offered to give £475,000 for that which will go to children who need it most.

I wish I could join in, I would have loved to drive all Chris Evans Ferraris which they auctioned off in previous years. Great idea and may it continue.

I have seen those single room heat exchangers, they look ideal for my needs. Any more feedback on how much it works, where it’s installed etc?

Air circulation is possible, either in or out, but not sure which way it should go.

Pumping air out of the cellar fear might pull dampness out of the walls which are underground.

Pushing air in makes sense to me, like one of those loft ventilation units, but pushing damp air in I would assume make things worse.

Looked as desiccant dehumidifiers – can get one for £120 ish locally.

Thanks, but I can’t afford to have a company come in and install an expensive system. They seem to have mixed reviews anyway so I would steer clear!

I can fit anything myself so I don’t need to pay anyone else to do it.

It’s not that the price has gone up, its that they put the prices up to immediately do another “special offer, it’s amazing be quick!” but the price is actually more than it was 24hrs previously.

I bought the car I always wanted earlier this year.

Nowadays we worry so much about mpg and practical space and safety. Sometimes you got to just live a little, ok?

BTW My car does 18mpg and I spun it in the middle of town yesterday. That’s something I won’t forget!

The noise I thought wasn’t a great issue. If you’re using power tools it isn’t going to be quiet anyway.

I would second the above. I am a DIYer but doing up a whole house so I bought a £400 DeWalt twin pack brushless 18v drill/driver and impact driver.

I reckon if you’re just doing the odd job around the house a quality cordless drill driver and leave it at that. The impact driver comes into its own if you have to do loads of screws, or screw big screws in repeatedly. The way they work means the screw heads don’t strip and they have loads more torque so can put huge screws in without damaging the screw head.

Mine has 3 settings the lowest of which was great for putting plasterboard screws in.

You also don’t have to keep swapping over from drill to screwdriver bit which is nice, and the unit is smaller so you can get it in places the drill/driver won’t go.

A friend of mine (female) really wanted one of those. In W Yorks it would be a nightmare as the brakes will be lame, it’ll weigh as much as an aircraft carrier and the gears will be a hindersnce.

I explained to her that she’ll love owning it and looking at it but she will hate riding it and it’ll be a waste of money and won’t be used. I built her a nice looking hybrid type bike which she loves riding – phew!

Err keeping an expensive phone in your pocket with lots of metal objects?

At least give it a fighting chance!

I always have an otter box for my phone and a screen cover. My 4 iPhones have been dropped, thrown, ridden over and never had more than tiny marks on the case.

I think most people have some sort of situation where they are most comfortable smoking and when you can’t smoke in those situations it can be hard. For me it was going out to the pub, the wetness of the drink counteracted the dryness of the smoking and vice versa, so when I stopped it was hard going out for a drink as I felt something was missing.

Some people like smoking after food, or with a coffee. The first cig of the day is a shared experience for all smokers though!!

I have a decent wage, and my friends are generally middle class type families with kids. We often talk about money and stuff so I have a good idea that not one of them could justify £4K on a school trip for one person.

My wife and I went to California for 2.5 weeks, stayed in a nice central SF hotel for 5 days and hired a fancy car to tour round Cali in for the rest of the trip, all in including flights and food and entry to stuff cost £3700 for both of us! Are these kids staying at 5* places or something?

And you’ll have to cough up spending money too….

The big multiple stores are VERY careful to follow the letter of the law, I know because I used to work for them. As they have a higher profile they tend to get taken to task more often by customers so it’d be difficult to get away with it.

However “price establishment” is common. Go into any DFS or similar and they’ll have some very expensive sofas around, maybe at the back of the store. No one will buy them (and if they do huge profits!) but they are put on display for 28days then reduced.

Not all the stores have to do it as it has to be a certain percentage of stores that have to stock it at the higher price. We used to get strict instructions to have x on sale from a certain date OR ELSE!

Bit more complex nowadays with the internet but it should be easy to track PX as they are essential one store.

They should keep records of what each item has been priced at for historically so they can prove they are complying.

Smaller stores or one man bands tend to get away with dodgy pricing as they just aren’t in the spotlight as much.

If anyone genuinely thinks that PX aren’t following the rules then report them to trading standards, we used to get them in our store occasionally to audit our pricing and they are very thorough.

Put the cameras up, also install some sort of elaborate Indiana Jones booby trap whicj culminates in her running down the road pursued by a huge boulder before she narrowly escapes and you snatch back the ill gotten gains

That’ll leave a lasting memory of what not to do. :)

I’ve never been into it but I understand there is a big community around it and going to a club with it playing is what I was about to suggest, same as Rusty Spanner (Colne Muni – is that in Huddersfield, I live in Huddersfield and not heard of it?).

It’s well known in Retrobike circles how good the originals are to ride, they are expensive to buy an original because they can be used if you want to and they’ll be good fun.

Any popular compilation will be ok to start with, gives you an idea of artists you might like and provides a stepping stone to more music. Don’t overthink it, just buy examples above and get listening!
