    Yes, I appreciate that 😆

Hopefully the house will have a convenient and secure cellar.

Did anyone see Paul Dacre apparently taking the credit, on behalf of the Daily Mail, for the justice served on these racist, murdering scum?

I know the Mail campaigned and so will have had an influence, and I hate to admit that of such a rag, but he really should have shown some magnanimity and paid the Lawrence family some respect instead of crowing. I found it very distasteful and inappropriate.

Do you warm up properly? Do a decent hill climb or something to get your heart rate up, I find I feel pretty lethargic unless I do this.

    This.

I felt very lethargic today, but after 90mins riding and a reasonable amount of climbing I was fit to do another couple of hours.

Iain; I like it, I don’t plan to change it.

It only becomes awkward when someone takes my name down. I say my name but immediately have to add a cheery “That’s Iain with two i’s” by which time they’ve already written Ian so they have to scribble it out or squeeze the extra i in whilst acting like they’ve never seen Ian spelled Iain and almost invariably write Iian.

Tom – really, please don’t feel bad. It didn’t hurt me or my bike. I thought it was funny 😆

There are lots of angries about, they’re everywhere!

    Cheeriness always wins.

Some folks just walk around brewing their rhetoric, going over it in their internal dialogue, ever ready for a fight.

Pity them, move on, try not to be angry.

For coughs and colds I ingest Peak grit and slurry …smashing ride out, first ride in 2 weeks for me and despite the bronchial broohaha I felt a-OK.

Thanks for organising nbt, Merry Xmas all.

Zocchi have been making suspension for long enough, both motorcycle and MTB, but I think they suffer in popularity by being an Italian manufacturer; lots of stigma to overcome …long on style, short on reliability etc.

Ohlins, White Power & Showa seem to rule the performance motorbike sector, Rock Shox & Fox rule MTB. In MTB I suspect there’s a small proportion of the market left after that and there are the likes of BOS, X Fusion, DT Swiss and Cane Creek to compete with in that ‘niche’.

My bike has front brake woes and I can’t get it fixed today or early enough tomoz so I can’t make it. 🙁

Very, very clean 97 Hiace LWB with genuine 150k miles, normally aspirated 2.4 diesel here …cost me £1600 a couple of months ago with 2 new front tyres, leccy windows, Yale deadlocks on every door, remote central locking, taxed to March ’12 and MOTd for 1 year.

Costs ~£80 at 138.9 / litre (about 13 gallons) to drive 450 miles of mixed but mainly steady 65mph motorway driving = 34ish MPG.

I can’t see it needing £1800 spending on maintenance in the next 5 years never mind per year. I estimate £100 oil and filter service every 20k miles, so that’s 1 per year, timing belt every 60k – once every three years but next due in 30k, plus brake pads, brake shoes, tyres and other consumables.

I hope it’ll be worth £1200 in two years time with another 35-40k on the clock.

It’s as slow as treacle but I kind of like that.

It needs some work doing to insulate and soundproof the back as there’s no bulkhead, but with just two seats up front it’s ace as I don’t need to leave the van to get into the back.

Yeah Derek, Rusholme is generally poor but there is its ‘spectacle’ and there are at least 2 good places left to eat, Sanam and Punjab Tandoori.

Evening beers – Peveril of the Peak & Britons Protection & Rain bar if you want something authentic (and all 3 are close to each other), Corbieres (it’s down some stairs) off the side of St Annes Square & The Temple on Oxford Street (it’s also down some stairs, used to be a public convenience – good sounds usually) are both interesting and then there’s the Northern Quarter if you fancy something overpriced.

Sanam sweethouse on Wilmslow Road in Rusholme is, IMO, the best curry in Rusholme so is deffo worth a trip. I believe the Rajdoot on Albert Square is also a good curry but I’ve never been.

The Cornerhouse is brilliant & does decent food and beer – they do a ‘Reel deal’ one night of the week, Tues I think, so you can have Pizza, drink and film for £12.

In my experience I receive lots more social engagement from green laners than I do from ramblers. It often seems that ramblers want to set themselves in opposition to anyone who isn’t doing what they are doing.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a sharp comment from a green laner, but I’ve had lots of “ding a ling where’s your bell” type comments from walkers, despite the fact that I usually hail them with a ‘hi there’ as I approach at a pace designed to not cause alarm.

We all let ourselves down from time to time, and unfortunately we are usually judged by the worst actions of our peers.

You always get more of what you focus on, so just live and let live and be respectful to others.

Saw it last night. I enjoyed its pace and the lack of senseless dialogue that often accompanies this ‘type’ of film. First half quite different to second half but in a very good and contrasting way.

    Good soundtrack too.

Kind of reminded me of a western, something with Clint playing an honourable but violent and ruthless man.

    I love my Helius.

Strong like bull, pedals and climbs very well, can descend much faster than I, has adjustable rear travel, weighs 30ish lbs. Current ones have a slacker head angle to mine, but mine was happy on light DTSwiss 150 forks until I upped the travel to 160 coil Lyriks and it’s now very happy.

    It’s most definitely a one-bike-to-do-it-all.

If you’re ever in the Peak give me a shout and you can have a go; mail in profile. It’s a large by the way, 605 effective top tube.

Elfin – I have a very good condition, hardly used D200 body that I can sell you at a good price. I’ve been procrastinating about selling it for ages as it was bought on an ‘I want to get into photography’ whim and I just never found the time. I’ll even throw in some Cokin filters.

Email in profile if you want to discuss.

    Cheers,
    Iain.

Most unfortunate soundtrack in all ways; the singing is just overwrought r’n’b gash, and the Ducati has been neutered to the sound of an asthmatic Honda 250 Super Dream FFS!

Any other nerds familiar with the sound of a 70s desmodromic v-twin played through a set of Conti pipes will know what I mean.

    Fail.

Interesting study by Unicef just published. Basically children in countries that have a less consumer focused culture than the UK are happier because they have more social interaction with their parents and peers; kids need social activities not electronic gubbins.

Not making any judgements on the OP as a parent, or anybody else for that matter, just saying.

I’d say 5 & 6 is too young and possibly sets a hard to reach precedent for your children’s future gift expectations.

    I don’t have kids.

I was looking at those Tevas in 18Bikes last weekend, they seem well made but the tongue and lace area is just like what you’d see on skate trainers so I can’t see them being particularly great in the rain, but they’ll be fab for dry to lightly moist rides though. Stiff sole too.

VW LT MWB with a hi-roof or MB Sprinter MWB with a hi-roof are both easily within budget. There are SWB models too if length isn’t his thing. Both are suitable candidates for camper conversion; loads of space & most folk can stand up in the back. OK, the MWB models are a wee bit long at 5.5mtrs but they should both return high 30s on the motorway and are both renowned for their reliability. The Merc has the advantage of a chain driven cam so there’s no belt to change. Some people say the VWs are less likely to have been thrashed, but I don’t know why that would be. Sprinters are known as quick vans though so maybe that’s where that comes from.

Or if your mate wants bullet-proof reliability it has to be a Hiace but, IMO, they’re an odd size/shape. Well known for their robustness, there are plenty around with north of 300k miles on the clock and running fine.

I suppose if the parent/guardian has been somehow complicit in the offences carried out, for example by being highly irresponsible in their attitude towards the offender’s discipline and upbringing, and they have signed a tenancy agreement and are now in breach of that agreement then I could almost, in very clear and extreme cases, see a justification for eviction, even more so if the family is already known to the authorities.

Whether that’s the case here I don’t know but it feels quite arbitrary in its application and very wrong to me to force people out of their homes in what appears to be a vengeful & vindictive way.

I’m not amazed by it, simple economic decision made in these tough times?

The benefits of sports team sponsorship, in my estimation, are probably hard to quantify and a frivolity that gets pared back when business is tough.

Sky will want Cav in their paddock, surely.

This sounds like fun and I’d love a guided ride at Rivington.

It’d be nice to catch up with some of the Pootle alumni too as I missed out on Tons’ Delamere ride.
