That’s incredibly quick! Not just shaving a few minutes off, but 1 day 10 hours! And he’s a rookie on the course!

Will it count for “official” purposes? By the sounds of it there was a film crew following him.

To a greater extent every year I think the “official” view is becoming increasingly irrelevant. As long as people are open and honest about what interactions they had and were expecting with their crew, and as long as they didn’t break the basic rules of receiving any physical support we can all judge for ourselves whether we think it should count.

Another here who doesn’t bother with vulcanising solution. Not necessary and tends to make the anchovy too slippery, so it slides back out.

What would the sentence be for killing a cyclist by drunk driving while speeding if you then phoned the ambulance/police straight away?

What they did afterwards made it 100x worse, so if the answer to the above is “2 years” then they should have got 200 years.

I was thinking about that this morning as I dug out an old bike I haven’t ridden for a couple of years and found my abs lacking in strength. Climbing out of the saddle is something I virtually never do on my full sus bikes as it’s less efficient/doesn’t give you as much grip/there’s no need.
Fully rigid singlespeed for the full body work out! Modern bikes are making us soft.

I found an article which says

“Two 100m conveyor belt uplifts will take riders to the top of the lower zone, where they can easily access the green and lower blue routes.
A purpose-built climb trail will take the more experienced riders to the top of the upper blue and red trails.”

So the uplift is basically two magic carpets for beginner skiers that they are allowing bikes on.

I can’t imagine there will be any issue with the tiny number of people who might be descending on a bike via coire Cas joining the upper blue and red trails on their way through.

Had a quick look at the France – Algeria double tax treaty. Pensions are taxable in the country where you’re resident, not the one where they are paid.

The exception is if it’s a pension for government service. In which case the opposite is true.

Who did your FIL work for OP?

We have the Decathlon Elops R500 linked above. We’re France based, so it was €2,900 here which seems like a pretty good deal.

Have had it since March and have done almost 1,000 km on it so far. Love it.

If you go too fast it does go a bit weird – battery indicator suddenly jumps back up to 100%. I have tried to keep it under 45km/h but have inevitably drifted over that a few times…

No kids a deliberate decision taken 40 years ago and a part of the reason is even then I understood overpopulation was a major issue in the longevity of the human race.

How many kids have you adopted/fostered? If the answer to this is zero I don’t believe you. You didn’t have kids because you didn’t want to have kids – nothing to do with environmental concerns.

BBC.com is beating STW on my phone – 693mb vs 686mb. Must try harder STW!

Also have some random stuff like aliexpress and argos which I haven’t visited for months, but have over 100mb of storage.

Presumably if they get to the surface they would be able to use a satellite phone and handheld GPS given that they’re inside a carbon tube (not metal)?

Sounds like you are needing to carry a bit more supply with you…doesn’t sound like a one-off either, so might need a change to force a new habit.

(Sorry for sounding like a grumpy parent, but I do tend to get laughed at with the snacks I carry, but they inevitably are needed by the ones who tend to forget to bring stuff)

I think we encountered @DickBarton when my mate bonked on the Isle of Skye. We were camping at Sligachan and had done the Glen Sligachan round with a “short-cut” across the island from Loch Slapin to Luib. This had involved serious bog-wading and an average speed of about 1km/h and our last chocolate had been consumed long before we got to Luib.

Dave announced he couldn’t go any further. I told him to HTFU as it was only a few mostly flat km’s round the coast back to Slig. He said no way and went and knocked the door of the most lived-in looking property. The guy produced a packet of custard creams, but then held out his hand for payment.
“er, sorry we haven’t got any cash”
“you’d best put that down to experience then lads!”

Just ride it. Once you’ve done a few hours of riding and the drivetrain is worn in it will cease to be a problem.

GPS is clearly very bad at recording top speed accurately. If I sort my activities by max speed on Veloviewer I have 11 which have over 100km/h top speed which is clearly nonsense (one of them was a walk!).
All the activities which I have looked at that have top speeds in the 80’s (there are loads) it seems to be just a momentary spike, so not a real top speed either.
I remember doing 50mph down the Coal Road (Dent to Garsdale) as recorded by my Cateye Cordless II back in about 1999 which felt pretty quick on a knobby tyred hardtail!

Troll – used to be someone who started/contributed a thread on an internet forum in a “devil’s advocate” style to generate debate/flush out people who held outrageous prejudices.

Now – someone who sends vile abuse on twitter.

    This is good advice:

go back to your GP if no update within a few weeks. Sooner if your symptoms are getting worse or you notice any new ones.

Sister in law died from a brain tumour in 2020. The first symptoms were with her hearing, but it wasn’t realised what was causing them until much later.

Aeroplane fuel tanks – quite big really.
Boeing 747-8 holds nearly a quarter of a million litres!
So that’s enough to fill up the 50 litre tank on my car 5,000 times. I can do 500 miles on a tank, so that would be enough to drive 2,500,000 miles.

Private Eye have been going on about these transactions for months. I thought they sounded like fairly normal political shenannigans, albeit quite messy.

Slightly surprised that what has allegedly gone on must amount to criminal activity given that he’s now been arrested.

My Decathlon R500 e-cargo hub motor apparently generates power above 45km/h. But I don’t think the system is really set up to deal with it and recharge the battery, so they simply advise you to never go above 45km/h. I think if you did it when the battery was already full it would kill the electrics.

Sounds like you need to get yourself wired into the media a bit better.

If you read the article it gives you not only an explanation of what it is, but also a history of OnlyFans.

A heli rescue was in the £20k’s when I was last out there

This is a common misconception. Heli rescue is free if you need it. There have been cases where folks have been billed for the ride down, but this has been where they basically decided they couldn’t be arsed walking off – no injuries, no weather coming in, they just didn’t fancy a cold, dark night shivering on the mountain and then hiking out in the morning.

Currently 44% (it’s snowing outside) but have seen it as low as 20% when it’s been dry frosty weather. Quite a bit higher than that in summer.

My old maths teacher used to say “the mind is like a garden – it needs to be tended to keep it under control”.
I think he was correct – the people who come across as inteligent are often the ones who not only started out with a decent brain, but have trained it and exercised it in ways that cause it to function effectively.
Conversely it’s possible to start out with a decent brain and end up a dullard due to lack of stimulation.

At an office I used to work in one of the staff murdered a colleague, then bundled her body into his car in the garage where I used to keep my bike. Pretty grim to think about.

Hmm interesting – the one I have handled is definitely ceramic, but it was a Hermes one rather than COCO Chanel.

Either way what a stupid thing.

I have 3 touring setups (well, 4 if you count the telemarks).

My heaviest setup consists of Lange XT Free 130 boots, Dynafit ST rotation bindings and Line Sir Francis Bacon (108 underfoot). I think it’s awesome as an all-round ski setup for someone who spends most of their time off piste. It probably gets used 80% of the time for lift-accessed skiing, but does get used for touring when conditions are right such as this https://www.strava.com/activities/6347376768

The only real downside is when you’re using lifts where you have to take the skis off and put them back on again as it does take a bit longer to get the bindings to engage, even when you’re used to it. If it’s all chairlifts then no problem!

Partly just the UK’s erratic maritime climate isn’t it? Not at all uncommon for Scottish temperatures to be higher on 21 December than 21 June. They just don’t really fit into your expectations of seasons.
Trend for the UK though is warmer and wetter – as I remember being told the future looked like back at school in the early 1990’s when I was first taught about the greenhouse effect. So no surprises.

Something my mum has been battling for years I think. My dad tries to make her keep it under control, but there are still 10 year old newspapers floating about the house/shed.
I think she inherited it from my grandmother. It took my mum and my auntie 2 years to clear out the house after she died, and a lot of the junk got brought back to my parents’ house.
I fear that if my dad dies first my mum will lose all control of the situation and things will start to accumulate very rapidly.
