I once zip tied my cassette to the spokes. That worked but only for a few miles – just don’t forget to keep pedaling…. I suspect with maybe three zip ties you could make it further. New hub time.

In a previous life as a bike mechanic at the long-since-gone Neil Walton Cycles in Didsbury, I was wiring up a rear mech but was interrupted by a phone call, then a couple of customers. Went back in and continued to attach the cable to the rear v-brake…. Indexed braking! 😳

Fancied a run whilst in the uk but had forgotten my shoes. Got a set of these for £30 and ran 16 miles round Rutland Water yesterday in them, seemed ok – my normal brand is Brooks. Nice and grippy and seemed stable.

    Should have said – usually 4 or 5 a year I guess.

I used to, up until I was about 24. Exact same symptoms, would completely paralyse me, just had to sit there holding my head for hours or even days. Then one day I had some Pepsi max and my whole world turned upside down. Immediately stopped drinking sugar free drinks, worth a try I thought…. Not had a migraine for the last 12 years. Don’t know which ingredient it was but it worked for me.

Hmmm 5 hours for me, and my thesis had 2 published papers. Most of that time was my Canadian external just being incredibly excited about geology. At my expense. In the end I just had a short list of spelling and grammatical corrections from my internal.

Preparation consisted of lying on the sofa the day before, reading the first page then deciding to do a massive ride in the snowy Yorkshire Dales instead. I was already doing a postdoc in a similar area so was up-to-speed enough.

    Never used ‘Dr’ either 😀

Cycling down a nice quiet road near Castley (near Pool-in-Wharfedale, north of Leeds), I knew there was an illegal camp at the side of the river, by the road. As I approached saw a bunch of kids messing about and a bunch of adults on deck chairs drinking. Anyway, as I drew level with the camp the kids threw a load of long chains into the road, holding the other end and started to flick them up. I came a cropper as the kids roared about laughing and the adults gave me steely-eyed 'looks'. So I got on my bike and got going…. new bar tape and ripped saddle thanks. Scum!

I think it might be a case of getting the maps and out and exploring – which is fine by me! You wouldn't be jealous if you were in the middle of the moving chaos that I'm in (that's why I'm on STW obviously) 😆

When I was about 17 I got stopped by the police whilst they checked my bike out. It was a Giant Cadex 980c (carbon fibre road bike) with look pedals. I was wearing a German army jacket, ripped jeans and All-Stars 😆

I must admit RO has a point I too hate large group rides four is enough and you may get to see and hear the wildlife if there are not loads of you which is one of the points of enjoying the great outdoors

    So disc brakes yes
    Mass rides no

    Totally agree

I go riding to get away from people, so massive group rides are my idea of hell. (Yes I am an antisocial f**ker)

    Also totally agree!

MFWAW, Antisocial F**ker with disc brakes 😆

At least you got to ride – best week of the year so far & i'm working overtime all week plus Saturday

That's nothing. I've got mumps! MUMPS at my age FFS (32). Combined with the fact I'm moving to Norway next Friday and have a lot to finish at work, it's a bit of a shitter to say the least.

Think I've got 8, in yellow to compliment my green on-one…. 😆

sub 25 mins for 5 miles suggests you are one of the quickest runners in the country, certainly elite level. I couldn't run one sub five minute mile! One day…

As a semi-interesting side note, I did my first ever mountain bike race at Brabyns Park, It was 1990, I was 13 and I came last 😆

Easy doubles = Bruntwood BMX track Cheadle. used to be a bunch of dirt jumps built around the 'official' track too, I haven't been there for quite a while though (like at least 6 years).

We built a bunch of dirt jumps near Jacksons Bridge (by the mersey near Chorlton), but that was ten years ago – I don't know if they've been maintained since.

But my mate can roll down slopes I feel it's safer to jump off – so his slope is my drop?

    I think you're talking about a 'slop' 😆

What i find strange is that you feel the need to tell the world of your decision? we're not interested.

Well if no one on here told the (singletrack)world what they were thinking the forum would be empty. The OP's entitled to his opinion and all-in-all this thread has been 'interesting' and worthwhile 😆

My worst 'bonk' was after a massive ride into the Peak, I was in Buxton and still had to ride over the Cat & Fiddle to Macclesfield (a not inconsiderable stretch of hilly road). I walked into a petrol station, fell over pulling a bunch of stuff with me, bought a packet of choclate Hob Nobs and 2 litres of coke (brain processes not operating normally). I ate and drank the lot and rode home. I was then very ill for a week. 😆

Well I chose Centaur because I like the way Ergopowers work, I like the carbon levers and mechs, and I like the look of the chainset. And brakes. basically I like the look of Centaur 😆

The Khamsins are cheap and cheerful, although the bearings are in need of a good service after 9 months.

Another idea might be to replace any potential personalities with Indurain-style robots. That’d liven things up a bit, and make for safe family viewing.

I saw a cyclist give 'the finger' to a motorist who had the audacity to beep his horn at him for riding a red light and swerving to avoid a pedestrian.

Pretty sure this thing would never have happened without Cav setting the precedence. I have never seen behaviour like this in all my time, completely outrageous. Lock him up I say.

I've got a Sportive with Centaur and Khamsins. Brilliant bike for the money – in fact brilliant bike full stop. I'm 5'11" and ride a Large, I have long legs mind (34"), and it works out perfectly. Had it about 9 months now and still love every ride on it.

    And the service was excellent!

You've got to consider the properties of the cup though. The first will heat the cup up to a higer temp and this will make all the difference.. I'll go for option 2.

Your argument stands up as long as nobody on a bike worth the same or less than yours ever overtakes you.

My bikes used to be lower-end and usually were completely knackered. Then I got a good job, more cash, a family and much less time to ride… guess what happened? 😆

Always loved the classic Mountain Goat Whiskeytown Racer:

And now they've started making them again, with a custom paint option, I am rather tempted:

Good film and good answer Klunkerbill!

My favourite is the semi-retro (maybe full retro now?) Chainsmoke with Shaun Palmer and others. Good mix of DH & XC and great music (in my opinion – Downset, Shelter and stuff). The shot of Palmer being dropped by a helicopter at the top of a long singletrack descent, as the opening riff to 'Empower' starts sends shivers down my spine! 😀

    [not bragging]

I won the road national hillclimb champs as a junior on a 531c cross bike, with purple Ringle qrs no less! Often great for closed cicuits/crits as they generally have a slightly higher BB (more ground clearance for cornering).

Used to commute to college in Marple, from Cheadle (about 8 miles I think) on a 1950's Hercules, with 3-speed Hercumatic gears, and rod brakes on steel rims. Made me the man I am today (i.e., fecked knees, and terrified of hills). 😆

Ah, I was glad to see this thread, having just walked in the office from a trip to Durham's passport & identity offices.

Did the check and send thing in time for a trip to the US tomorrow, phoned yesterday to see where it was – still awaiting processing – so had to pay for them to go and get it by courier and 'upgrade' to fast-track service. Then, as it missed the post, I had a little jaunt from Leeds to Durham this morning. Total cost of all that faff, plus a couple of pastries to make me feel better, just over £200! Luckily my ESTA went through in a couple of seconds – that was the next worry!
