depends on the rider you are i think and how you like to ride. I more or less started on Spd’s so all my riding experiance was gained using them and it hasn’t been that much of a big deal, but I’ve seen a few people who’ve persisted with spd’s when actually i think they should have given flats a go so that they could master some of the more basic skills such as braking and balance before worrying about being clipped.

For me personally i wouldn’t and don’t ride with anything else, they solve more problems than cause!

    Sounds really chewy

To be honest i’m more concerned about protecting the lower pivot form getting damaged by the chain/rocks…. Any ideas?

Just looking for said thread on chain device’s, can’t seem to see one?

I’ve thought about putting a dual and bash on mine but the lower pivot is very low and i think would hit anything before the bash ring, making it a risky buisness…..

It will work the same with all the ones you’ve mentioned, it will just need sealent to work (and strip on stans obviously). For the record i’ve ordered some tyres from on one and plan to use with 819’s with sealant.

not very water resistant, bought a pair and the rear is knackered after 6 months. The front battery life is pretty poor as well, no where near enough for a weeks commuter for me so i had to get another front light as it kept packing in at bad moments (middle of a round-a-bout). Honestly I’d look elsewhere, usb is useful but battery life and water sealing mean i wouldn’t purchase again :(

I have thule 591’s on my skoda octavia. I’ve had them for around 3 years now covering litterally thousands of miles with no problems what so ever. I like roof mounted carriers as it gives true flexibility for the car, as in no obstructions getting in or our of the car and really easy to get on and off and lock on.

Downsides are fuel economy (my octavia drops from 50mpg to 40 mpg when there’s 3 bikes, people and kit inside) and the eternal ‘driving under low things’ issue. But so far i’ve managed to avoid that (touches wood).

I had a similar choice and went for a blur ltc, sorry i know it doesn’t answer the question

My main favourites are my endura baa baa skull cap and base layer, they keep me warm and are excellent at temp regulation. My shimano winter boots are a close second but these are only truly waterproof when used with waterproof trousers. I very rarely wear w/proof trousers, only if its cold and raining as i mainly wear tights. Gloves are aldi waterproof ones which are nothing short of amazing (for £5!).

The key for me is being warm enough, not dry. I tend to use a soft shell quite a lot (Scott one).

My commute is shorter than yours though (12 miles), don’t know if this affects things.

brassneck that was my impression as well, when i went onto the bike builder thing on the SC website it said it would be 26lbs. Having said that it does have the joplin, saint brakes and a strong but slightly weighty wheelset on it.

despite it being heavier than i thought i am very pleased with it, it rides so well that i can forgive it the weight.

With normal/summer tyres on mine is 28.5lbs, which yes to be honest i was a little dissappointed with, it does seem to ride lighter than that mind, or maybe thats because i’m getting fitter i don’t know.

Yes Loddrik that’s exactly why i did it  not that i like looking at other bikes and so do other people that appreciate mountain bikes, jog on kid eh.

Unusual cable routing across the front triangle (below the shock). Is that how it’s designed to be run?

I assume so? seemed to be the logical path.

very nice, i bet you’re not using that rear tyre in the mud now though are you?

No i’ve got swampthings on now, although i was amazed how well that set up worked at Glentress.

I’ve got one on my revelations and it work really well, sort of a combination of a neo guard and crud catcher. Keeps almost everything off your fork legs too which i like.

I too am around the same weight (alright a bit heavier at 15 1/2 stone :) ) but i’ve had 819’s for two years running them both in the Alps and UK with no problems at all. Really easy to use tubesless aswell.

I’ve got two wheelsets with 819’s on, one was built onto my existing hubs and one i bought as a wheelset. It was much cheaper to get them in the wheelset form, but it was nice talking to the wheelbuilder (Paul Hewitt @ Hewitts Cycles, Leyland) about what build pattern i would like and what spoke type.

If you went for the pre-built option it would either give you a spare wheelset option or funds towards the conversion.

I’ve had one for about 4-5 months and I like it. I’ve always had giro’s (still got an E2) and it feels as well vented as that. Feels a bit beefy’er if you know what i mean? Like i say i like it.

half a stone, bad weather plus a dose of a bad cold meant no riding for two weeks. Rode at the weekend and it felt like someone was squeezing my chest the whole way round, looking forward to getting into the routine of cycling to work to get some fitness back

It’s a good route you’ll like it. Don’t forget to do ‘the slab’ though :) that’s the bit where you’ll climb up to a crag with some huge boulder type things, when you go through a bomb hole type thing the trail splits, take the right trail (It’s a bit of an arse of a climb but stick with it) and you’ll hit a steep little chute, good fun! Even better in the dark!

It’s a quality route that’s suprisingly technical. It’s better than hamsterly in my opinion and if it was a little longer it would be better than dalby.

It won’t occupy a full day though (unless your willing to go out into the wilderness with a map) so maybe link it with a trip with lee quarry? Some xc in the morning then some skills stuff in the afternoon? Lee quarry is only 40 mins or so from Gisburn

MC – i wasn’t telling you to do it more pissing on the industry recomendation that i was told. One or two of my mates saw it as a way of avoiding stripping it down which as you say is not the case. I think some people have had worse luck/issues than others, I’ve never had mine stick no matter what the weather (gets sticky yes but not stuck). I don’t think they’re the finished product but with some tlc (and some help from 2pure) mine has been fine.

average of 50 miles a week commuting and a further 25 miles a week off road. I need to sort out the road/off road ratio!

I’ve had one for a year or so and the ont issue i had was a bit of slop that was cured with some new guide blocks (which 2pure supplied FOC as it happened within the first few months). since then It’s been fine.

On the boot issue i ran mine with a boot for a while but upon recomendation from Ran @ 2pure i took it off. He recomends a quick service a bit more often than running a boot. Mainly because if anything gets past the boot it tends to stay in there. I haven’t noticed any difference since doing so.

2pure’s customer service is superb though, the best I’ve ever come accross

    here we go-

Nightride every week (stop the soft excuses).

ride every weekend like i used to in the spring.

Drop mates that keep saying there going to ride and then don’t.

Take a trip to ride some of northern scotland.

Ride somewhere OTHER than morzine this summer.

Get down to see my southern riding mates more (i actually miss the north downs).

Keep my bike stable down to 3 (otherwise i will be single).

See my new nephew as much as humanly possible.

Help my sister become a better more confident rider.

I’ll think of more later :)
