depends on your type of riding riding, i had the 2 step airs and the 2 step failed, sent them back and had the coil internals fitted as the 2 step internals were not in stock.

The difference is significant in a number of ways. The suspension action is greatly improved on the coils, but when climbing or moving around on the bike they wallow around a lot, I've had to play with the motion control damping to stop this and its more or less worked. Then there's the weight which is quite a bit more. depends what you want. 😉

I've got to say i've had mine on for two years, covered thousands of miles with only minor stuff going wrong (the wheel craddle things has just broke but was only £3!).

I wouldn't have thought there should be any problems, check for obvious signs of wear and tear. Mind you, if you've had them five years like mine they've more than paid for themseleves! 😆

Thats right, there's the Hart to Haswell railway line (about 18 miles) which is alright but gets boring very quickly.

There are however some trails up around whats called the Summerhill Sports Centre on Catcote Road. There's a really good bmx track there and some alright (all be it short) xc trails.

Best bet is a drive to Great Ayton or Hamsterly though

my 240's seem to require more than average amounts of bearing changes, although mine is a 12mm one, maybe thats why

I don't think there's any point reminding the chap about the fact he left his/wives bike unattended, its more to do with the fact of what can be done to minimise thefts from Llandegla (or any area that we enjoy riding in).

Sorry for your loss though pal, what goes around comes around though, they'll get there's one day!

its a difficult thing as i would feel guilty going somewhere to try a bike that i had no intention of buying from. I'm in a similar situation myself at the moment. I want to try a Lapierre for size but i'm not going to get it from local to me. Money is money

I'm running blackburn flea's, seem good so far and they're really bright. decent back up light for offroad nightrides (obviously not to ride fast offraod but will get you home) had mine three months and still fine, thats three times a week commuting (2hrs per day)

yeah i was looking at the mondraker foxy, looks nice but as you say, unproven

I'm looking at getting the 914, which leaves a lot of choice at the price point i know but i like that bike. I have a carbon scott ransom atm and want something with less travel and a lot lighter, sub 26lbs really.

I'm going to test ride a few but as far as sbc are concerned i don't know whether i like the idea of the 'brain' as i've tried previous versions and they just felt heavily damped?

Other option was the fuel ex, but this is going to be my only mtb so i wanted something around the 140mm mark to go well in the alps and at home.

3 days a week commmuting (75 miles), rest sat and ride 2/3 hours on a sunday, about the most i'm capable of at the minute 😉

Any tire on a hard/wet and mostly polished surface is going to slip, let alone icy as it was on sunday

were fine even in ice and snow, even on semi slick CX tyres!

watch out for the boardwalk sections and wooden berms cos they are slippy

= MASSIVE UNDERSTATEMENT! just avoid all together if its really wet or even worse, icy. Why they haven't rubber coated or put some other form of 'grippy stuff' on is beyond me.

It gets knocked a lot but i think its a decent route. Its also useful to use as a base to explore trails leading off it as there are some beauty's!

seems to have provoked quite a reaction this?! For the record i just can't see how its a good idea.

The difference is 10% and its on one of the top end Lapierre's so its a significant amount. I really want to go with the local shop but its cold hard cash

Its a competitive market out there and i wasn't aware that staff in cycle shops pick and choose who they want to sell too? certainly didn't when i ran cycle shops. Who knows if that person asking for a £40 SRAM cassette is also thinking about a 5k road bike? Then sacking him off for a the bloke in front of you surely is bollox?

The point being that providing good quality customer service is not a selective process 🙄

i fancy a go at that like. the riding round there is good so would be worth the trip up. BBQ on the sat night sounds alright too!

don't know what happened with the double post?

I waited 4 days, and as i needed the part for the weekend, a point i made upon enquiry i think that long enough. With the place thats supplied the part, rang one day, delivered a day later, thats how its meant to work!

None of this "I'll ring you back" s**t!

    Another shop off the list!

i went with them last year and had no problems at all? food was total s**t but aprt from that it was fine. I booked early last year and me and my 4 mates got it for £200 for a week fully catered, now you can't beat that really?

having said that i'm not going with them this year as we're hiring a chalet ourselves. costing more but we're going with the other halves so they are more bothered about the place we're staying. for a group of mates going away, having a beer and riding your bike, i'd recomend them.

Jo – we were thinking of a Grizedale route but to be honest but we're pretty easy. Get my email from my profile or get my contact details of chucky and we'll sort something out for sure. Sounds good though.

I've been riding quite a while and i think that tecnically i can hold my own. I've been to Morzine a couple of times and wanted to try somewhere different thats all. i think that the xc trails around morzine are way too tame which why i was looking at chamonix. Not really up for poundinng the DH tracks like i used too, just can't take those HUGE braking bumps anymore ha ha

Plus i'm taking the other half so there's more for her to do while i'm riding.

I've got a mate out there now and he says that the illegal thing isn't an issue, but i have to say it is playing on my mind?????

might try changing the pads as clubber says, they slow down ok but don't stop well, and the squeeking does my nut in 🙄

    I'll persist with set up

i'm off an age that remembers cantis well, in fact i think i looked a little through rose tinted glasses when i looked at them before i bought the bike! gues i'm just too used to my disc brakes on my mtb! 🙄

    neil853

yeah i thought the set up was criticle, but i've had huge problems with squeeling, which after repeated atempts to cure i'm sure does comes and goes as it feels. toe'd in, not toe'd in doesn't seem to make much difference.

Any products to look out for?

trickydisco – if needs be, decent tyres, decent sized brakes (185mm will be fine but the rear too as you'll be dragging that a lot) and apart from that you could be away.

but like chakaping says, a 150mm travel bike would be better if possible

not stopped riding at all. after all, it was only a bit of snow.

well i have to disagree with that, we've had considerable amounts of snow that have laid on top of ice. 13 mile commute down a relatively busy road not a good idea 🙄

i bought some '09 4 pot saints for exactly the same requirements you've got. if your not bothered about weight (compared to less extreme brakes) then you will not be dissappointed! truely spectacular brakes.

It depends on what you are going to do while your there and the reson for going. I've been a couple of times. The first was with a DH bike and was fun but a bit repetitive. Pounding the pleney and the les gets wc tracks just gets boring, and when it rains, jesus! 😯

Last year when i went, i went with a load of trail riders, bought a route book (although the les gets tourist board map is excellent!) and did a load of xc routes. It was really good fun. It was all lift assited and we were able to cover imense distances! On the rest days we could just do some DH that was near by.

As for your bike it would be able to do it, but you would be limited to green or possibly blue routes, much more than that and you would struggle, depends on what type of rider you are and what you are capable of? If you are looking for a new bike anyway then consider something with more travel than yours, i've read that the new 140mm travel FSR's are meant to be very good as are the Scott Genius (150mm) and can be extremely light that help maintain the 'quick' feeling.

A good piece of advice i had off someone on here made a lot of sense, in that all your doing out there is riding just as you do here, the hills are just bigger! If you see something you don't want to do, do the same as you would here and either look at it a few times and don't do it, or think **** it and go for it, either way its still the same 😆
