I don’t get the “purist” hifi stuff. Well into the 80’s amps had tone controls, sometimes graphic equalisers, and GE’s were popular as add ons to a system. Professionals use all sorts of EQ functions to get the sound right (as well as basic cables but that’s another argument) so I’m trying to find an amp with tone controls too.
It’s all about being happy with the sound. Boosting/reducing the bass or treble to suit you/your equipment/your room is perfectly ok, don’t let the “purists” tell you you need a straight through signal etc. It’s a great way of selling cut down amps to overpaid accountants but it shouldn’t be the way you have to listen to music.

They flexed up until they broke. I’ll take today’s bikes please

I bought this new in 1994. Has been ridden for 23 years and still as good as new. This is a recent pic after I had it repainted and restored.

A good friend of mine has had 2 carbon frames fail when he dropped them on their sides onto the floor and they hit a piece of wood. 😯

I’ll stick with my Kilauea thanks. 😀

I don’t think anyone takes pride in the tubing sticker on their frames so much nowadays.

I can’t believe you’d go through all this faff and expense rather than just put another switch in. 30min job and very low cost and you’ve got a perfectly reliable solution. The mind boggles.

If you’re not going to see the hole when it’s cut thankfully it doesn’t matter if it looks a bit crappy. If it was me I’d want it looking good anyway so I’d use a template and a straight cut router bit with an appropriate collet. Cut 5-8mm on each pass until you’re through. That’s how my joiner cut my 40mm oak worktop and it’s the most controlled and least risky way. It’s quite a small hole to use a jigsaw.

The parapets are ugly and pointless. Can’t see why you’d want them anyway.

It looked ok but a lot of the interior stuff was made out of chipboard. Bit naff really, only small knocks would make it look crap in fairly short order, doesn’t take much to knock through the wood veneer into the core.

The bricks looked like a 1970’s primary school as well.

Learning how to use a lathe would be better as they are more accessible to buy for home use and you can make lots of useful things with them.

I’d like a Brompton too but the prices are beyond ridiculous. I borrowed one for a bit and I couldn’t believe people spent so much money on one, heavy, slow, weird riding position etc. I was in fear of getting a rear puncture as you needed an engineering degree to get the back wheel out. It did fold up quite small but the quality of components on it was dire, I’d expect better on a £200 Carrera.

I’ve had thoughts about getting a BMX again instead too but they just aren’t small enough to fit in the boot of the car easily with my other stuff.

Might see if I can get to a Decathlon to check those cheap ones out.

I’d agree with a data breach. The figures they are using are correct but they probably publish them somewhere so it’s probably not a secret.

The good thing about my ground rent is that it is £2.50 a year and they can’t raise it as the amount is fixed cos it’s in the 107 year old leasehold document.

So I’m hoping when I’ve been there for 2 years buying the lease won’t cost much.

Something like this, wrapped around your ankle?

Thanks for that, found some “wheatybags” that are quite small via that link that are BOGOF and I think I can tuck them in my socks.

You’ve go to remember in all this that the decisions they make aren’t something they really get to think about. It’s all instinct in that sort of melee.

I’m normally one to knock SV but he was doing the same thing that other pole sitters do. I think the decision by the stewards was the right one. It’s not as if they do “mirror signal manoeuvre” like we do on public roads! I hate to defend SV but the speed that KR came up between them was something I’ve not seen very often in recent years, SV’s start wasn’t amazing but wasn’t dire so I think it’s reasonable for him not to expect KR to be there.

What I detest about SV is his absolute belief that he never does a thing wrong, despite all the evidence to the contrary. I still can’t believe what happened in Baku and I can agree with a previous poster that he should have been black flagged in that case and this might have calmed him down a bit.

It’s not a “statutory” nuisance as there’s no such thing

Wrong, so wrong. See Part III of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 please.

This sort of thing is my day job!

Importing waste into the yard (e.g. From their business or collecting it from other people) then burning it on a regular basis would be the remit of the EA as it’s an illegal waste management activity. You can register a waste exemption which allows you to burn wood but that’s only for trees and bushes you’ve felled/cut down from the land you are doing the burning on, not treated/painted wood.

If they are burning their own household waste it would be the council as you are allowed to burn your own waste as long as it’s not causing a statutory nuisance. It sounds like it is causing a statutory nuisance but it has to be witnessed by a council officer, normally an EHO.

I think people are confusing reliabilty with genuine crapness.

I think you’d struggle to say a Fiesta was the worst car in the world when millions of people bought them and they generally were reliable for them over billions of miles……

It should be a car that had no right to be on the road, that was particularly dangerous or badly thought out to such a degree that it was extremely difficult or challenging to drive.

There is an obvious special award, a unique place in design hell, reserved for the wonderful Ssangyong Rodius though….

I wonder what was going on in Lewis’ head after the first 10 seconds of that race, as everyone crashed to his left then Vettel spun off for no particular reason (as far as he knew at the time) right in front of him?

    “WTF just happened?” I’d guess

He was expecting to run a long and hard race to try and creep up the standings to avoid losing too much time but before he could blink he was in the lead with all his main rivals out of the race!

He really hates going slowly though, doesn’t he? When asked to peg his speed back to bunch up racers behind him “that doesn’t feel right, I want to go fast” …. “ok Lewis, err go for it then!”.

learning how to do some basics yourself can save a fortune in plumbing call out fees – e.g. leaky tap, swapping a rad, waste pipe connections etc. Its not difficult.

If you have a newish/up to code electrical system I fail to see how electrical systems need insurance….

Self insurance is something I’d not thought of but I’ve actually done without realising it when we cancelled out cat insurance and paid the monthly figure into a savings account instead….. saved loads then.

I went on a very off-road jaunt on my road bike once cos I fancied it. 23mm tyres, drop bars, calipers, 105 clipless pedals and proper road shoes. Actually wasn’t that bad, was kinda exciting in a “my face is going to meet those rocks” way (but good!).

I had a top quality Thule set up which clamped around the door frame on my Toyota Corolla and I ended up hating it. Looked ugly, was a real pain to set up properly (didn’t keep it on 24/7 as didn’t need it all the time) and whistled like crazy even though they were aero bars. Also flexed a LOT. Went to a top Thule boot rack in the end then a tow bar rack when I got a car with a tow bar.

Remember those “grenade” engines used for qualifying in the 1980s? Honda didn’t get the memo that these had been banned.

    From Wiki

By 1986, power figures were reaching unprecedented levels, with all engines reaching over 1,000 hp during qualifying with unrestricted turbo boost pressures; This was especially seen with the BMW engines of Benetton’s cars, reaching around 1,350 hp at a 5.5 bar boost pressure during qualifying. However, these engines & gearboxes were very unreliable because of the engine’s immense power, and would only last about four laps.

Honda wish they would last 4 laps…. 😆

Honda might be at capacity too.

    😆

Yeah, they are probably supplying more engines to Mclaren than they did in the 80’s turbo era, probably averaging 1 every 8 laps or something by now….

Just to check, it’s 1% plus progression awards, isn’t it?

Our progression awards have been scrapped a couple of years ago, so someone who comes into my job newly qualified gets paid the same as me, which is annoying as I spent years of hard graft to get to that level. Only way I can get paid more than the 1% is to apply for a new job a grade up.

I was judged as being exceptional last year and working way beyond my pay grade but I just get 1% pay rise same as everyone else, there is a hint I might get a small non pensionable bonus (not an addition to pay) but it’ll be fractions of a percent (probably less than £100 minus tax) and that’ll be only if other people are judged to not be performing as expected therefore don’t get their 1%. Overall pay increases across the 10,000 workforce have to average at 1%.

The Peaks are great in bad weather in general as its rocky and well drained. However there are some exceptions and one is Cut Gate path. Its basically a river bed in places in the middle of marshy land. Amazing when dry and one of the best descents in the UK going north IMHO but I wouldn’t touch it with a bargepole if its been raining a fair bit, it’ll be a soggy bog and very miserable to ride. Which would be shame but theres loads of other peaks trails that’ll be fine.

Those heel cushions look good, thanks.

I think he said I needed my heel angled a bit too. Bit rubbish feedback from him as I asked him to email his advice so I had a record of it to show my manager but he refused to do so, just scribbled a few words on the back of a leaflet and emailed the link to the insoles he recommended which seem crazy expensive and the description on the website is poor with no idea of specs or anything. Consulting room was grubby and battered, kit (and his PC) all damaged and broken. Ok its his expertise is what I need but I didn’t have much confidence in what he was saying to be honest, seemed very rushed.

I said I had insoles in when I had plantar fasciitis and use them in my shoes – I did say I’ve been wearing them for years with no problems but he seemed to think they were rubbish and weren’t helping (orthaheel sport insoles).

these are the ones he recommended: http://www.physioworldshop.co.uk/foot-care/orthotics/physioworld-full-length-custom-orthotic.html

@Newrobdog. That sounds awful. My issue is trivial really and just limits my sport, yours sounds quite debilitating. Hopefully your new physio will be better. Have you tried scouring the web? Often their are useful videos which may help.

Went to another physio yesterday paid for by work. He said I needed to get some £45 insoles (I use Orthoheel sport ones at the moment due to plantar fasciitis issues in the past), heat it up and do some stretching. I’ve got 4 sessions paid for where my Achilles will be worked on to help remove the lumps in it plus the muscle above which is all jacked up.

Left a bit despondent as I will struggle to afford £45 on some insoles (which I am not convinced will do anything – apparently I need to have my heel raised for some reason) and what he said was completely different from the other private physio I went to.

I think I’m the sort of person who would like rum. Tried Kraken cos it had a cool bottle but I think the spice bit I didn’t like. What would be an ok non spice rum for me to try?

BTW my wife would like to get a globe drinks cabinet so I need to expand my horizons…

and since the consumption of dairy products has been linked to asthma, constipation, recurrent ear infections, iron deficiency, anemia, and even cancer, dumping dairy is a healthy choice that everyone can make.

The people on retrobike.con who have polished frames now generally don’t have any fingertips left or sanity remaining to build the bike up again. If your frame is already a good finish it might be worth polishing but it’ll still be a nightmare of a job.

I’ve polished Shimano cranks and that was enough for me, chuffing nightmare. Problem is there are so many nooks and crannys you can’t use any polishing machine on.

I had some lowers off a pair of Marzocchi 1998 bead blasted, that gave a nice satin finish on the magnesium. I also had a early 90’s Rocky Mountain Experience where I redid its brushed finish with a Scotchbrite pad, that looked pretty cool and was easy to maintain.

    Cranks I polished:
