Get yourself a nice Volvo V70

I have a 53 plate diesel auto xc70 (4wd version) with nearly a quarter of a million miles on it and it’s a Cat C but she is a beauty in every way!

Drive it. Check for following if you want to be picky:

    1) drive shafts can go approx 100k. Make sure no front end vibration at speeds under load or acceleration. nSF usually go first.

    2) they can sometimes be smoky (especially when cold) so check it isnt too smokey sl

    3) make sure all gear changes are slick and the clutch pedal isn’t available too heavy. original clutches van show wear from towards 100k depending on how they’ve been driven. Make sure it doesn’t slip in 2nd or third under load

If you are buying from a trader the car SHOULD be ok, it helps to buy from a decent person in the trade and not a desperado with a coke n hookers / gambling etc habit

Good cars. Torquey 6 speed engines and proven reliability

I sell used cars for a living (kriss akabussi laugh) and recently got traded in a 2008 T5 kombi (one seat in the back / tinted side windows / carpet lined in back) with only 106k miles on it, but rough bodywork – poor previous repairs. It drives good and I have just replaced the timing belt / water pump.

Was very excited when took it in as I have had a renaissance in MTBing (did mostly road previous) and have a habit of taking off for a night or two and sleeping in the back of vans (I have a 1984 T25 camper too) and MTBing (big mountain epics) Spent first night it in the Lakes a couple of weeks ago and the drive was a lot more stress free than in the old T25!

    Not fussed about the rough

Rossa, head passed the two Castlerigg campsites on the minor road and continue on this (very narrow road) passed the farm and the road ends. There are woods around this quiet area I am sure you could hammock.

Was down for the 60 miler.

I wonder if we will be grateful for the reduction! Saying that, looking a bit drier for Sunday but damage will be done to the terrain.

Looking forward to it. Heading down tomorrow afternoon and spending the night in the van. May stay over Sunday night and take in some fells on the Monday. Happy days. Love the lakes.

Trust me to have just replaced light Schwalbe MTB tyres with ultra sticky but heavier high roller 2’s. Going to be a grip fest on the tarmac bits but may be grateful for them on the looser bits, especially given the amount of rain this last few days

In or very near Arrochar MTB rides:

Ardgarten Loop (starting at Ardgarten) – 3 to 5hrs – lots of climbing – only very little technical stuff – steep rocky scramble land rover track bits

    Or

Glen Loin loop (starting in arrochar) – 2 – 3.5hrs – non technical landrover track mainly

    Enjoy

Ah, spooney green lane. That’ll get the pipes cleaned for peoples.

Will be a bit of a stramash everyone bottlenecking up there, a lot pushing, throw in jolly ramblers going up and down and it all adds up to a perfect Lakeland cocktail.

Any of you fine specimens riding it on a HT?

Fancy it with a carbon 29er as it’s the only tool I have.

    1) various ways, but download ‘Total Car Check’s app and put the reg in there

    2) either request the document reference number from the ‘green slip’ part of the logbook in advance from the person you are buying it from and tax it online beforehand (takes 2 mins), or take your phone and do this online before you drive car away

    3) green slip and keys. The seller is legally required to send completed V5 (with your details on it) to Swansea.

    Sounds like carburettor problems.

May need a clean / tune-up by an old school VW man.

    Beautiful thread.

I travel to the lakes for MTBing a few times a year and love the Skiddaw loop. Start from Keswick town to enjoy the slog up spooney green lane passed lattrig.

Beautiful beautiful ride. Long, hot day. Get back to Keswick and ride straight to the square orange for beer and food before back to camp for chill before hitting the town again. Boootiful!

I am currently using a 2003 Volvo XC70 estate, Cat D repaired, quarter of a million miles, 2.4 diesel auto, and it is easily the best car for the money I have ever driven.

Drive it. Like it. Buy it.

I sell cars and was impressed with a 59 plate Pug 3008 I recently sold. I used it for 3,000 miles and it ticks a lot of boxes. You could pick a decent one up for under 3k.

Citroen C5 estates and Pug 508 estates (basically the same car) are good for the money too.

Fav band over the last few years. Seen them 6 or 7 times, from pub type gig to performing race for space at Edinburgh’s usher hall as part of Edinburgh science week.

My favourite song is this relative rarity, only seen them play it live once. About a ice skating race in Friesland Holland https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=%23&ved=0ahUKEwjL5PSWwsXTAhWmL8AKHSczADEQwqsBCCEwAA&usg=AFQjCNF1sHlk2z9QIx28jtvfnGP_UlkifA

Don’t use the meathead who goes by the name of West Coast Builders / Joiners, he likes to veer his meathead chromedome and his Transit Connect van towards cyclists to give them a fright.

Chakaping, that was a nice article, so true. Something about all the comments after such tunes allows us to relate to them even though we may not have had the same direct experiences (although I reckon I did date and eventually marry one of the best looking ladies in my town – divorced now!)

The article makes me think of us, as old men, still sitting listening to this stuff on youtube and whether that will be the case. My answer is of course it is as I often think back to what someone said a couple of years ago to me……….WHEN WE GROW OLD IT IS ONLY OUR BODY THAT AGES, WE REMAIN THE SAME WITHIN

Who can forget the stunning opening to Pete Tong’s first Essential Mix album. This is up there with the best from the time

Remember listening to one of my big brother’s recordings of a Nick Warren Essential Mix from Radio 1. This stuck out and although I never Knew its name or heard it since, the harmony from this song would float in to my life every now and then. Two months ago I tracked it down and got it’s name. THOSE WERE THE DAYS!

As a side note, and a reflection of how society and music has changed, WTF HAS RADIO 1 BECOME! THE ESSENTIAL MIX STUFF WAS AT THE FRONT OF AN ENIGMATIC AND CUTTING EDGE YOOF/YOUNGISH ADULT CULTURE!

What you are not factoring in is that a cheap ebay panel will rot before a year up and ‘ruin’ a nice new car.

In bodywork, you get what you pay for in terms of quality of panels and time/care spent on the job.

And you say the ONLY costs are a panel and two hours labour? What about paint, sundries, electricity, etc? Easily another £150 at least
