For all those complaining about the narrow area of focus on varifocals – speak to your optician. I went to varifocals the last time I changed specs, having used single vision for over 40 years. Game changer for me. Mrs NBT had swapped over ahead of me, and been fine, then hated her second set for the reasons mentioned above, to the point she didn’t wear them. The difference was she had gone to a different optician who use a different lens maker. For her third set we went back to the first optician and once again, all was great.

To me, it sounds like a poor prescription. I’d be complaining to the optician saying “this is not good enough”. If they don’t offer different options of lenses (maybe even a different lens from the same maker) then get your money back and try varifocals from someone else. You only get one set of eyes, and you use them quite a lot, treat them to some good stuff and spend some money rather than saving a few quid by using cheap stuff so you can afford nice set of forks / new phone / whatever

Well, twice this year. Previous to this I did once see it in Grizedale Forest about 18 years ago, but I wouldn’t call it regular

Never thought to use the actual camera  – it’s sitting there waiting to be sold, but while I still have it MI might try again if it’s high tonight. I just used my iPhone

It got progressively more colourful until about 11 when it tailed off.

Same here, then it went bananas just after midnight – compare the two sets of photos (page 5 and page 6) I posted to see the difference

note @tech, what happened to the ability to link to a specific post, that was always really useful? “just” need an anchor tag with the post ID so we can link and the scroll to that post, pls?

     Remo Williams: Unarmed and Dangerous

I recall that, with Fred Ward. It was called “Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins” in the US and I think it’s on Youtube. I watched it at the cinema – I was the only person in the screening! – and enjoyed it som much I went on to read lot of the books on which it wqas based. The idea was if it was a success they’d turn all the books into films, but it never happened. I recently rewatched (maybe on Prim, maybe on youtube, can;t recall offhand) and I think I know WHY that didn;t happen ;)

The disturbance levels have passed 1400. That’s crazy, they were 900 or so earlier this year’s, that’s way higher than I’ve ever seen

    Makes for good viewing though

It would last longer if it wasn’t used by hgvs, but there are farms and others dwellings accessed from the road so i doubt it would close completely. It’s WAY longer than the broken road by a factor of miles

If there were a nicer way to get from here to Glossop, id do this on the tandem, but mrs nbt is not keen on the idea

Likewise, or at least included in a subscription, but not one off rentals or purchases

Threads like this make me think we as a community need to do more ‘boys/girls days out’ get people out enjoying the riding again without performance pressure etc.

We need to revive the @pook’s pootles

hold it and they will come

I tried racing once, I was awful. It was awful. I decided to just ride bikes and hang out with friends from then on, even if they were racing. I’ve quite enjoyed it, though i appreciate things may differ for others

    Bloodsport

Bloodsport seems to be repeated on Legend, or an i thinking of the other one where JCVD travels to Asia and enters a tournament?

For me, id love to rewatch Nikita (the original french version) and Leon (The Professional), neither of which seem to be available. Might have to break out my dvd player or perhaps even my vhs recorder…

Not been but it’s on my radar. The 6 day lift pass covers one day out in each of the other resorts, and the dynamic pricing varies by resort, so buy early in the smaller resorts. Plenty more info on snowheads

I didn’t have you down as a powderhound NBT

i have done a few off piste trips and enjoyed North America where you can ski anywhere

I’d say up to 90mm would be fine, maybe even 95. Mrs NBT went from 72mm underfoot to 95mm and skis just fine, in fact she loves the new skis. As always it’s about the technique: if you’re good you CAN ski the whole mountain on 72mm underfoot, or even on 122mm underfoot, but there’s a balance point to be had for those of us who do a week or two each year

Last of his albums I bought was “Waking up the Neighbours” which was produced by Mutt Lange. Distinct Def Leppard vibes in places.

That’s Mutt Lange who’s married to Shania Twain (or was, they separated quite a while ago apparently)

I last bought skis at Decathlon, I bought their own brand skis as they looked interesting online and had good reviews and most importantly had both a great price and were available at the Decathlon we passed in La Plagne while driving up to resort. I bought the Patrol 95 for both Mrs NBT (in a 165) and myself (in a 175) – although I actually bought the 95W version for us both which is technically a women’s ski. Meh. I’m not a big bloke and I’ve really enjoyed skiing it. Best bit is they were €300 a pair, including bindings.

My first ever trip was Bulgaria at Christmas (albeit Dec 1997 so some years ago). The resort was green.

I adore Courmayeur, and I’ve enjoyed Passo Tonale a couple of times. I reckon both would be fine by Christmas in terms of snow covers, though not sure about mid-dec. THey’re not huge resorts – you could ski every piste in Courmayeur in one day if you go hard – but there’s enough to go at for sure

Mrs_oab and I hired one in about 1996.
She’s refused to get on one since!

A tandem is a relationship accelerator. Wherever your relationship is going, a tandem will get you there faster

I don’t think I want any of the bikes upside down anyway. Maybe I could tolerate the rigid MTB being, it’s effectively my gravel bike so the brakes just need to work.

I’ve stored bikes hanging from front / back wheels for abut 20 years now and honestly can’t say I’ve ever had an issue

That’s – interesting. If you’re on Facebook, post it up onthe Tandem Club group, it will spark a bit of discussion

If you are in the “collecting tandems” game, there’s a Ventana El Conquistador de Montañas Full Suspension Tandem on there for only £500 – size Large / medium, Maverick DUC32 forks. Mrs NBT has banned me from getting it, we’ve only just sold a tandem and she won’t go on an MTB tandem with me again :(

I got a pair from Ride Bikes in Ulverston. I got a refund, the zip broke very quickly. Great shop, less sure about the shoes, though that was several years ago so perhaps things are better now?

Ermm – how does this work? Is it just for watches, or will it work on my Edge Explore 2? Can it help me fix the limited choice of ride profiles? I suppose it won’t do that though :(

Sounds like I’m not too far off anyway, which is good. In truth I doubt anyone attending the play would notice it being “wrong”, but every bit helps

300 miles in 5 days, hardly a tough ask.

It’s all relative – I might well be ok, but for a non-cyclist that’s pretty intimidating

Just had a quote from our usual place in Mayrhofen for half term next feb (22-1st) I had to call them as I thought there’d been a misprint.

7 nights. Self catering. In an apartment for two adults and three kids.

    £4840.

    Are you fixed on Mayrhofen?

A week in Sainte Foy Tarentaise (a super little family resort) is currently €2910.60 in the Etoile des Cimes

There are activities for the kids and a pool etc includined in that price

@ransos The road to BSM will be as clear as possible as it’s the autoroute, the road up the hill will also be cleared. If it snows, you may be delayed, but if not then it will be fine. Drive.

    @bajsyckel
i suggest starting by deciding where you want to go or at least limiting the choice to one or  two resorts, then try the things you mention. Add on snowtrex and chalets direct
