I’ll never go back to JE James in Sheffield after my experience looking for a bike for my 5 year-old son. The woman who served us couldn’t have been less helpful if she’d tried.

I had to ask her if she could possibly bother to get the bike off the display so he could sit on it, which she did after rolling her eyes like it was all too much trouble. Then, when the seat was a bit too low I asked her if she would mind adjusting it so he could try it for size. She sighed loudly and went to get a spanner, which she then gave to ME to make the adjustment.

Anyway, as soon as he’d sat on it and was off looking at another one (as 5 year-olds do), she immediately dropped the seat and put it back on the display and walked away. My son inevitably came back wanting to sit on the bike again, at which point we decided we’d had enough of being treated like an annoyance and took a tearful little boy out of the shop to look elsewhere.

I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever been made to feel so angry at customer ‘service’ in my life before, and I certainly won’t consider them when I spend 2-3 grand on a new full-susser next year.

Same problem for me too – I’m on Google Chrome.

    @patriotpro

What angle is it, and does it fit an oversized 31.8 bar? And most importantly, what colour is it…? :)

I had a creak at the weekend that was absolutely definitely no doubt coming from the front of the bike around the forks. Turns out it was some grit in the seatpost clamp…

    Ah, here you go:

Testament to its versatility, you can ride the Revolution Courier Race stripped down and unadorned. However if you want to fit full-length mudguards and a rear rack, you will be pleased to discover that the bike’s eyeletted seat stays and dropouts will take them.

I haven’t put one on mine, but I think the relevant holes etc are already there for mudguards/rack etc.

I have the 2011 model of this:

…I love it. Great value bike, and he/she will have £70 left over to buy you a load of beers to thank you for your recommendation.

Useful replies, ta very much. I’ve previously read the update on Ride Sheffield, and that was what prompted me to ask the question in the first place. What’s the current legality of riding on there, anyone know? Talk of permissive bridleways suggests that riding on there at the moment, whilst not officially sanctioned, is largely tolerated… or am I hopelessly wide of the mark?

Is it actually worth the effort for a change of scene from my current riding round Totley Moor (which it conveniently links to), Blacka Moor etc? I’m not expecting any riding of the calibre of Blacka, but just wondered if it provided a decent bit of extra cross-country that I’ve not done before.

Just wish they’d get their website sorted now…

Service is spot on and they’re a very friendly bunch. I bought my bike from them just over a year ago and they’ve always looked after me whenever I’ve had any issues or needed advice.

I use them all the time as I live just down the road. What do you want to know?

I bought some Nobby Nics too – half the price of the UK sellers, and they arrived in two days. Definitely recommended.

I got eaten alive on Blacka Moor near Sheffield last night while fixing a puncture – legs look like a dot to dot puzzle today. Colleague at work recommended Avon Skin So Soft as an insect repellent when she saw the state of me this morning.

Last time I went to JE James I was looking for a bike with my five year-old son, and the woman we dealt with couldn’t have been less helpful. Everything was just far too much trouble for her, I’ll never go back.

Bike Tree near Dore, on the other hand, are fantastic. I highly recommend them.

I commute by bike every day in Sheffield, and the simple answer is there is no simple answer. You need to judge every situation and junction etc as you come across it. Take it extra cautious to start with, confidence and judgement skills rapidly improve with experience! Three things: never lose concentration, always anticipate the worst, and if you think a manouevre might be risky don’t do it. But it’s great fun… I absolutely love my 5 mile each-way commute.

Tried to get a lock outdoors. Latest version of all those apps, and I also have GPS Test installed too – doesn’t seem to help. Think the hard reset is the next step once I’ve backed the phone up although any other suggestions gratefully received in the meantime…

Thanks for the replies – I ordered the Rebas from On One/Planet X in the end. Should be getting em today, so no doubt I’ll be back on here soon asking for fitting and setup advice! Cheers.

Thanks for your feedback tracknicko. I haven’t entirely discounted going, but there’s no denying that the timing makes it a far more difficult prospect than it needed to be when the likelihood is that my son will be bored after an hour when the novelty of the fast bikes has worn off, and he wants to go home to watch Scooby Doo.

Must say I fancied this, was thinking of taking my 5 year-old son too. However it’s on a Saturday afternoon and I live the wrong side of the city to be messing around trying to get past Hillsborough when Sheffield Wednesday are playing at home. Seems like poor planning date-wise. Shame cos I would have gone otherwise.

In answer to the question, Devil’s Elbow is a bridleway down Blacka Moor on the southwestern edge of Sheffield.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice. I’ve ordered some Superstar Nanos, and will also try and improve the technique – must learn to relax more I think! Does anyone use shin guards with these type of pedals, or am I just being a wuss?!

Thanks, what am I looking for if I take it apart? And should I be concerned that it says ‘Do not disassemble’ round the outside?! :-)

6 replies in 20 minutes! Top service folks, much appreciated. Will put it down to experience and avoid making the same mistake again. Thanks everyone
