Thanks. Can’t find any info online. Picked up a full set including rotors from CRC for £196 in the sale last week. Bit of a drunken purchase but they look pretty good !

Well I ordered a set from CRC, who were selling pairs for £196 including rotors. Back up to £300 now though. The item description was non existent as was the photo, so I’m still not sure what’s going to turn up!

Thanks guys, all reviews I’ve read are pretty good. I’ve found a set for under £200 which seems a good deal.

Did it last year for the first time and ‘lucky’ to get entry again this year. Better start building up the miles!

Amen Brother! My M520 pedals have covered over 2000 miles and have only seen the occasional squirt with GT85 and perhaps a drop of oil on the springs. Function just as well as the day I bought them!

Breadcrumb mode is great and doesn’t take much getting used to.

Navigated from Blackpool to Paris using a Garmin 200.

Do they have to be 15mm? I picked up some of SID xx recently for a good price:

Thanks Tebbalot. That’s a nice Garmin 500 with cadence sensor and premium heart rate strap on order now!

I did it last year for the first time. Thoroughly enjoyed it and was glad that I’d done a decent amount of training for it, which meant I could enjoy the ride. I really wouldn’t want to do it on minimal training.

As said above you need to include a lot of hills in your training. Most of my rides leading up to the Fred had around 1000ft of ascent per 10 miles and I was getting up to 80 and 90 milers in the preceeding month or two.

Hardknott after 0 miles would be hard enough but after 100 is frankly ridiculous. A great feeling when you make it up without stopping though. I’d say about 80% of people walk at least some of it. There are many climbs on the route though – I remember Honister being particularly nasty!

Sora has been 9 speed for years. The upgrade to Sora this year is that they’ve ditched the horrible little thumb shifter for down-shifting. They now have the same setup as Tiagra and above.

I’d be tempted to wait for the Wahoo Kickr.

OK I need a yardstick – how does it compare in difficulty to the Fred Whitton?

I entered last night. I think we may have broken the web site – it was horrendous!

Now to start thinking about training…

Good effort, a great feeling the first time you break 100 miles. As above I’m afraid to say that 2000m over 100 miles isn’t massively hilly. As a guide I would say 1000ft per 10 miles is a good benchmark, which is about 3000m per 100 miles.

Quite tempted to do the 70 mile route. Weather forecast seems reasonable too !

CF SLX road bike is definitely on my “must buy” list for next year. Lovely!

That’s horrific but I don’t quite understand the cycling angle? He was riding a bike but was that the motivating factor? Surely the story should just be “man attacked”…

Very personal choice based on fitness and what kind of hills you ride. I had 12-25 originally but changed to a 12-27 for the Fred Whitton ride. Those two teeth make quite a difference!

Unless you are frequently riding steep stuff (more than 15%) then 12-25 should suffice, but again it’s very much a personal choice.

Didn’t have any flicking on mine. It stays fixed on whatever page you set it to. The only annoying feature is when you come to a stop and the map zooms out until you start moving again. We rode in darkness a couple of times and the backlit screen worked a treat.

All in all it was excellent. We had iPhone/HTC for when we needed to double check a direction, but 99% was done directly from the 200.

Don’t discount the Garmin 200 so quickly. We recently rode from Blackpool to Paris using a pre-loaded route on a 200.

I use JS Insurance when I go paragliding. Always pretty cheap:

The P7 body diameter looks to be about 25mm. Can’t measur exact as I don’t have vernier callipers.

No experience of cycling there, but I did spend a couple of days on Harris/Lewis a couple of years back. Absolutely stunning, and from memory the roads were pretty quiet even during the summer.

Make sure you visit Luskentyre beach. Stunning.

Yes, it seems I was well and truly shafted, although unintentionally.

I shall point my mate to this thread so he can plan a better route if I ever visit again.

It was a circular route heading counter-clockwise towards Sandy, and back down through Dunstable.

I’m based in West Yorkshire, so I’m probably spoilt by the roads around here to be honest.
