tony24 – not thought about carbon, don’t really fancy it, will it really handle rock strikes?

kaesae, sometimes (Post Office thread) I struggle to understand you, then others like now I very much agree wiht your POV. Of course same as almost any drug it will work better for some than others. For musucalar pain for me it works, however if you come off your bike and cut your head open I don’t think it will have much affect. If it works great, if not don’t use it but you can be certain it is far less harmful to mind and body than a myriad of legal prescription drugs that make some well placed people a LOT of money.

Not me but we were in Spain with Switchbacks, can’t remember the name of the trail but we went along a rocky trail with a couple of switchbacks then a rocky trail with sheer drop to the left, negotiated it all OK then sped off at the end of it. This led us onto a fireroad, as my brother took the corner he overcooked it and went off the edge. When he didn’t follow us we went back and found him hanging off the edge wiht his bike on top of him. Stuck about 5 ft down, wedged in a tree with maybe a 100ft drop straight below. He remained absolutley calm throughout the whole thing whilst we lowered Steve down by his legs to pull the bike then him back up. I would have s**t myself, I almost did anyway trying to get him out of the tree.
He told us not to tell his wife as she would never let him go with us again!

I was in Spain with Switchbacks. My mate was on his 140MM Carbon Mojo. Hit a rock. Hole in frame. My Heckler survived.
Another friend swapped his old Whyte 146 for a Cannondale Mojo recently. He jumps well! Broke the Mojo frame pretty quickly. A lot more of my riding friends ride Alu as opposed to Carbon but a much higher precentage break their carbon frames. (Although I did crack my E5)
I have no doubt you can scientifically prove that carbon is stronger than alu but in the real world in my limited expericnce carbon breaks more than alu. So far you can’t tempt me to buy a carbon frame (Although I have ridden a Whyte 146 and it is an awesome bike)

@loum, true, I personally disagree with US (and often UK) military foreign policy and I’m sure there are plenty of bad eggs in the US forces (same as any army or to be fair any large group of people)
I think my point was some people generalise about the US yet if others were to do so about say French/Chinese/Indians/Jamaicans it would be construed as racist by the very people who make the generalisations. (Sorry if that isn’t clear but end of lunch now, best I go do some work) Might be back later if I get chance as I find this thread quite interesting

Compared to ours who are all good chaps?

@ Too Tall, no certainly not, I didn’t want to insinuate that. We have some very dodgy people here as well but I believe over there they have more influence, definatley more power and often use religion to justify their views. Not saying I’m right, just the impression I get which gives me my point of view.

I don’t want to come across as “pro American”, I’m not, I think some their far right politicans are amongst the most despicable people on the planet. BUT you can’t just criticise a nation – if you do IMHO it comes across as racist.

Is this thread rascist? You cannot tar a whole race becuase of the actions of a few! If you can then others could well see us as a bunch of warmongering child molesting crazy football hooligans.
I work for a small US company, have been there many times and have some good friends over there, mainly in Michigan and Seattle. The mountain bikers I met in San Diego were a great bunch, doing lots of charity work.
I think most of their politicians are totally corrupt (name somewhere they aren’t?!) and there are some crazy rednecks, religious zealots etc. I also think LA is one of the worst cities I ahve ever visited and second only to Kingston Jamaica as to how unsafe I felt there. Same as many countries there are good and bad. Rules, places and people. Please don’t tar all Americans as bad, if you do you it is possible you portray yourself as an ignorant racist

You have to put jam on the scone first then cream. If you put a proper amount of cream on then try to add a bit of jam it can get messy.

FWIW the few people I have met from on here I have found them to be pleasant without exception. I have also discovered a few people I ride with lurking under alias’s then confessing their forum names to me during conversations!

I’m with toys19 and TJ on this, where countries have legalized/de criminalised there have been positive reductions in crime (Portugal / Switzerland and small scale experiments here) We have been fighting the “war on drugs” for 30-40 years and got nowhere, isn’t it time to try something different? It would probaby reduce crime, the prison population and possibly even the number of addicts. The long term benefits to society could be immeasurable (Taliban finances through opium production affected, safer streets, BILLIONS of ££’s of our taxes saved and put to better use improving society) Why not try it??

TJ – I made the helmet comment tongue in cheek 😉 It’s all about individual opinions and your own risk assessment so I can’t say whether she is right or wrong especially as a non climber. As for biking with a kid on a backpack, I mean’t MTB’ing. I fall off. Regularly. I don’t want to squash my child or have him/her fall and get a serious injury and have to live with it. That’s my choice and belief. When ours were younger we wouldn’t take them out in the trailer unless on the road unless there was an adult (normally me) behind the trailer. Like GrahamS said she could be doing far worse things but to me it’s too dangerous to consider. They don’t cycle on the road yet (not taken cycling proficiency) and there are enough canal paths / cycle routes / forst trails for me to decide it’s not worth taking that risk.
    EDIT
I have just been reminded by my wife that I did have my daughter in a “backpack” on a fireroad so I’m guilty of that as well! And my little ones always wear helmets 😆 😉

I read this thread with interest as the father of two young kids (3 & 4)
I have never climbed so cannot comment on the safety aspect however to me it seems a crazy and potentially risky stunt, especially if she is not that experienced. My wife has climbed, when I showed her the pic her first retort was “crazy”. I love to take my kids outdoors, walking, pedalling, they even climb some trees! BUT, in terms I can relate to no way would I ever strap my kid to my back and take him/her out biking with me. Helmet or no helmet 😉

I wouldn’t say I’m loyal as I will buy others but fabourites so far:
Bikes – Whyte (19 is best hardtail I’ve ridden, test rode T120 and 146 and WANT)
Tyres – Maxxis (just like them) & Specialised (VFM)
Headsets & hubs – Hope (last for ever, cheaper than CK and english! Like the clicky noise)
Nightlights – Exposure – no cables

Disagree there Northwind, at least in my limited experience – one of my best mates, lovely bloke, funny, kind and generous, coke turned him into a right arrogant t**t and nearly cost him his relationship. Luckily he gave up (with help) before it destroyed him.

Just think if all the junkies could get heroin on prescription (or by a.n.other gov’t approved method) then they wouldn’t need to rob, steal and generally cause crimes against society to get a fix. Of course there would still be junkies committing crimes just as non junkies do but the amount we would save on crime prevention and prosecution would be massive.

Just ordered an Edwin Jagger razor, Derby and Feather blades, Taylor of Bond St badger brush and shave cream from Shaving shack. I have to say after shopping around their service and response to questions was great, MUCH better than any of their competiton. Just hope the kit works nicely as it cost £50, but then gillette razors are crazy money (I recently started with a cheap Boots DE and do ocasionally nick myself but getting better)

I test rode a Whyte 146 a couple of weeks ago whilst out with the LBS. Awesome ride, light as hell but great pointing down. I won’t buy one as they are carbon and carbon frames break easier than alloy IME. And I can’t afford one. But if someone were to give me one I could learn to live with the carbon 🙂

I’ve just started with a DE after reading various threads on here. I have starte with a cheap Boots DE. So far had maybe 6 shaves. It is easier to nick yourself but so far only one proper bleeding session. I think I will get a decent one once my blades run out. Or maybe in the January sales.
Question for regular DE shavers – how many shaves do you get with each blade?

I have to admit the dog we ride with is a sheepdog collie, black and white, same as the dog that I had problems with. FWIW she is one of the nicest family dogs I have ever met, does what she is told and is great with my little ones (3 & 4 years old)
I guess it’s all in the training

Yeah I think I should have exlpained to them that the dog should be on a lead. Definatley will next time. I cycle up there a lot and have never seen them or the dog before.
