Get a Campag hub, then when you use your Hope it'll seem insignificant. My Campag freehub scares the sh*t out of pedestrians, very useful.

myfatherwasawolf – have you been pi$$ing in our lake, it's looking a dodgy colour. p.s. double 'r' in referred, you sonofabitch.

I've always spelt it with a single 'r', therefore it is corrrect. I use the spare 'r' in other places. And yes, I have been pissing in your lake.

I always remember being told that the name 'Peak' comes from the Anglo Saxon Pecsaetan tribe – and therefore it had to be the 'Peak', not the 'Peaks'. However, it turns out that Pecsaetan means 'Peaklanders': people who lived in the land of peaks. Or peak, I'm not sure. I'm from the Peak District and always called it the Peaks. Anyway, the Pecsaetan people left when parking became a real problem, horses and carts all over the place.

I did once go camping in the Lake District, or the Lake, as it's commonly refered to:

My sons 10th birthday pressie and the birds and the bees

Kill two birds with one stone, I've heard the area around the Star and Garter behind Piccadilly train station in Manchester's a good place to start. 😆

It's a land slip because it was oversteepened. Probably by glacial processes, albiet not a ****-off glacier en-route to Castleton.. The Mam Tor Sandstones slipped on the impermeable-ish Edale Shales which acted as a lubricated slip surface. My car slipped on ice at the side of the road on the way to the Mam Tor car park, which confuses matters considerably.

'tis true that most of the ice went round the edges. I seem to remember a big sub-glacial channel near Whaley Bridge. Ice did cut across the western part of the White Peak too, depositing lots of boulder clay near and damming the Derwent to form a glacial lake. Bit wishy-washy on this subject I'm afriad. I could give you more accurate information about the Carboniferous history of the Peak(s) should any of you have trouble sleeping.
In summary, due to the various geological processes, and a couple of rather large dams, car parking is difficult 😆

    It's not a glacial landscape.

    </pedant>

Much of the Peak District scenery has been shaped by glacial processes, think of the glacially oversteepened face of Mam Tor, or the classic U-shaped glacial valley of the River Alport. Boulder clay can be found pretty much everywhere and it was probably glacial run-off that widened many of the fissures/caves in the limestone and widened, for example, Winnats Pass.

For the 'must be the same height' people, do you also measure your position behind the BB and length of reach in that position?

    No.

I'd love to perfect the cyclocross mount and dismount it looks cool but last time I tried running mounting I squashed my plums!

Ha! although I did once have this technique down to a fine art I do remember a National Trophy cross race at Woodbank in Stockport where I landed perfectly on one unlucky plum that must have broken free during a run-up. **** me that hurt, and it hurts now just thinking about it 15 years later! 😆

Yes (on mtb, road and cx-racing). The only time I haven't is a few years spent racing dual and doing dirt jumping where a lower saddle is a necessity. I also never stop to lower my saddle no matter what the terrain.

I like the peaks, but there are no corners!

That's right. No corners in the Peak District. Nothing to see here. 😉

I can't believe they even attempted this without advice from strangers on the internet, and, at the very least, attending a skills course with Jedi 😉

    Great videos thanks!

for all but a tiny percentage of riders there will always be people capable of a lot more on the same bike as you – so my guess is that we are all 'overbiked'. We should give up and watch TV.

Somebody with your obvious inability to make decisions is probably not best suited to climbing. I'd go for a ride, maybe along a disused railway line. Nice and safe, no thinking for yourself required. 😉

Going to London from Menston (just north of Leeds) tomorrow. Bit last minute for a meeting. TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY TWO POUNDS SEVENTY PENCE. That does include the tube ticket though 😐

(ok – not a family trip, just thought I'd blurt it out cos it's insane)

Could Crikey have missed the point any more spectacularly?

Plenty of places in the British Isles, yes even in tame old England, where you could lie around unable to move, with no phone signal, without seeing anybody for quite a while. The OP asked what measures people took to mitigate for this, not whether Crikey was a big tough man who would never find himself in such a predicament!

My daughter does her turds standing up. Better visibility to escape predation.

Likes a bit of peace and quiet though. Trots off and comes back all nice and smelly with red cheeks. I think however that this works better with the looser stool.

I think I know her – did she study in Leeds? 😆

    All the above, plus:

Try to remove a branch from front wheel during a descent in a cross race. Ouch.

Ride a fixed wheel bike wearing baggy jeans, not tucked into sock or rolled up. Cue one legged jeans and messed up face.

Clip into spd backwards whilst chatting at the top of a hill. Had to rip the fecker off and ride cleat-less.

Attempt very large drop-off outside Navigation in Buxworth after quite a few pints. Cue broken XT bb and large scar in back of leg.

Oh well, you live and, in my case, don't learn!

Anyone over 12 would look a right **** on a folding scooter.

Funny, that's what most of the population think about adults riding mountain bikes. Who give's a **** what people think if it's fun? (and in this case practical).

Flats are great for jumping/DH/Dual etc and I used them a lot during that particular time of my life. Xc-wise flats are next to useless downhill with your saddle at full height, you'll end up bouncing around on your balls. That means you have to stop and faff lowering your saddle (I know plenty of people do this anyway), I also find spds are far better on technical flats and climbs.

So, in summary, both are good at different things, but for all-round riding I choose spds. As someone up there ^^ said, try both.

I commute just about everyday, 20 miles round trip, and have commuted by bike since primary school over 20 years ago. What pisses me off is cyclists sat in the middle of the lane forcing me to join the angry cars trying to get around their fat arses. Muppets – learn to ride!

That said – these guys can be useful for holding up all the traffic at junctions giving me a nice empty road.

Seriously though – look ahead and accept that cars are going to turn in front of you, women are going to step off the kerb directly in front of you, and 'lads' are going to jump in front of you in some macho display to their mates. In traffic jams people walk between cars, and buses sometimes open their doors. Truck drivers can never see you. Nobody is expecting you to be there. Accept these facts and you should be ok!

I've eaten many a burger king in my life, and yesterday I had some cookies and a flapjack BEFORE my lunch, and I'm slim as you like…..

On the outside at least. How are your arteries?

    That's my worry anyway!

I would imagine the reason (or one of the reasons) that hours have not decreased is the rise in admin/bureaucracy/health and safety etc – there seem to be new roles in these areas appearing all the time, at the expense of people doing the 'real work' whatever that is… and those people in non-admin jobs are being given more and more admin to do. We are very busy keeping ourselves very busy.

I'd be happy with 21 hours a week though!

    Thanks so far…

I have technical interviews and a technical presentation to give etc, and the job is at an industry scientific research centre.

From what I have heard it will just be psychometric tests (not verbal/numeric reasoning) – but for 2.5 hours? It has to be more than multiple choice questions?

You wanna see the dirty looks I get riding the boulder drop with my pannier'ed up, high-posted, alfine'd on-one. I'm the man me 😉

Agree with the point above – why miss out that bit of red to get to the descent? One of the best bits imo.

1466 miles since 1st Jan, including turbo trainer but that only accounts for 151, virtually all rest done off road and singlespeed.

220 miles a week offroad in winter conditions? I take it you meant 1st Jan 2009? 😉

Typical STW response to plea for help on this thread. The OP 'must' be doing it wrong because I/my mate/etc has done this blah blah.

So you think you know best 'cos you've worked in a shop for 10 years? I bet you've still got poor tyre fitting technique – not that it matters when you're sat on your arse eating pies and moaning at the computer screen. Learn to fit tyres and MTFU southerner. Now that'd be a typical STW response 😆

If you drove from Lands End to John O Groats (874 miles) at 80 mph it'd take ~11 hours. If you did it at 70 it'd take ~12.5 hours. That's a 1.5 hour saving. There is no point to this post. Thanks.

Of course it is but I was talking within the context of the thread, which is largely about the lack of freedom due to parental worries about H&S etc, not the current financial situation, or how we may be better off now than in the post-war years…. yawn.
