They are an alternative. Just like walking everywhere with your winky hanging out is an alternative to wearing clothes.

This sum’s it up perfectly. They are an alternitive, but not a viable one for proper off road IMO. Now I love my CX bike, and I mean It’s fantastic but I only use mine for tow paths and disused railway lines, well that and coast to coast crossings, duathlons, road rides and commuting :)

I haven’t read all the comments so forgive me if i’m repeating people, I’ll just give you my opinion.

The ‘best’ trail centres IMO are Glentress and Coed Y Brennin, they have the best range of trails for different abilities and facilities at the trail head. Glentress is slightly better for me in that It has Peebles nearby for a beer/B&B accom.

Lovely, and I mean lovely but too expensive (for me anyway)

I was doing something (for about 18 months) very similar until the back end of last year. I found, certainly for the first few months, that I was getting properly knackered towards day three. The key is just to eat the right things, eat when you get to work and not before you set off, a snack at 3pm really helped me too such as some unsalted nuts or a banana. I’m unconvinced about recovery shakes, they cost a fortune and (most) taste like sh!t. The For Goodness Shakes ones don’t taste bad but if you’re planning to have one every day the cost will soon mount up over a month. I’m sure there are gains to be had from protein shakes, but I think its for people much further down the fitness scale than me

I remember liking the idea of putting rigids on one of my old hardtails, went out for one ride, came back, took them off. It’s one of those ideas that sounded like a good idea in my head, not in practice.

@neil853 but I mostly talk about food, running and riding (with some drunken stuff thrown in)

I’ve had a couple of different brand of dropper post, none of them reliable, but then again i’m yet to try a reverb. I think they are incredibly useful things, but, £350 is way too much for me, they’re just not worth that much. I’m still umming and ahhh’ing over a reverb at £200! Plus, I have to say the Fox version doesn’t look good, and as someone else has said abouve the cable position could certainly be in a better position. Considering how long this has been in development, that’s a bit poor

won’t use TF tuned for anything. The top hats have worn a bit now which prompted the idea of the entire heavy duty kit from BETD. Not massively keen on the idea of needle rollers, its a lot of load for a VPP I think. Reckon i’ll give BETD a ring tomorrow. Easy enough to fit are they?

you’re implying by what you said that it wasn’t possible for me to have mine last that long. My point was that if people kept their drivetrains cleaner they would last longer, so many times I’ve went out on rides and peoples bikes are filthy, then they tell me that they go through three chains a year

I keep mine very clean, and ride it once a week at the very most, it’s still utterly shagged after a year if I don’t change anything!

    and?

    neil853

I think once to twice a week is enough

(I do keep my bike immaculate however)

I change my drivetrain once every 12-18 months, just don’t see the need to do change stuff any more than that

Moral is you should have a spare one in your parts box?

Do people really have ‘spare’ chains?

Superstar do some, the ol’fella bought some and although cheap seem to work OK. If its just for occasional use they’d be fine, otherwise invest in some of the above Park versions

Code y brenin or glentress if its for a weekend, both offer enjoyable trails for all of you to ride, that and they have the best facilities at the trail heads (showers, coffee and cake).

I’d have the whippet, the TIG apparently has a very rigid ride. But then again I’m biased as I like carbon bikes ;)

Threads like this do give me more confidence is us mountain bikers as a group. The same happened when my mate came off at Whinnlatter, everyone who passed wanted to and did help enormously.

Hope you get better soon yetisim, don’t let it keep you off the bike too long.

My shorts were a year old and had litterally been used a handfull of times. Nearly ALL the tape was coming off the seams. They hadn’t been washed on anything other than 30 degrees (as all my stuff is) and they fell to bits. I’m not going to list all the Endura stuff that has fell to bits on here as I can’t be bothered.

The reason I keep buying their stuff is I have a pair of bib tights from around 2001 still going! Almost everything else I’ve had since has fell to bits

Fair enough, Endura have replaced another faulty product without question. Really can’t fault their warranty policy. But if i’m honest, I’d rather their stuff just didn’t go wrong in the first place

I’ll just give a little bit of advice form my experiance. I had the Thule 591’s for about three years covering litterally thousands of miles in all weathers. They were left on when not used and all I had to do to them was replace one wheel cradle (£15) and that was due to the elements.

If you’re savvy you can get bargains from the roof box co and ebay. While I appreciate we’re all on a budget (me especially at the moment) I wouldn’t want to be skimping on something that is holding my bike onto the car at 70-80mph. I KNOW the Thule ones to be top quality stuff. Me peronally, I’d try to get those.
