Consider the Haute Maurienne, friends of ours went there every half term. Quieter than the mega resorts, plenty to ski, and accessible from annecy
nbtFull MemberWhat’s your alternative route @fossy? I’m in marple and we recently moved offices to the centre of town so I’ve been using Oxford Road, Floop, Nelstrop and Alan Newton Way
1nbtFull Member100gb might not be enoug for a family, TBH, but 5g (or even 4g) internet should be fine
nbtFull MemberLevel 2. 37 points.
That’s more likely because I don’t join challenges, and for a long time I was using Strava on my phone to track rides as my Garmin device needed to be plugged in. New Garmin headunit means I now track on that and sync via bluetootha

nbtFull MemberNo pool, but we had a night in this place on last week’s cycle tour of East Yorks and it was fabulous. Food was EXCELLENT
https://thehighfieldhouse.com/
Not massively more expensive than the Bridlington B&B we stayed in the following night
nbtFull Memberany ladies, children or men with small feet near stockport the pear mill adi factory had lots of five ten spd’s for £10 size 6.5 was largest.
Oh, did they have any non-spd versions for flat pedallers? We went to Pear Mill on Sunday but didn;t bob into the shop, needed to get home for lunch
nbtFull MemberJanuary trip to Flaine booked (well the accomodation is booked, I need to sort the eurotunnel etc), season passes also purchased to cover that trip and the potential second jaunt in March
nbtFull MemberVelogames is up and running:
Anyone who’s previously entered a team into the STW Grand Tours League for either the Vuelta, the Giro or the TDF will automatically join again if they enter a team – I can see there are a few of us in there already
For anyone who’s not done it before, you can spend 100 points on 9 riders in various categories, and the riders score points depending on how they do each day / overall. I’ve never quite figured it out but I pick riders who I want to do well and tend to finish mid table. Once you’ve entered your team, join league ID 347313627
nbtFull MemberTour of Britain starts tomorrow, if you’re in the velogames league for the vuelta you’ll be in for the ToB
nbtFull MemberCracking stage! Great race among the break and lovely to see the win, then another race among the gc with a super comeback from more than one rider we thought had been dropped
nbtFull MemberI think today is a breakway day – I’m half an hour behind live coverage but the break already has an 11 minutes advantage…
nbtFull Memberthanks @kcr, that’s great. Roof in the garage is about 10 foot tall so it’s not out of the question, but not easy to reach that high
nbtFull MemberI say go the other way and bring back indoor smoking – a Dredd style smokatorium though, not just a free for all
nbtFull Membersliding hooks on a rail give you more flexibility to shuffle things around when hanging or removing bikes or re-organising
There was a thread on this some time ago, does anyone have a link to it please?
has anyone mounted such a sliding rail on a wall rather than the ceiling? does it work?
nbtFull MemberI don’t think the Angliru features this year. They do finish at Lagos de Covadonga on Stage 16.
Disappointed to learn that Lennert van Eetvelt didn’t start yesterday, covid I guess? He’d had a fantastic first week
nbtFull MemberThere’s nothing really for non riding youngsters near FJs. There’s a small park on the estate downhill from the vehicular entrance, but the push up hut is just off the main Glossop road. From there you could walk along the main road (there is a pavement) and walk into Etherow park, or from the main entrance you can walk into Compstall and through into Brabyns Park, both as mentioned in the other thread. Neither are close though in that regard
nbtFull MemberNed Boulting has tweeted a couple of bits of info about it
Yes, Ned replied when i asked on twitter, live coverage every day plus highlights in the evening. I’d still rather have had them covering the Vuelta though ;)
nbtFull MemberCycling stage does reasonable write ups for each stage
https://www.cyclingstage.com/vuelta-2024-results/stage-8-spain-results-2024/
Today is interesting, couple of big hills including a loop, finishing with a downhill into Granada. Breakaway day?
1nbtFull MemberOne of the issue with watching via “timeline marker” catchup on Discovery+ is that while you do see important action that gets covered and the live coverage from 20km to go (or whereever you skip to) you don’t know about other things that happen but only get mentioened in passing. I’ve learned today that Rigoberto Uran crashed on Stage 6 yesterday and had to withdraw, meaning this was his final race
https://www.cyclingstage.com/vuelta-2024/vuelta-2024-withdrawals/
Little Kenny Elissonde also withdrew in the stage, no idea why as yet. I did see both DvB and Rui Costa’s crashes
Today is a rolling stage with a pokey little Cat 2 towards the back end.
the only KOM climb of the day goes by the name of Alto del 14%, which refers to the steepest ramp of the climb. The average gradient of the 8.4 kilometres long drag sits at 5.3%. A rolling section leads to the downhill before the last 12 kilometres are entirely flat.

Looks like any sprinter who can climb will be in with a shout, so WvA has to be favourite surely?

nbtFull MemberOctopus gave us a quote (not an estimate) based on a few questions about our house and neighbouring houses. We didn’t even have an EPC at the time, though we did have to get one to proceed. The EPC said we needed cavity wall insulation before we could have the 7.5k grant for an ASHP. Turns out we didn’t as we already had it but the surveyor hadn’t seen it as we’d just had the house repointed. Anyway, several months after expressing interest and paying a £500 deposit, they came to survey the house. The surveyor was recently qualified to work alone having been trained to then shadowing / working with another surveyor. In fairness he said the amount of enquiries that they’d had was incredible hence the delays while they trained staff.
The survey suggested we needed a 9kw heat pump, and that we need to replace several radiators: 4 regular rads, one towel rail and one fan convector. At this point I’d paid £500 for the survey but would have got a full refund if I’d decided not to go ahead. A friend also had an octopus survey, and also paid for a local outfit to do their own survey. In his case he’s decided to go with the other guys: the cost of their survey is offset against the cost of the fitting, which is more expensive than octopus, but also more adaptable: they’ve agreed to wall mount the ASHP above head level to preserve floor space (which octopus won’t do) and have a lower figure for the requirements calculation because they were willing to exclude the rarely used conservatory, as opposed to octopus who said “triple the size of the radiator in there, or disconnect them and cap them off completely if you want to exclude the conservatory”. The local guys were thus able to recommend a smaller pump than octopus for him.
We decided to go with octopus anyway and the wait for fitting was thankfully much shorter than the wait for the survey. The fitting is now complete.
There have been some minor issues like the team going ahead and fitting a radiator with visible damage rather than saying “this is damaged, we’ll get another”. Same guy also dropped some hot flux on the floor and burnt the lino. They’ve subsequently replaced the chipped radiators and paid for replacement flooring, which is fair enough. The replaced towel rail radiator is now rocking slightly as the bracket is loose, so they’re coming to fix that at some point.
The 9kw unit they fitted is actually a Daikin 14kw unit that’s software limited to 9. It’s pretty darn quiet when it does run
Can share figures for radiator sizes if anyone wants to see them
nbtFull MemberLOVING IT! What a great day, suddenly it’s made this race so much more interesting
nbtFull MemberRolling start, flat finish – guaranteed sprint day. Wout has one win and has given up the red, but still wears the green – with only a narrow lead over Kaden Groves. SPRINT FINISH. I’m in the office so I think tonight will be a night to use the “timeline markers” on Discovery+ to skip to attacks / crashes / the last 20km
nbtFull MemberMany of the after fit market are specifying the HP to run at 45 or 50 degrees, press them on that, and dont take no for an answer, they may gove some rubbish about weather compensation (which should be used), but find out what they have designed it as, if its above 40, tell them to do it again for a 35 deg. flow, if they say they cant, go elsewhere, as they clearly dont know what they are doing.
Bugger. Wish I’d known this earlier. We had an ASHP fitted by Octopus a month ago, amd the flow temp is specified as 50. Was kind of assuming as a pretty big supplier who seem to be well regarded in the energy market, they’d know what they were doing. They did replace a LOT of radiators though and they new ones are a lot bigger – in one case literally three times the size. The heating is set to 19 deg and it’s kicked in just one morning so far, on Monday this week, but the hot water has been great – way better than the gas combi it replaced.
nbtFull MemberThe GC boys will get to play today, we’re into Spain proper with a stage featuring a Cat 2 climb, a Cat 1, a Cat 3 with bonus secondsm and a Cat 1 finish. Quilte looking forward to it, shame I’m in a bloody meeting all day
nbtFull MemberWe had similar thoughts till I saw the prices, Annecy is popular and that means high prices.
Theres a nice (non-technical) cycleway round the entire lake
There are “water taxis” so you can explore the places round the lake
There’s quite a lot of walking
nbtFull MemberHave you tried measuring your seatbones and putting the numbers in one of the many online calculators
In my case I used the tool from a Specialized dealer which suggested 143 for me
nbtFull MemberI’ve been thinking the same, been on 143 for 20 years but the second half of yesterday’s ride was DEEPLY unpleasant – for me it was more about pain deep in the glutes as they seemed to seize up, and they’re still sore this morning
nbtFull MemberLast call, not sure what time the deadline is. Reminder, the first and last stages are ITTs, stage 5 is the only out and out sprint stage, the rest are either hilly or mountainous
nbtFull MemberChrist, I know UAE sent an insanely string team to the tour but have you seen the team at the vuelta? It’s not exactly a list of no-hopers
- João Almeida
- Adam Yates
- Isaac Del Toro
- Brandon McNulty
- Jay Vine
- Pavel Sivakov
- Marc Soler
- Filippo Baroncini
The last guy is the only one I haven’t heard of, and they’ve all been riding pretty well this season
2nbtFull MemberIs it available on free to view TV?
The highlights show is usually broadcast on Quest, freeview channel 12
During the olympics, Discovery+ were running an offer to new subscribers allowing them to sign up for £3.99 a month till the end of the year, which would give you full coverage for £3.99 if you signed up then cancelled and just got one month
nbtFull Member15 in the league already
https://www.velogames.com/spain/2024/leaguescores.php?league=347313627
nbtFull MemberIt will work, yes, but you may need a VPN to be able to access subscription services. Live BBC should be fine, but catch-up may require a VPN. Not sure about Discovery+ for the vuelta, the issue is that the coverage is sometimes available in one country but not in another
you won’t be able to access prime video whlie running a VPN, and whlie it will work without the VPN, the available content may be different
nbtFull MemberShame, Courmayeur is one of my favourite resorts. If they still include it on the season pass, we might even venture over there – but then again there are so many resorts I haven’t yet skiied, like I’ve never been to Chamonix, or the Portes du Soleil!
1nbtFull MemberGot a new board (Bataleon) and skis (Elan Ripstick 96)
Nice! I picke up some skis from Decathlon – bit matchy matchy but Mrs NBT and I are now both on Wedze Patrol 95 skis.
In the UK, they’re £350 flat, so you need to get bindings
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/freeride-free-touring-ski-patrol-95/_/R-p-326186?mc=8590043
But you can pick them up with demo bindings for £350
In france, we paid €300 per pair with bindings
They get good reviews , albeit we’re technically both on the 95W which is a “women’s” version – it’s light blue rather than red, and I’m only 70kg so the 175s are perfect for me, I’ve really enjoyed skiing them
nbtFull MemberPre season ending injury in Sainte Foy
Tignes in April over on the rarely opened TK3000 in Val d’Isere
We went through the tunnel which I can honestly say I’ve never seen open before. We followed everyone else’s tracks and like everyone else ended up WAY off piste. Great skiing though!
nbtFull MemberNot going back to Samoens or the grand massive next year though as the lift prices are **** stupid nowadays, It used to be cheap there!…
Tip, season passes are half price till October (I think) so if you’re doing two weeks a season pass works out cheaper than a 2 week pass. You also get 3 days in other resorts
