Just in case anyone is interested, I’ve fiddled around with the shock a little and it does seem that by reducing the volume of the negative chamber it makes the shock a more supple in the initial part of the travel.

I’ve been impressed how much different you can make it feel by changing the spring curve.

    Any more updates or thoughts?

I’ve ordered some tokens and I’m curious to know more!

they are cracking value bikes Phil. which colour frame did you get? I struggled to decide, be interested to see what the black ano looks like in the flesh.

frosty, I’ve got the saddle pushed right back and the reach while seated is fine with a 50mm stem. if you’re dropping to a 35mm stem then you’d probably appreciate the 20mm longer top tube of the XL frame. not sure how that would affect your standover or reach when stood up tho.

Not sure off the top of my head… But I’m 5’11” with a 33″ inseam (i think!) I’m using a 125mm reverb with probably about 25mm of the post showing, I nearly went with a 150mm reverb but thought it was a bit close to call whether It’d fit…

I was honeymoon in Madeira and was very tempted with a day or two on the bike. Not sure the new wife would have been too impressed tho!

The is place gets good reviews – freeridemadeira.com

I was put off a little by the cost of it, it seemed a little steep. (Like Madeira is!)

Its a 75 degree seat tube, so pretty steep!

Rose Uncle Jimbo? No frame only option but everything can be altered to exactly what you want and I mean everything. Effectively you get the kit you want with a frame thrown in free. If you don’t like the frame, you can throw it out and buy an orange alpine frame and its cheaper than buying a full bike from orange!

    I really like mine!

Does anyone have experience with the wtb trail boss as a rear tyre? Specifically thinking Tough/Fast rolling. In my head it ticks a lot of the boxes for an ‘Enduro’ tyre.

No it doesn’t limit the ultimate liability, but its bound have an effect on the amount paid out isn’t it?

Could it be used by the event insurer to reduce their overall risk, therefore making the event insurance cheaper?

    just a thought.

I still don’t get why it is needed.

Someone suggested that individuals insuring themselves for a Personal Accident limit the liability of future claims from the organiser. ie, if I insure myself for a £900 payout for a broken back, then I value my back at £900 and if I make a claim from the organisers insurance then their liability is limited to what I insured myself for.

is that credible? I can see some logic to it, but not sure of the ins and outs. it would explain why its a requirement if its a prerequisite of the event insurance for the competitors have PA to limit liability claims.

Interesting comment from Matthew from UKGE:

“The personal accident cover is for you to cover you against loss of earning and such like.”

If that is what ukge think bespoke is offering then fair enough, but it isn’t. To get coverage for ‘loss of earnings and such like’ is a damn sight more than £8 a month…

I’ve just got the new jimbo, enjoying it so far. The spec is excellent for the price, frame build quality is good with a 10yr warranty (might be 5 years now). What’s not like?!

I can see the concern about the race organiser being sued, but personal insurance will only make things worse as the race organiser will now be dealing with insurance companies rather than individual people.

If I’m paying for a policy that’ll give me cash if I hurt myself and I do hurt myself, I’m going to claim. Without the policy I’d just take it on the chin, chalk it up as bad luck, all part of racing, these things happen, etc.

Ukge is encouraging the suing culture and making it more expensive for everyone, themselves included!

    Neb

But if I was planning to do just one event its £70 for the race + £8×12 for the annual insurance. It seems expensive before you add on the cost of insurance!

I just don’t understand the ukge logic. It makes no sense. At best it looks like they are clueless and at worst that they are profiteering from their links with their preferred insurance company. Either way, I’m out.

I think it is a pf30 bottom bracket. I went with the e13 trsr chainset, I didn’t realise it had its own standard of bottom bracket.. So double bugger!

I had a 2010 commencal meta 55 previously, the uncle jimbo pedals much nicer than the meta, there is very little / no pedal bob and the steep seat angle keeps you in the right position. I got the dual position pikes but to be honest the pedal position is good enough to not need them.

I was struggling to decide between the Jimbo or the granite chief, went with the Jimbo as I figured the weight was going to be about the same and it fitted better with my local riding (lake district).

It is a large, I’m 5’11” and it feels OK size wise, the steep seat angle makes the top tube feel shorter than I thought it would but its fine for me with a 50mm stem. If you’re much taller than me an xl would probably suit.

Didn’t enduro mag test loads of bikes with loads of different riders and aggregate the times? I think the yt Capra was a clear winner with every rider posting fastest times while on it. So, with the same rider, what makes a bike faster than others??

The reviews talk about how good the large negative spring makes the shock feel, so why bother having the ability to reduce the volume?

I wasn’t sure if the ratio of positive to negative should stay the same to get the best out of the shock. Whether if you put 2 rings in the positive you should put 1 in the negative for example.

It felt OK with no spacers, a little too linear perhaps, so i figured I’d play about with the rings to see what happened! You can get the rings from chain reaction for £14 if you fancy having a fiddle with them.

I received an Uncle Jimbo this Christmas, I’ve ridden it 4-5 times and really enjoying it so far. I went for the Uncle Jimbo 2, with pike, monarch plus rc3, SRAM guide rsc brakes, x01 drivetrain and DT swiss ex1501 wheels. all for a bargain price of £2,600. the orange equivalent Alpine 160 is £4,200 for arguably a worse spec.

The bike was delivered a month earlier than quoted and I could change the spec of anything until the build date.

The frame warranty was 10 years when I bought mine, I believe it has dropped to 5 years. it is still more than most bike manufacturers.

I’ve had a set of the durolux RC2 non TA forks since 2012. I really like them! They feel really nice and much more supportive mid stroke than the older style Pikes they replaced. They are dead easy to service and the internals are all metal, no cheap plastic bits anywhere. The qloc axle is really impressive in use. I’ve had over 2 years battering the hell out of them in the lakes + alps + megavalanche and I’d definitely buy again.

The only issues I’d be wary of are the distributors aren’t the best and as a result the availability of spares/support is a bit dodgy. I ended up buying seals from germany via eBay via and found that the £15+£5 shipping was for one seal…. If you go via your LBS they can have the fun of sorting spares for you, I wish I’d done that!

There is quite a lot of info on the German http://WWW.mtb-news.com website, including service and mods. Google translate makes it entertaining at least!

    Hope that helps!

We live in Brigham and love it here. Cockermouth is a cracking wee old fashioned (in a good way!) market town with lots going on. I was brought up in Askham and although i love it there the house prices are mental! I reckon I’d like living in Greystoke, Langwathby or Eden valley as more realistic options.

Its interesting hearing other peoples opinions!

Best forks I’ve had are my ‘top of the range’ Suntour Durolux forks. They’ve been ace for me. They cost me £250 and massively outperformed the pikes I had previously. Fox forks are a rip off! I’d far rather spend the £800 on a weeks mountain bike holiday somewhere hot!

I was there on Sunday, it was awesome fun but bloody slippy in places… Spooky wood was ace as always, but driftastic at times!

No idea what the weather has been upto up there since..

Hows about a Motorola Razr Maxx?? A case made of Kevlar, decent build quality, waterproof with a battery almost twice as big as every other phone? perfect for weekends away biking!

Think I’ll probably get one as my next phone.

its about the same, maybe ever so slightly better. I bought the sata 3 as I thought I’d put it my next laptop. To be honest a sata 2 drive would have the same performance.

I’ve just swapped the hard drive from my Samsung netbook (n220) for a sata3 ssd … its made a difference but not much! the CPU is too slow and is much more of a bottleneck than the hdd. on a newer dual core netbook it might make more of a difference.

Suntour Durolux?? the new RC2 Cartridge is supposed to be good? 180mm internally adjustable to 160mm or 140mm as required. there are some reviews on bikeradar and pinkbike that seem to rate it.

its a bit off the wall, but looks like it might be decent? (I’m waiting on mine arriving, otherwise I’d have given a proper opinion! £250 new on the bike to work scheme is what swayed me)

it’s in good condition, a wee bit of chain slap on the chain stay. I’ll take some photos of it tonight and send them to you.

I’ve an Orange Crush frame for sale if that would be of interest? Its built like a tank and will take 160mm forks.

its a lovely frame just a bit big for me at 19″.
