Peterpoddy to the forum – I know he’s worked in a few show, worked on hundreds (probably thousands now) of bikes from bog standard £150 efforts to multi thousand superbikes.

It might have satisfied the regs when it was installed but not the current regs. This doesn’t mean you have to bring it up to date, as long as it was ok when put in that’s fine. Which if you have the paperwork it should be.

I used to get this in my shop – SOGA is right and the shop should deal with it but I used to explain to people that if I dealt with it then all I would be doing is exactly what the customer would be doing, except with me doing it delays would occur as I’d have to ring the manufacturer when I had time, wait for the bits (which might not come while I was in), then try to get the customer on the phone to arrange pickup, customer would have to travel in to store etc etc. They would nearly always say fine thats ok with me and I would offer to sort out any issues if they came across any.

So basically, yes the retailer should sort it for you but if it saves time and hassle for everyone why not just do as they suggest? You get it sorted out direct to your house a lot faster. If anything goes wrong the retailer still has to sort it for you so you won’t have lost anything.

You can get all shouty and quote SOGA over the phone like some sort of consumer rights superhero but surely if something is better doing it another way why not do it? Forcing the retailer to do it just makes it worse for you!

Interesting thread this, i think will be getting carcassonne and really nasty horse racing game.

I played Carcassonne on my phone as I was thinking of buying it but I was put off by the phone experience. I have been told it is quite difference when playing the card game but it does depend on who you play it with – I have been warned that some of the expansions are completely pointless too, but some are worth getting and do add to the game a great deal.

Problem nowadays is that most cars can go very fast but with no perception of speed. Big fast modern saloons and performance cars are so “sorted” they enable you to do crazy speeds beyond most people’s skill level before they start to feel like they are fun or on the limit.

If you want to have fun on the roads get a Mk1 MX5 and don’t modify it, or an old mini or something RWD and lightweight. Get some training on a track to enable you to handle a car safely then go and find some roads where you can nimble along at safe speeds and have some fun. This doesn’t make you a road hooligan!

    Really, robdob? Quite a lot?!?

Yes. The way some people act in here I really wouldn’t want to meet them in person, I actively avoid threads which have certain people in them. As a Christian I regularly feel sick to my stomach the way people talk about people with beliefs. I would have something to offer in such discussions but it’s like a 1960’s sitcom and I’m the token immigrant so I don’t go near them.

The one person who I have met off this forum who I really liked was Hora, and after my long break I found out he wasn’t around any more and was quite sad. Considering a permanent break now as I think the forum has become worse as far as the “feeling” is on here.

There’s a lot of hatred on here but a lot of people don’t see it, the people who feel it just leave.

Frankly I’m still sick of the passive aggressive BS on here, if this was a pub most of the “big hitters” would have been barred or glassed long ago. A lot of people need to take a long hard look at themselves and ask if they really would treat people the way they do on here.

    This all the time.

To be honest not wanting the water on the top floor is a very weird thing. Just put normal rads in.

    newrobdob

Would very much depend on how much prep the floor needs first – might take a day or two to prep! Not worth skipping decent prep or your expensive floor could end up looking crap/creaking etc and you’d have to redo it. Depends on how complex the fit is too – doorways/alcoves all complicate things and add time on. I’d reckon the amount you want fitting would take at least 2/3 days to lay and a day or two to prep so maybe £600-£800 in labour as a bare minimum.

£40 psqm for the cheapest flooring plus other bits and bobs and it’s £3k minimum, but do you want the very cheapest flooring?

I’ve used Triple S myself as well as LSN but they are more expensive, less choice of colour and the finish isn’t quite as good (although better than some power coats I’ve heard about). Bloke I talked to there wasn’t very nice either.

I drive a 2 hr round trip to LSN and I don’t mind as it’s so good.

Do you not drive an old volvo estate?

I wasn’t aware that was what hipsters drove? Don’t they all go around on fixies?

Mind you there are a lot of beards in the old Volvo community, but mainly Swedish “our chins will fall off from the cold otherwise” type beards

LSN in castleford do a perfect job, all threads masked and coating so good it looks like paint for £40 frame and forks, all colours/gloss/metallic etc.

    £200? Nope!

Hmm. Customer service can be good when your prices are a piss take. £100 for a bin that’s annoying to open? Give over.

Used to sell all sorts of bins in the DIY shop I managed, never got Brabantia back faulty. They were never much more to buy than the equivalent own brand ones we had but were much better quality.

A lot of the replacement batteries you can buy online aren’t new at all, they are from iPhones broken up for parts. So you might get a newish battery or one which is no better. The non Apple ones can be a bit of a lottery too. Do the battery check thing with Apple first to check it then take it from there. I’d backup the phone to iTunes and do a factory reset then install the backup – that often worked well with older phones to get rid of any issues on the phone – like a clean install on a PC.

The problem you describe sounds very much like a completely knackered battery though.

I’ve been following that car for a while and it’s a great car but now only really good for the track now, would be painful to drive on the road for any distance as it’s so drift focussed now. Nice engine in it but I’d have preferred to stick with the redblock Volvo engine myself and kept an interior in it for a sleeper effect!

    Get it out now.

Whatever you do don’t saw the chuffing thing down to get it out. I’ve seen this so many times on older bikes and it makes it mucg harder to remove the post.

After using some penetrating oil (not WD40 It’s hopeless) use the saddle as leverage – clamp it in a vice (use another sacrifical saddle if needed) and twist the frame. If the post has a head on it which can be clamped that might work as well. Bear in mind that even pressure when turning the frame to release the post might not work – it needs a sudden jolt to break the corrosion apart. A dead blow hammer hitting a block of wood on the head tube can work well. You might have to give it some real welly too – don’t be afraid! The CRACK when it releases is both scary and satisfying at the same time.

Use copper slip next time on the post if it isn’t going to be moving much. Plenty of it! And maybe seal the area around the clamp too with an inner tube to stop water getting it but make sure water isn’t being trapped in there.

Sometimes, if not a bad dent, a bang from the inside of the panel (or a sucker from outside) can work wonders.

+1 – maybe enlist the services of a PDR (paintless dent removal) person who will probably get it out for a lot cheaper than £800.

I know some people don’t mind things dented (I do) but this is a 600 mile car so it would seem a shame to leave it!

Anyway big dents on a roof are bad as water sits in them and rust car start very easily, especially if the paint is damaged.

Question – if I bought one of your bikes and 6 months later it failed (cracked or whatever) through no fault of my own what would response be?

    newrobdob

I had one of the earlier (8 years ago?) as a pre-lease car at work and was disappointed when the bloke who delivered it told me what he’d brought me. 4 weeks later I didn’t want to give it back and the Astra that replaced it wasn’t as nicely made, had less kit and was nowhere near as practical inside. I won’t be disappointed next time if I get one!

Mull is flipping amazing. We can’t wait to go back. Everywhere there is quiet and relaxing, even in the centre of the main town there. Great for walking/beaches/cycling for all abilities. Can’t wait to go back.

My wife and I booked a cottage 3 weeks before we went in September, got a big amount of money off because it was last minute. Might not be as easy in school hols but book now and you should be ok.

Tip – don’t get the ferry from Oban , drive all the way round to another ferry at Lochaline – you have to book a ferry at Oban which means you have to be on the clock all the way up there so you don’t miss it. No booking on the ferry at Lochaline and you can have a lovely drive there through Glen Coe and around to th peninsula via another little ferry – it makes the journey interesting as well as the destination.

The only recommendation I’d have for where to stay is stick to the north end of the island, there’s a bit more to do at the north end – you might go to Iona one day but I wouldn’t stay near there as there is less at that end and it takes a LONG time to drive across the island! There’s lots of circular cycle route options for all abilities on the northern end too.

To show you how beautiful and dramatic Mull can be, we went on a bike ride and ride round a headland to see a view of a bay – my wife and I have seen amazing sights around the world (Grand Canyon, NYC, all over Britain) but this is the only time she openly wept at the beauty we saw that day on Mull.

Unfortunately built under doubles have to use as much of the available space as they have available and induction hobs are quite deep. I reckon if you got 10mm clearance you’d be ok anyway, maybe even a touch less.

Not necessarily advocating them to purchase from, but I found AO.com useful as they seem to have dimensions including clearances needed on most if not all of the products they sell. Might be useful.

Might be a joint investigation with the Met leading it? They’ll probably need assistance from Mann other agencies but they might be coordinating it.

    newrobdob

I prosecuted a simple case in my job, I was the only investigator and it involved a few site visits and case file preparation and my costs of £5000 ish were awarded to me. Conducting a proper investigation using PACE to ensure someone can be found guilty beyond reasonable doubt is a very exacting thing to do, and the time involved mounts up very quickly and is therefore very expensive. If you don’t do it properly and cut corners you’ll just lose in the court as you won’t have followed proper procedure to ensure the case is fair for the defendant.

You can’t have it both way, it’s either done properly and fairly and is costly or you could do a cheap job and it goes nowhere are no-one is found guilty. In my case just doing the disclosure schedules took a few hours, for a big case it can takes many people months to do it.

Not a central area for all the flats no, ours had a TV and some chairs IIRC.

You won’t be in the flat very much though, trust me. When my wife and I go on hols we do like to spend some time relaxing in front of the TV in the place we are staying but that did not happen at all in NYC.

    Define “better”

If you want to just get started as easily as possible, you can read less than half of Sheldon’s page and crack on. It’s what I did, and it’s served me well over the years.

I’ve no doubt Roger’s book has more information in it and is “better”. It’s just that unless you’re building for relatively exceptional demands, you’ll almost certainly only need to know the core stuff; you can pick up the finer details much later, or by experience alone, if you ever find the need.

So you needn’t feel it’s “better” to digest an entire book in order to build a decent wheel.

Its not really a book though, its a guide on how to build wheels with all the info you need. It doesn’t go into massive detail on every issue, but it does explain why you do things as well as how you do them. I’ve built wheels using it which have turned out very good indeed. For £3 its a bargain

We did look at Brooklyn but just thought that using the subway to get anywhere would be a pain all the time. We would like to be able to walk around mainly.

Don’t do it – bear in mind Manhattan is HUGE. From the bottom of Central park to the 9/11 museum is 4.5 miles in a straight line. Get a subway pass for the week ($32 a week each (might have been for both of us) IIRC) and use them for the big hauls across the city.

    newrobdob

I went to NYC for a week – you are never going to be in a place where you can walk everywhere. I’d agree that staying in midtown is daft, its not a nice place to be IMHO but people think because it near some of the big name places you have to stay there.

We stayed here when we went: http://www.bblodges.com/. They are basically small flats with a kitchenette – ours had a balcony but we didn’t use it as in June its very stuffy outside and by the time we got home in the evening we just wanted the air-con goodness!

The price seems to be very low for manhattan (£1k for the week) but we thought it was a fantastic place to stay for the week. Its in Spanish harlem which is just up from Upper East side – its basically a residential area and was quite nice I thought. All sorts of people live there. It was 1 block from the subway which was very handy – the subway stations are not as close together as London so it pays to be near one. There was a few shops and places to eat nearby (Barking Dog we used for breakfast a couple of times which was ace).Close to Central park/museum mile which was really nice.

Make sure you plan your week, make a list of places you want to go to and make a rough plan for each day. Don’t try to do too much in a day or you will be burnt out very quickly. What we did was get a subway to a certain area each day and walk around the area visiting the places we wanted to and maybe end up in another area to get the subway back home. A few times we ended up walking from or to the flat anyway as we could go through central park or Upper east side on the way home.

Bear in mind it can take a while to get somewhere in Manhattan even on the tube so walking everywhere isn’t a sustainable option every day!

    £150? Cant go wrong mate.

With the extremely variable quality of On-one/Planet X frame I reckon you can go very wrong.

I’d buy a decent second hand frame instead, I’ll never buy anything from On-one now.

I reckon most peoples issues with extractor fans are from poor ducting. When I used to sell kitchens I’d see builders make complex ducting runs so they could get a hob and extractor in the best place to “look good”. Long runs with bends and diameter reductions increase back pressure and can make a decent extractor perform very poorly.
My new extractor fan will be going in soon – I could have made my life easier by using more ducting but opted instead to core drill through 1m of brick and stone to get the ducting straight out behind the extractor.
