Galowayboy, thanks for recommendation but they are the other side of Hudds to me so a long long journey.

I don’t need out of hours. Yet.

Wrightyson – yes I know that, we do confined spaces training at work so I’m not going down that inspection hole at all (about 8 foot deep!).

I want to use a local company hence the request for recommendations.

Way Of The Roses is very very good. No it’s not a short route but a delight – I’ve lived and travelled in the area for years but Sustrans found lovely little roads all over the place for that route that keep you away from big roads. Seen plenty of kids do it!

From what you posted. Which made you sound like a Plonker pointer

    Do keep up. 😀

I looked into being a sparky after being in retail for 9 years after uni and hating it. But there’s no way in, I just don’t understand why they don’t take on aprentiships for older people – people who know what they want rather than some kid who is only doing it to get enough cash for their Corsa and getting legless on a weekend.

I’ve laboured for a builder and helped out an electrician, both friends of mine and if I ever lost my job I’d ask if they could take me on when they could.

To be honest SSCL are beyond bad. I work in the civil service and they messed up a load of people’s pay here that they’ve had to pay compensation – quite a few people got hundreds of pounds each. Can’t remember why exactly but that situation had to be pretty extreme for that to happen.

Most things seeem to be ok with them for me but as far as I can tell moving teams/jobs they just can’t cope with. They must have an escalation process – follow it!

For the price you paid for the Mecan you could have bought a proper MPV/SUV and a proper (used) Porsche. Opportunity missed!!!

What happened to the original doors?

I restored all of mine – took a while but I reckon it was much cheaper and probably quicker than buying and hanging new ones.

Most volume door manufacturers will state on their packaging how much you can cut off the doors. If you cut too much off if can affect the joints and strength of the door so don’t be tempted to cut too much off.

From what I remember you are more likely to be able to cut more off the height (sometimes you can cut more off the bottom) than the width but I think you’ll struggle to find one you can reduce as much as you want.

You could buy one and cut it down and see what it’s like. Remember as well that the style of the door might also dictate how much you can remove before it starts to look a bit odd, especially if panneled or in a particular design. Depending on the interior construction of the door if you cut too much off the width there may not be enough solid wood left to fit a catch.

Setting his bike up at the extreme will give him no choice but to adopt the correct position.

Or could injure him badly and affect his life forever after.

What a daft thing to say. Drop bars aren’t for everyone, just accept it.

You have reinforced my first post anyway. 🙄

Careful OP, the rabid drop bar fanatics will tell you are wrong, despite all your years of trying. They just don’t understand that flat bars are better for most people, especially off road.

People said my tourer would handle like crap when I converted it to flats, but hey it handles really well and is comfy, but they don’t want to hear that.

    Enjoy your new comfort ride!

I got 11m2 of 20mm engineered oak flooring for my hallway for £60 delivered and it’s new! Then I got enough 20mm thick solid oak flooring to do a bedroom for £50 delivered from the same place.

£150 for a £500 silver Victorian style column radiator (new)
    £100 for a £700 white one (2nd hand)

We just need a million reasonable people to change their minds about their vote, and some assistance from demographics.

I voted to stay in but if there was another vote I would change my mind and vote out of the EU. So you’d need 1,000,001 to change their mind now, and I’m not the only one.

I educated myself before the vote and found out a lot more after which has swayed my mind the other way.

And the rabid insults, put downs and downright disgusting behaviour of remainers to people who voted out made me damn sure changing my mind is a good thing. To be honest some of you guys should be ashamed of yourselves, accusing leave voters of things you are way more guilty of since the result went against you.

I like pale colours with bold colour rugs pictures etc. Unless its a period house it always looks like “arty” wife and beaten down husband choices.

haha you could almost be describing my wife and I – not offended though. I reckon you are right though – but the ones which don’t work are done by the people who think they are arty but really don’t understand colour. It’s not easy to get it right but staying away from the bog standard Dulux/Crown DIY brochures is a good start – the darker colours in them are so naff – very “bright” and “sharp” looking in my eyes – like public toilet colours. There are loads of other colour ranges out there which are so much more subtle.

I’m into grey walls and white woodwork with mid century furnishings. Grey sounds dull but it’s actually quite a strong look and goes well with the warm brown/teak of cadovious wall units and contrasts with white shelving (I have tomado covering one wall) big prints with bold colours and a few herdwick sheepskins on seating make it feel very warm.

I haven’t actually painted it yet as I’m waiting for floor and skirting to be done then I need to get the right grey as it’s a north facing room so need a tiny bit of warmth in it and not too dark.

Can’t stand white/magnolia, looks like you can’t be bothered.

We used grey in our bathroom which is an Edwardian bathroom and it looks amazing even when the light isn’t coming in.

It can be very difficult with stronger colours to choose correctly as a slight change in shade can make a real difference.

My wife is an artist and we don’t have our house in crazy colours but they are always darker and more striking than most boring white/magnolia rooms.

Nothing bores me more now than seeing a typical STW room with a log burner, white walls and a wooden floor. May as well live in an office…

Anyway, my tips from 20 years of decorating our own houses and learning from my wife – she does the colour choosing and I handle the technical elements… :D. This isn’t gospel but its what I’ve learnt and it works for us.

    – Don’t used cheap paint. Avoid the DIY sheds for paint, avoid consumer standard Dulux/Crown/Valspar etc paint and go to where the pro’s buy their paint. We have an excellent decorators centre in Hudds where we have got great advice and help over the years. Yes the trade paints sometimes cost more but they are nicer to use and need less coats. I painted one room in our new house a dark jade colour over a light green and only needed 2 coats. If my technique was better i might have managed 1 coat. I like the Dulux trade range personally but the crown is good too. Macphersons paint has a good rep at my shop too (their eclipse white trade paint is simply amazing, I haven’t used better and its so cheap).

    – Match the colour range to the age of the house. This isn’t a hard and fast rule as if you have a Victorian house which has had all the original features ripped out and you want a minimalist look then anything goes. We’ve just bought an Edwardian house and we have gone for Art deco/Edwardian style colours as they tend to go well. Various companies do ranges to match certain periods – we have had good success with Dulux heritage range ourselves. farrow and Ball and Little green do some really nice colours.

-dont buy too many testers, but buy enough!!! I hate the little pots with brushed you buy in the DIY sheds – get a proper 250ml pot mixed up at the decorators centre and paint a large area with it. Strong colours can look different in different areas of the room so try it on different walls. Try to narrow down to 2 or 3 colours to go for before buying testers.

    – Paint round the windows so you can see the colour against the wood colour, pic below shows how we did this in our bedroom.

And it ended up looking like this…

    – dont be afraid to change your mind. If it doesn’t work then re-do it. We painted our whole lounge in a particular green as the testers seemed to be great but when the whole room was done it just wasn’t right. We tend to find greens really hard to get the right one…..

    First color….

    Too light!

    Ended up like this…

    – don’t be afraid to copy whats in a magazine or paint brochure. If it looks good in print it might look good in your house.

    – I personally don’t think you can go wrong with white woodwork against a strong colour. Personally I would stick with white woodwork OR the same colour as the walls as I’m not a fan of cream or differently coloured wood.

    – stick with matt or satin paint, brings the colour out more. I personally would never have silk paint – people say it reflects the light better but I think it looks naff.

    – dark paint in a dark room can work. Hard to pull off right but the results can be stunning:

    – feature walls – hmmmm. Not a fan as its a bit played out, i reckon its a modern trend for people who don’t take the time to pick the right colour and won’t commit to a whole room. It can work though, but it takes time to match the other walls to work well IMHO

    – lighting can make all the difference – in our lounge above we have a couple of standard lamps we use all the time rather than the ceiling light – looks so much better. Light bulb temperatures can make a colour look very different e.g. LED v trad bulbs

    – don’t listen to anyone else (huh?). Don’t go for what is trendy or what your mate has, you are living in the place and what you say goes. If you have ignored all the above but love it that’s great! Just bear in mind you might have to break out the magnolia before you come to sell up as you’re not selling it to yourself… 😉

Anyway, just my thoughts, good luck!

Hoisting a bike above my head isn’t always going to go 100%. Scratched car installing rack a couple of times despite being very careful – don’t want to leave it on all the time.

I now have a towball rack which is by far the best option but it is expensive, the only rack I’d never have again is a roof one.

I had a bit of heli tape where I attached my Thule boot rack so I knew where to locate it every time I installed it and to protect the paint a bit.

Don’t install it when those areas are filthy, that’ll accelerate wear, and also be careful when installing it. You don’t have to treat it like a baby child but I’ve seen people throwing them on then complaining about damage – well duh!

Never had damage with a boot rack.

I did with a roof rack!

There used to be a time when people fitted auxiliary driving lights to come on with the main beam but it doesn’t seem to happen much nowadays.

You shouldn’t have to upgrade the dipped beam, and really you shouldn’t, as you will blind anyone driving towards you. Main beams in most cars are a bit patchy I find so if you are using them a lot some extra driving lights may be a good idea.

John Lewis = as far as I can tell the recent issues with delivery are if you live outside the working radius of the JL own delivery trucks, they get delivered by another carrier if more than a certain distance from a store. I’ve had a couple of deliveries from them which have been amazing but I am close enough for proper JL drivers with shirts and ties!!
Ok their reputation suffers via the other delivery companies they use which they need to sort but if you are close to a store it might not affect you.

The burning of rubbish (in my case genuinely just good clean dry wood) I can honestly say from first hand experience Is not allowed by any business, especially so if a **** nimby lives near by.

So it’s ok to break the law if no one sees you?

I like the monster trucks but prefer the dual slalom type races as they take bigger risks to get round faster and they get some spectacular stunts and crashes.

The trophy trucks are just mental. Stupidly fast on pretty much any terrain this side of a rock crawler – they seem to do huge jumps at crazy angles but the suspension soaks it up and it somehow carries on. Axle articulation, travel length are just beyond belief.

Isn’t there one where a trophy truck does a MASSIVE wall ride? That’s a video I have to watch with my eyes covered!!

I was with you up until that point. New and/or nice cars are intrinsically nice things to have. They are nice to drive, nice to be in.

And there you can see where the marketing people have won…. 🙁

I’ve had 2 new cars (work provided). I’ve bought 4 2nd hand cars, most expensive was £3500. But becuase I bought wisely it actually felt like a new car (and cost nothing to own bar basic servicing) in exactly the same way as the new ones.

Daily Mail journalist Quentin Letts whose office overlooks the scene told the BBC of the moment police shot the man.

“This man had something in his hand, it looked like a stick of some sort and he was challenged by a couple of policemen in yellow jackets and one of the yellow-jacketed policemen fell down.

“We could see the man in black moving his arm in a way that suggested he was either stabbing or striking the yellow-jacketed policeman, and one of the policemen then ran to get help, which was very quick to come and as this attacker was running towards the entrance used by MPs to get into the House of Commons.

“As he was running he ran, about I’d say 15 yard perhaps, two plain clothes guys with guns shouted at him what sounded like a warning, he ignored it and they shot two or three times and he fell.”

Sounds like parliament/MPs/government was a target. And an unarmed policeman injured while trying to stop them. Well done sir, thanks for being there and doing your best and get well soon.

Hopefully good news will come about the pedestrians on the bridge but it sounds awful.

Haven’t watched vid yet but I will do. Shame he’s leaving.

Lots of people miss the point of WD. It isn’t about the profit at the end, it’s about showing you how to do things on cars so you can buy a cheaper one yourself and maintain it; or at least have enough knowledge to instruct a garage to do it for you if it’s beyond you.
Each “fix” would be shown and generally a cost given if you needed to have a garage do it.
The profit angle is really there to show you to keep an eye on costs and don’t spend more than it’s worth!!
I love the show as it gave me the confidence to fix my own cars and then go on to buy an older car I’ve always wanted and look after it.
Mike gave good advice on how to buy the cars and I love his passion for using local engineering places and local skilled craftsmen, plus buying 2nd hand bits rather than just buying new bits from a dealer. He probably has more knowledge and experience about the used car trade than everyone who views this site put together – his family are the same too.
They haven’t always got it 100% right but overall it’s entertaining and informative in equal measure and I hope it doesn’t change much. If Edd starts his own show on YouTube or similar it will be very popular.

I really think that Mary Berry can be forgiven on this one. Yes I know it’s a very serious crime and should be punished however her sterling community service in encouraging millions more people to bake tasty home made cakes, which I have benefitted from at home and in the workplace, must balance this out.

If the usual punishment of death is handed out then it may reduce, over time, the amount of free cake we get. I’m not prepared to take that risk.

    Forgiven!

I believe people look for vehicles that match one they’ve nicked and copy their plate, to avoid detection. You hear about people getting nicked for speeding at the other end of the country for example, to where they actually were at the time.

But you can find the reg of pretty much any similar car by standing next to a busy road for 5 mins or walking round a car park! If it’s a van just look into a screwfix car park or builders yard, if it’s an Audi you want then in an IT company car park. 😉

If your number is going to be cloned it’ll get done either way. Pretty rare anyway.

I find it really odd that people get all worried about showing their number plate in a picture when it’s a vehicle driven on the public road. Do you cover it up when driving? Weird.
