I’m curious about the local authority data. Mainly what Cumbria is like – one of the papers had the county as having highest infection rate outside London.

    https://covid19cct.shinyapps.io/covid19cct/

Dividing the number of confirmed cases by the population of Cumbria suggests Cumbria is having a tough time vs the rest of the UK.

What I think needs to happen in the UK at this junction is for the UK government to be firmer with their communication to the public.

Communicating information to a large number of people is incredibly hard, and they have done a fantastic job. They have kept the message simple, and kept repeating it. However, I think they need to go a little further to force the R0 below 1. ( Only China have achieved this so far )

    Message so far:

    Stay at Home
    Protect the NHS
    Save Lives

Fantastic message. Simple and Effective, but I fear not enough to beat this virus.

    Changes and reasons:

    1. Limit the number of supermarket visits per household to one per week. We need food, but need to avoid contact with people outside the household as much as possible. One trip per week would reduce the number of people we come into contact with in a week. ( one person per household at each shop is not enough )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxAaO2rsdIs ( Stamford university graduate, logical modelling in my opinion )

(Taxi drivers being personal shoppers would help for the population who are at higher risk, but communicated locally as government need to keep message simple )

    2. Update the general guidance on social distancing. The science points to 4-6m from a cough, and 7-8m with sneezing. No need to communicate the science, but tweak message to be we need to do all we can to keep the maximum distance possible when close to one another.

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2763852 ( Professor from MIT so trusted )

    3. Get everyone to cover their mouths when they leave their house. The R0 in countries that have a lot of the population wearing masks is lower; fact.

( Impossible for UK government to say we should all wear a mask when going out as there are not enough masks for the NHS staff. The press would ask very challenging questions if the government say cover mouths, but don’t wear a mask. Government need to appear to be in control and keep us calm; so a rock and a hard place spring to mind. However, they need to take the bold step, and say it. USA doing it by Trump being ambivalent and his wife saying it; which is a softer method, but still heard by majority of population, and the closest person to the president as possible ) A lot of thought needs to go into how they communicate the message in the UK, but it must be done.

My take on the firmer message:

Leave the home for a grocery shop once a week ( point 1 )
Protect the NHS by covering your mouth when you leave the house ( point 3 )
Save lives by following the above ( could be improved )

( point 2 is covered by the action from point 3 )

Step 1 – Ask her to ask for the refund through paypal not ebay. This is important.
Step 2- You explain to paypal that it was working when you sent it, and is now not working. Appears that it was damaged in delivery by the ebay Global Shipping Programme
Step 3 – paypal will refund the buyer, you keep your money from the sale, and ebay GSP will pick up the cost. They are liable for delivering the item in working condition.

This approach gets it resolved in around 24 hours.

If she asks for the refund through ebay this approach will not work, it must be through paypal.

I have had this happen to me twice, and got it resolved both times. I have now stopped using ebay GSP as I find they damage items.

Patagonia R1 full zip is my favourite mid layer.

I would get a jacket made of Dermizax NX. Far more breathable which is the key to a good shell. It will stop you overheating.

If you insist on goretex, I suggest a norrona lofoten jacket. It is a great design that offsets some of the weaknesses of goretex.

This is the old wording. Snap shot from 13th June 2017

You can take ski and snowboarding equipment of up to 190cm (75in) in length in your checked baggage, provided it is packed correctly:

Only use a recognised ski or snowboard bag for your equipment.
Pack your ski poles with your skis.
Pack your boots separately from your skis or snowboard.

If you’re travelling on a hand baggage only (Basic) fare or if your checked baggage allowance includes one bag only, you will need to pay extra to take your ski equipment.

IMPORTANT – BA CHANGES RULES ON SKI CARRIAGE

    https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/baggage-essentials/sporting-goods-and-musical-instruments

You can take your skis or snowboard as checked baggage, provided they are packed correctly and within your baggage allowance:

Only use a recognised ski or snowboard bag for your skis or snowboard – this can be up to 190cm in length
Pack your ski poles with your skis in the same bag – this will count as one item of baggage
Your ski or snowboard boots must be packed separately from your skis or snowboard – this will count as a separate item of baggage.

If you’re travelling with your skis/snowboard in a bag and your ski/snowboard boot-bag as well as your free checked baggage allowance, you will be charged for two extra bags.

If you’re travelling on a hand baggage only (Basic) fare you will need to pay extra to take any additional bags, including those with your skis, snowboard or boots.

For safety reasons you are not allowed to board the aircraft wearing your ski or snowboard boots

Does not answer the question, but I suggest excess insurance to avoid a repeat. Much cheaper than what is offered by the hire companies.

Went with Silver, helped keep the costs down 🙂

Prices for peoples reference – all parts bought on ebay:

    650b 38mm Rims – £315 including postage and duty – 880 grams

    DT Swiss 350 Hubs – £92 – 136 grams + 272 grams

    Spokes – £20 – 382 grams

    Nipples – TBC – 20 to 55 grams

    Build – £40

Total will £467 + a few quid, so good value. Not sure what the final weight will be, but around 1,690 to 1,725 grams is the expectation. Just need to decide whether to go for aluminum or brass DT Pro Lock nipples.

Found silver on ebay for under £20 for all the spokes I need, so about £50 cheaper than anywhere online in black.

Slightly embarrasing question to be asking, but would silver spokes look ok with matt carbon rims and dark grey hubs?

I am getting my LBS to build them for me so I got the ERD measured by them ( Both 1mm out Vs what LB states on the web site) , and they advised on the spoke lengths I needed. I checked on the DT Swiss website and they came out with the same as the shop when I entered the ERD. The LBS do not have the lengths in stock so said it would likely be cheaper for me to source them. The DT website states I need:

    265.60mm
    267.00mm
    266.60mm
    265.30mm

If I get them all at 266mm I might be ok for most of them as they are within 0.75mm. The risk is the 267mm spokes.

Pair of pliers on the outside of the bolt.

If you have cable cutters they will work as well, again gripping the outside of the bolt. Go straight on as if you are going to cut the bolt in half until they have “cut” a bit into the bolt and undo.
