Bryton 330 is ace. 36 hour battery life, 1 second recording, basic mapping (but the app to put it on is dead easy to use)

For £100. Way better than the garmin edge 25 for £150…  A bit better than the garmin 520 for £250

Bryton do less complicated ones, so bryton 310 without route mapping for £80, rider 10 for £50 (I think!)

If all you want is tracking miles and Strava, then a Garmin is way over the top.

I just tried Snappy driver and while it didn’t work, I like it! Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll continue to use it.

I’ve still got no idea how to get the usb ports working properly, I’m thinking a reinstall is the way forward. I was planning to back things up first but the external HDD (via usb) doesn’t work. So wasting lots of my time and potential for losing some data, all because of a chuffing windows update.

It won’t let me install kb4090913, I’m assuming because I’ve installed a later update with the patch included, unfortunately it’s not patched anything!

I’ve tried easy driver and driver boost which seem to do a similar thing, but I’ll give snappy a go.

    Cheers

The Microsoft summary of the issue is here

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/4091240/usb-devices-may-stop-working-after-installing-the-february-13-2018-upd

I’ve removed the offending update however the hid devices are still not being recognised. I downloaded a piece of driver software as mentioned above and that still does not suggest the appropriate driver to reinstall.

I can’t roll back the installation as there are no recent restore points.

So a Windows reinstall/refresh/reset is probably the way forward. Bugger.

    You have a PS2 port?

Your problem is that your PC is as old as the ark. Does it have a 3.5″ floppy drive as well?

It’s a fairly high end asus skylake motherboard… But I was surprised to find the PS2 ports on the back. Just as well really, I’d have been knackered without them!

I’d be going with that.  Making a lot of assumptions here but I’d start with:

    https://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/uk/en/support/detect.html

Thanks cougar, I’ve tried that, but I think that because windows has removed the drivers, the Intel detection isn’t expecting them to be present so they aren’t shown as missing. (If that makes sense!)

I’ve not got an install disk as it was a free upgrade from Windows 7. Has  anyone tried the various forms of ‘resetting’ or ‘refreshing’ windows 10? I’m thinking that might be my easiest option…

I’ve managed to uninstall the update, but had to do it manually through the command line as it wasn’t visible in Windows update.

I’ve also updated all the motherboard drivers, that was how the PS2 mouse started working. I was relieved when that happened as using keyboard gets pretty tedious pretty quickly!

    Thanks for the advice though!

Club la santa is ace, full of very fit people exercising which is quite motivating, but also full of very people’s other halves who just want to chill by the pool.

There are lots of other chilled out exercise classes that make a nice change from ragging yourself. Yoga, pilates etc.

Free instruction on all sports is also cool, as it’s nice to try new sports from time to time.

I had a Garmin edge 25, which worked ok and did an ok job. I recently moved to a Bryton rider 330 which is better in every way. The app is simple and does what it needs to do. The best bits are the 1 second recording, the ease of transfer of routes to and from you phone/web (WiFi rather than Bluetooth = instant!), Battery life of 36 hours and a price of £100 new, or £60 for an Amazon warehouse deals… Really impressed to be honest!

They do a mapping one with open maps on it which might be tourer friendly, but the route creation on the app is dead easy so I’m not sure full maps on the GPS is really needed

Wouldn’t reducing the stroke by 6mm also reduce the eye to eye by 6mm, so a 222×70 would become a 216×64?

A spacer is what I thought, I just wasn’t sure if there is something a little more complicated going on!

    Cheers!

The edge 25 doesn’t have 1 second recording, only the smart recording. Not so much of an issue on a road bike, but I found the twisty stuff on the trees doesn’t record very well (you get a straight line as the unit doesn’t think your going fast enough to record frequently)

The lezyne has had a firmware upgrade I believe that adds 1 second recording, so that would tick all the boxes for me. I have an edge 25 but would buy a lezyne as a replacement if my it broke

I take my phone out on rides with me in all weathers and my stuff generally has a rough time of it. I’d love a flagship phone, but would cry if I broke it or covered in in mud/scratches.

In fairness that’s pretty much my attitude to everything, no flash fancy bikes for me as it’ll just get dented/scratched, nicked or broken.

I’m sold on cheap Chinese phones, currently using a Xiaomi Redmi 3s, not the fastest but does everything I need it to and if I lost it, sat on it, dropped it or soaked it then it was £120 to replace.

I’ve had it nearly two years and it’s still getting weekly updates and everything works as it did when I first got it. The battery still lasts 2 days and the camera is still good. Not sure why anyone who doesn’t ‘game’ (3d or intensive gaming) would need anything else?

I installed it tonight and I’m initially impressed. The remote isn’t great, but it’ll do for the moment. Nice on OP, good PSA!

I was once accosted by an elderly member of the red sock brigade whilst riding a footpath…

I was very pleasantly surprised when he offered to help me lift my bike over the stile…

Had a good chat with him him about the fells and the importance of getting out when you’re feeling down. It was the highlight of my ride and really cheered me up.

Have you considered a coil shock? (Assuming your frame can use one) Less things to go wrong so generally more reliable and better performing, but heavier.

I’ve just bought one as well, is the included remote really that bad? Is the bontrager dropline remote a better solution than buying a modified shifter?

Wondering whether to just buy/install it all at the same time or not..

    Cheers

Sunrace 11-46 works fine with my gx rear mech. A wee bit of extra range compared to a 42t.

I’ve heard that the manitou MacLeod is pretty good. Simple but performs well with adjustments that do what they are supposed to. Currently £155 new from CRC.

I just use a cheap Chinese phone I can replace easy if I drop it in a river or sit on it. It’s not got a brilliant camera but snapseed helps make the photos look ok. Or I take a still from my cheap Chinese gopro-a-like, which also works well.

Apparently the new spring fixes this issue, but I’d be interested to see how you get on as I was thinking of buying the same seat post

It’ll be steering for you as well soon!

But it does make sense to use the battery to do other things while you’re lugging it about.

I bought a cheap Chinese Android unit from aliexpress…. It’s been grand. It’s 8 core CPU and 2gb ram, so like a decent tablet.

GPS works fine, android auto works fine, music player is good, Bluetooth streaming is good. I’ve not put the reversing camera in yet,but I’ve no reason to think it won’t be fine. The diagnostics app ‘torque’ works really well and the unit displays stuff about the van well, doors open, air con, etc.

Only issues are the WiFi signal isn’t great, but I only need that every so often for map updates, which I can preload onto a sdcard. I’ve also heard that the Bluetooth calling isn’t great, but it’s not something I really need.

I did put a custom ROM on it and I love fiddling about with electronics/software, so it’s not for everyone….

Scottoiler ultimate bike solution / flaer guard. Works amazing as a chain lube, makes washing chain and cassette a doddle after a mud bath.

The Gitup Git2 does a good job for me, cheapish, good quality, firmware updates still coming out, accessories easy to get hold of (all the gopro stuff fits, from batteries to waterproof cases) no real negatives other than the android app was a bit rubbish, although I believe it has recently had an update

Tillydog, it interesting you mention the rebound damping setup… I’ve been convinced for a while that the ‘rapid recovery’ setup of rockshox forks is bollox. I’ve heard from rockshox designers that the most common mistake they see with fork setup is rebound being too slow. So its almost like they’ve tried to counter it by making the HSR faster. So if you set LSR at the correct rate for your spring you have a pogo stick when the HSR is working, but if you slow it down, it then packs and feels harsh.

I’ll try changing the rebound setup next time I’ve got the fork open. Did you just remove the rebound ring shim? Or put the crossover in as per the light tune in the manual?

Onzadog – great minds think a like!

Take the tokens out, try to have as much air volume as you can. If you bottom out too easily, then add a token but keep the air pressure the same. Otherwise you just end up in a wallowy mess with no support and probably sitting too deep in your travel with it ramping up sharply at the end of the stroke (which you’ll hit more often!)

That said, if you’re happy taking the damper to bits, moving the ring shim away from the piston helps as it reduces the preload on the compression shims, but you won’t have the same range of adjustment on the LSC adjuster.

Changing to a lighter oil will affect both low speed compression and rebound, I don’t think it affects high speed movement that much. So it will definitely change things, but not necessarily the thing you want to change, the HSC.

    So…

Bird zero am @ £400 = no stock
Cotic bfe @ £550 = no stock until march
Orange crush 2017 = no stock
    Dartmoor Hornet @ £260 = stock…

Thinking I might go with the hornet. It’s going to be a 2nd bike, with all the left over bits, so I don’t want to have too much money invested in the frame.

    Neb

Ooh, so it has. Not sure how I managed to misread the bfe geometry chart. That’s very interesting…

    Cheers!

    Neb

I thought about a bfe, the only issue was the reach. 428mm in a large is a bit small.

An orange crush would have been good too, but it’s boost only I think.

    Neb

My only concern with the Dartmoor Hornet is that it’s 2.7kg in a large. My 165mm FS bike is 2.8 minus the shock, so it does seem a touch beefy for what it is, however it does fit the bill.

Good shout on the bird zero am, I’ll keep an eye out…

Any thoughts on the pipedream Sirius 4g? Looks like it could be an option?

    Any more suggestions??

    Cheers

There’s nothing someone could do on an ebike that a healthier, fitter person couldn’t do on a normal bike.

So an ebike is a bit of a crutch. I’ve no problem with that, if someone needs a walking stick it wouldn’t stop me walking with them.

There’s loads of ex industrial places in the UK where this would be ace, both for punters and the local communities. The Lake District doesn’t need this. I think most of the people visiting the Lakes wouldn’t want this either, so it begs the question why Cumbria Tourism is a supporter of the proposal…?

Isn’t the rebound damper shaft wheelsize specific?

Am I right in thinking that a longer shaft (he he) would be ok, so a 29er would work for all wheel sizes, but a 26er would only fit 26″ lowers?

*Edit* thinking about it, you might have clearance issues running a 29″ shaft on a smaller wheelsize, rebound damper might hit compression damper. Not sure what the exact dimensions are.

I picked up a Gitup Git2 camera last spring, works a treat with regular firmware updates too. The case, batteries and all the accessories are the same fit as gopro hero 4 so spares are dead easy to find.

The stabilisation works surprising well too!

I’ve heard good things about the Yi camera mentioned above as well.

I’m in a similar position to the OP (probably the same road…), the fell road is often closed due to ice/snow, each time they put a week long closure on it. Which is fine if it remains cold. However like today, the temperatures increased to 8 degrees, it chucks it down with rain, but it’s never reopened until the end of the original closure date.

I’m sometimes looking at an extra hour on my commute if I avoid the perfectly fine fell road which is a bit annoying!

I plan on doing something epic with my existing bike for my 50th

I’m 40 in a couple of years and I’ve gone off the idea of a fancy new bike, I think I’d get more from an epic trip away doing something I’d never get a pass out for normally. Any suggestions?

I was thinking 10 days in Whistler or an epic mountain journey or something that’ll give me an incentive to train for.

I dropped the ring shim two positions way from the piston face, so now only preloaded by 2×0.15 shims instead of the 4 shims previously. It’s made a noticeable difference on the open setting, clearly the range of adjustment isn’t as wide (but that is fine). I was a bit worried that the pedal position wouldn’t have enough damping, but that is good too, a little softer which is much better for the riding I do. The lock position is only a little softer, I guess due to the extra spring that preloads the stack.

It has made a difference, but I guess the fact I’ve changed the damping oil, the lube oil and re-greased the seals would also have made a positive change regardless.

As an aside, I wonder if a Shockwiz would give any useful information?

Unfortunately (or fortunately!) I’ve converted to a coil, which feels better for mid stroke support, it actually feels a touch harsh. My thinking is that an air fork probably needs a touch more lsc damping and can get away with less HSC due to the progressive spring (that can be made more progressive with tokens if bottom out is an issue)
