It's a good arguement for BAA not being allowed to own so many airports I think.
If that was the case then a dispute like this couldn't cause such widespread disruption.
Break the Spanish giant's (BAA's) grip on UK airports!

Go skiing instead – it's easier to become good at, easier to ride lifts and more versatile if you fancy getting into more exciting adventures such as ski touring.

Do you mean freewheel rather than freehub?
I have the Surly one, which seems quite good. Cartridge bearings can easily be replaced.

Did it on a rigid singlespeed last year, which was very comfortable. Most of the fireroad is pretty smooth, and there isn't all that much that isn't fireroad.

Mr Shand charged 95 euros for the join. Got the belt drive kit from him too. (Although he's in Scotland he prices these conversions in Euros because he has to pay for the components in Euros)
As Epicyclo says you can do it in a more diy fashion by sawing through the dropout and bolting a plate on. I didn't fancy this, so went with the seatstay join.

    To those who ask why…
    I don't know yet!
By next spring I might know. A winter of grit, muck and filth will either wreck the belt and pulleys or have little impact. If it's the latter then I will be happy and will probably convert my other singlespeed. If it's the former I'll go back to chains and write the project off as an interesting but expensive experiment.
Weight wise the pulleys are probably about the same or slightly ligher than an aluminium chainring and a steel sprocket. The belt is much ligher than a chain.
According to the manufacturer the belts don't stretch at all. I imagine that when it's worn out the belt may start to 'ratchet' or jump teeth. Should certainly never snap unless it's mistreated.
It is noticably quieter than a chain and I do really like not having grease on my calves, clothes, car and carpets.
Changing tyres/tubes is no different to on any other singlespeed with horizontal dropouts and a chain tug.

I'll update when it wears out!
The guy who broke Mark Beaumont's round the world record apparently did it on a bike with one of these belts and a Rohloff. Changed the belt once in 18,000 miles.
Don't think I'll get 9,000 miles out of mine when using it in Scottish mud, but I'm hoping it will last a while.

Used to break lots of chains, but learned how to use the Shimano replacement pins properly, and haven't had one break for years!

Haven't been there for a couple of years due to moving further away. Used to provide me with a bit of entertainment on the way off the hill.
Go have a look and see what you reckon.

Live in Scotland, and pretty much ride where I feel is suitable.
Have been 'told off' a few times, but tend to just say a cheery hello and keep riding.
Don't have time to educate everyone I meet on the trails, and almost all of them wouldn't listen anyway.

Anyone else got the November 1997 edition of Mountain Bike World? (Ancestor of Singletrack).
It has a 100 things to do before you die feature. Some good ones in there.
Some might be quite hard to arrange: "Go drinking with Rob Warner and/or Steve Peat".

I've got Tech x2 brakes on my bike. Been working well since I got them in March. Using the Hope pads, as some of the alternatives don't come with the pad springs. These seem to work well, although if you're riding in properly soaking gritty conditions you'll only get a few rides out of any set of pads.

There were some wee flakes of ice coming from the sky here in Edinburgh at about 5, but then the rain came on hard! It'll be snowing on the hills up north though!
Could just see some snow on top of the Moorfoots on my dawn ride in the Pentlands this morning as well as a dusting on Scald Law and East Cairn Hill.

    I do.
I think everyone taller than 5'10" should give one a try. I went back to my 26" wheeled bike last week after 6 months on the 29er and it just felt so wrong!
Can't find any disadvantages when I'm on it, but find bigger wheels make it a bit harder to carry and fit in the car boot.

letmetalktomark – yes Mr Shand (he's a one man band) does have an excellent reputation for his framebuilding. http://www.shandcycles.com I'm really happy with mine.

Had a look at those two basspine. Searched for a few tunes and they didn't seem to have them. Are they quite selective?
What websites have a huge selection and are good value?

Is itunes really that good or do people just use it out of habit because it was one of the first? Tried to have a look round it but the site was loading pages incredibly slowly so I gave up.

How do manufacturers get away with calling things "Water resistant" when all they really mean is that electrical contacts are not completely open to the elements and not that they have any kind of sealing?

    NewRetroTom
    Full Member

It seems that the Knog lights are most certainly not water resistant.
I think I'm going to go ahead and try sealing mine with some sealant and see if that works.

Sounds like it could be worth trying out one of these Blackburn Mars lights then. Looks like it could be a bit of a hassle moving it from one bike to another though.

One thing I did think about doing was putting some rubber glue (sole seal) between the rubber and the plastic on the Knog round all the openings. Would need to re-glue every time I changed the batteries though.

I went for a walk in the hills above Kabul in March this year. Looked like there was definite potential for sweet trails.
Pity about the landmines though. A bit worse to ride over than dog turds.

Made in round in just over 10.5 hours. Sore hands, back and legs.
Great event, really well done to all those who organised it.
Might be back next year, but I don't think I'll try it on a rigid singlespeed again!
