Boardman CX pro. Had it about a year commuting 25 miles a day 3-4 days a week. Held up fine. Haven’t riden it much off road but when i have it seemed good.

it is quite technical for a nightride and a headtorch is definately needed (which i don’t have) but the roller coaster section is awesome in the dark!

That area gets LOADS of rain but as you says holds up well. It’s had some repair work done recently and is riding really well.

I might ride it tomorrow actually ;)

strike gloves are rubbish, I’m on my second pair in 18 months. Had some superlight waterproof shorts rip within two rides but apart from that all the products have been spot in. All the merino gear is brilliant! I wear their lycra shorts and tights and they’ve all been fine. Their customer service has been excellent too, just stay away from those gloves :)

i would use mojo for fox stuff, had some advice from them that backfired on my lyrics and they assumed zero responsibility for it wouldn’t use them again. As someone has said the loco tuning bloke seems to know what he’s talking about.

you work in F1 and you’re thinking of getting a job in the bike industry? Listen some of my happiest years were spent working in a bike shop but they weren far from the most lucrative, if you have the financial stuff nailed down (house, married, car etc) and so not so bothered about the wage, do it you’ll love it, if not you have been warned ;)

You’re checking the right places though, bikebiz is the main place, that and the shops website.

@ xiphon yeah i’ve moved to Coppull now but yeah the same area. I went down with two others from Preston and a few from daaarn saaarf. It was mainly an xc holiday last year which is what i prefer now.

Body armour i would agree with (even though i hate it) i rode with knee and elbow armour last year but a full face is over the top in my opinion, far too hot for xc riding (unless you come off and land on your face). Dual ply tyres and larger rotors are useful, and if you’re driving some mud tyres would be good too

I’ve been three or four times to that area in the summer and every time i’ve driven. You need to have a couple of drivers if you’re going to drive, i’ve done it on my own a couple of times from Preston and its not a pleasent experiance, last year there was two of us and it was much better! It wasn’t so much the cost of flying/driving it was more the fact that driving is a little more straight forward (for me). You can take as much stuff as you like (within reason), go when you, i feel safer that my bike isn’t getting thrown around want and just don’t have the hassel of flying. Costs wise last year was £300 fuel, £150 for the tunnel (don’t use the ferry they are minging) and about £120 in tolls, that was between four of us from Preston.

Riding wise i’ve never used a guide out there but i think if/when i go next i will try to get some accom that offers guiding, just so i can get to some hidden stuff that is smooooother lol, because the trails out there do get battered, they try their best with cutting the brake bumps out but its an impossible task.

If you want a cheap look at alpine elements, they did a holiday (self drive) for £199 fully catered. We thought the place was alright for a cheap holiday but other people on here thought different.

    Anyway hope this helps

i’m also thinking of trying them, they’re on offer at the minute, £25 for 4 pairs.

running rotors that are too big results in the pads not heating up enough and then not bedding in properly in normal use then the pads wear out really quickly.

never had this issue and i’ve always ran large rotors

i have pro2’s and DT240’s. The pick up on the DT is noticably better than the hopes but for the money you can’t really go wrong.

The king’s i had before were very nice but i wouldn’t pay full whack for them

i do 12 miles on similar terrain, i had a choice of all sorts of bikes but i went for a boardman cx bikes with full mudguards and i don’t regret it. Perfect for it. Even take the mudgurds off and use it properly off road sometimes but frankly that’s quite scary :)

i like the look of that pace a lot, but thats over double what an on one would cost. If you’re after shorter travel forks the inbred is hard to beat at that price, but if you want a bit more quality (and less weight) i’d look at a cotic soul.

I have just got a 456 but i’m putting some u-turn lyriks on it and using it for messing about local to where i live. Its not built yet but i don’t think i’ll leave my SC Blur at home to use it around the lakes/wales.

I’ve had carbon bikes for nearly three years (mtb’s). I’ve been to the Alps twice as well as doing enduro’s and 24hr events. But as someone else has said its not what its made out per say its more how well its made. Any bike will break if you exceed what its designed for. 4ft drops on a cross bike are not what they are designed for.

were the swampthings tubeless? Does anyone know if they make them in 2.35 dual ply? Or LUST?

    neil853

from my point of view i bought a maverick seatpost, they then sold the design to someone else ans suddenly i had no aftersales support so much so that i now had a very expensive paper weight. So after what, two years of production? There were little to no spares. Thats a piss take in anyones eyes. Crank bros importer 2pure bent over backwards but what could they do? They had bought a design and developed it. Crank bros bought the degin not the obligation to supply parts for another cycle co? Doesn’t matter now anyway, i’ve just put it down to experience, these things happen.

i have a set of ardents on order, but my thought was that they’d struggle on the front on natural stuff, that’s why i though the swampthing would be good?

    neil853

By poor design i mean the guide blocks being made of cheese. And the support was none existant. I would NEVER by a maverick product. To drop people who’d invested significant money in a product like that is shocking.

in my opinion no, the advice they gave me was inaccurate and the work poor. I wouldn’t use them again. There’s a chap on here called loco, i’ve’looked on his website, the prices look reasonable and his advice has been spot on.

also had work done by craig, top top man and excellent service. The maverick has gone now like as lets be honest, they’re a poor product.

i wouldn’t worry about, as long as you and your mates enjoy your riding forget about anything else.

what shortcut said +1, sometimes have a fettling session one night and service joplin/forks/replace gear cables (about twice a month). But i really enjoy the maintenance aspect, it’s another part of mountain biking to me. Plus it saves arguments when eastenders is on 8)
