You not been converted yet?

to yoga? Been to one workshop, really need to do something as I am the antithesis of flexible.

PT at the gym showing me kettle bell swings:

you’ve quite tight ham strings you should maybe stretch more often

😆

you getting a licence this year?

Have wanted one since I first saw it a year or more ago, may even be able to justify one when lease car goes in May…

I think the fixed souplesse thing, for me anyway, is because if you want to go fast on a fix you will bounce if you don’t quickly learn to smooth out your stroke 😯

But you’re right, you don’t need one to develop a smooth technique and it won’t magically give you one.

I now only use the fix for comuting and running around town. It was just on the rollers this week as I snapped the chain on my proper road bike on Saturday.

I got this a bit on the rollers on my fixie last night, figured it was from bouncing too much and the saddle on it being a mtb one and not really a great shape for me when in a road bike position.

Naranjada has scared me a bit now so I will defo put in a more concerted effort to smooth things out; the rollers are already helping with this – rollers+bouncing=scary!

Most of the stuff is hardly worn or doesn’t fit anymore

Take it to a charity shop instead where they can sell it on to make money to help others. eBay (and probably all these places popping up that will but your old clothes at ?£/kg) has really reduced the ammount of good quality stuff going to charity shops as people would rather make 50p profit for their old Bros t-shirt or Right Said Fred single than let a charity shop get £1 for it 🙁

The majority of the stuff that goes in charity clothing bins, as stated above, goes to rag men who pay per kilo and ship it off to Africa. Although I did see one the other day, either Barnados or Oxfam I think, that said the items do get distributed to their shops. If you take it to a shop and they deem it unsaleable (is that a word?) they will then bundle it up and at that point it goesto the ragman – there is more profit selling it through teh shops though.

Kona do the Kula Lisa in tiny sizes.

Women specific versions tend to be different geometry to the mens of similar size; the lisa has the same lenght TT as the 16″ mens.

I got this Six Moon Lunar Duo and a pair of these Low weight and TONS of space, can sit up comfortably – the only down side is it isn’t free standing, which sounds like it may have been a bit of a problem on a couple of nights on your Trans America tour but I’ve a couple of ideas to try out to fix that.
There are some videos on youtube and a guy that did a good, neutral comparison of this and the tarptent on his blog.

You can borrow mine if you want to have a look at it. I think the bill from parcelforce for tax etc was about £60 and I can’t remember what delivery was. I did have a bit of a problem with their system, something about it not correctly calculating the delivery charge, but it came very quickly once it was sorted. Although I guess you could avoid all that by getting it delivered to the US.

EDIT: I did a lot of searching before I decided on the Six Moon but couldn’t find anything that was as close to meeting all my criteria. It really is very spacious inside with good head height and generous porches on both sides. Quick to pitch too.

I’ll just add try to get one that you are somewhere in the middle of the range of adjustment on the waist band (which should sit above your hips).

I got a Black Diamond something or other and got the large which I now have adjusted to the smallest it will go and it is verging on being too big – inexperienced buyer and not very helpful/very busy shop assistant. I’m going to get a new one soon as I’m having a few too many high pitched voice moments after dynamic falls from the harness moving about.

Meant to add; I tend to wear my Anon for the 10 minutes the sun is out at Glenshee then put on my clear Spy goggles I got for mtb years ago. I keep meaning to get another lens for the Anon so I don’t have to carry a pair of goggles in my pocket when I’m not wearing a pack – the lens pops out of them pretty easily.

Saying that I did manage fine with the tinted lens for night riding in Qtwn – floodlights on top of the snow cannons and chair pylons and a DJ at the bottom of the slopes *wants to go boarding now*

I spent a long afternoon trying on almost (not Oakley for some reason) every pair of goggles in Queenstown. What I learned was that just ‘cos they look good doesn’t mean they fit! I found only Spy and Anon are wide enough not to have the foam sitting over the edge of my eye in a really uncomfortable manner so I would advise trying some on.

And remember, ALL goggles will steam up if you stick them on top of your head, or stop when you are hot. Don’t rub the inside with anything other than their case (you’ll rub the anti-fog coating off), just start skiing/riding again and they will clear.

This is very true, do not put your goggles on your head, especially if your beanie is covered in snow.

Or if you want (in the words of Simon Pegg) a

Badass helmet made in the UK that makes you look like imperial special forces black opps

you could try ruroc.com. I just saw that on twitter last night and they do look interesting, not cheap mind…

If you read the road.cc link, it sounds to me like Cy is aiming for a proper modern road bike made out of steel as he thought most of what he saw out there already were harking back rather than looking forward. Some more on it on the cotic site.

I thought I’d read more of Cy’s thoughts on it but can’t see it anywhere now, maybe I imagined it…

I don’t think it’s really competing with the Kaff as it looks like Cy has had to have his arm twisted to go for mudguard eyelets so it’s doubtful it’ll have rack bosses.

The Decathlon ones aren’t very good, at least mine aren’t – the pad fell out, and the sizing’s weird

Not the first person I’ve heard say that so I’d go with the weird sizing than you’re fault.

I’m very happy with a pair of Ground Effect Daddy Long Legs; non-padded tights but super warm, comfortable and well made. Just wear them over your fave bib shorts. Means you don’t need to wash them after every outing too. I’ll defo be getting more of their kit but do check out their sizing chart, I was flattered to see I’m a small! 😀

Haven’t tried one in years buit there ain’t a lot out there that will meet both those criteria unless you want a Carling in a plastic bottle?!

EDIT personally I did rather enjoy popping the cork on a big Leffe Blond bottle after a ride on the 1st.

Everyone seen the Cervelo P5 launch? Not the news expected from Magura but interesting all the same.

Road.cc article

Magura/Cervelo’s reasons for not doing road discs:

• Less weight due to [the fact that there’s no need for] stiffened frames and forks and special hubs with unsychronized forces.

• Better aerodynamics – disc/rotor and calliper create a lot of drag.

• Rim brakes are UCI approved, disc brakes are not.

• Braking power. The biggest friction diameter on a wheel is the rim.

• Easy wheel change.

Yep, get a synthetic insulation, it will stay warm when wet (or at least more so than down). My NorthFace one has a DWR coating, some don’t, but Flashy says TNF are chavvy so you’d best not get one of them 🙄 I think I get more use out of it than any other piece of clothing I own.

Personally I’d go to an outdoors shop and try some on. I found Rab and Montane versions didn’t fit me very well but I am a bit of a funny shape! Druidh is a big fan of his Montane one.

I haven’t tried it but the Colombia one with the foil lining looks like a good idea; I don’t know if it actually makes any difference to the warmth.

I’d also recommend getting a full zip so you don’t need to take your helmet off just to pull on your jacket for a few mins.

Don’t think many of the pubs mentioned do food other than the Holyrood – I haven’t been since I stopped eating meat so don’t know what the veggie options are like.

Don’t forget Edinburgh is small so nowhere is all that far away.

p.s. Papii is 101 hanover st if you want to check times/distances and hendersons veggie place is just across the road and urban angel a bit farther down.

I know what you mean, I felt more paranoid commuting when I had to wait a month to renew my BC membership in order to get a 2012 licence with it.

Can’t answer your question about using it but just to say you can get Ride membership of BC that has the benefits of Silver membership but without the racing bit so cheaper.

Looks like I would make more use of the CTC discounts than I do the BC though. Wiggle 12% discount through BC sounds great, but It’s actually 12% off rrp, so often you aren’t saving anything over the standard Wiggle price.

Presumably the OP has already looked, but links to appropriate pages for anyone wanting to compare benefits
CTC
BC

Are you a member of a club? I know some clubs have membership of CTC which covers their non-racing members.

Keyboard too wee for man sized fingers

I don’t have any problems with the keyboard and my thumbs look more like big toes!

I think my next phone may well be a jesus phonee. Using t’internet on my Bold is very slow and frustrating. I tried the Opera app but that was crap in a different kind of way.

BBM is of no interest to me as I think about two people I know have BBs and I can use text or facebook to chat instantly with them if I want to and don’t want to make an actual phone call.

ohnohesback – sounds like a NiteRider Cherry Bomb which I would highly recommend with the caveat that you need a mudguard if you want them to last. I though it was just the latest version that was poorly sealed but my older generation one has now let in salty spray and died 🙁

The one watt version is ludicrously bright!

EDIT: I’ll just add that I will get another, I’m going to put silicone sealant in/on it before use though. I’ll just reapply it when I change the batteries.

another edit: I would highly recommened a wee cheapie backup type led on the helmet front and back to help idiotic car drivers notice you and I’m going to try and find some of the battery powered fairy lights to string around my bag.

Ive been wandering; when the UCI allow discs for road, would that be incentive for hub manufacturers to standardise? we all know cycling needs more standards 😆 but it would get around neutral service issues…

We were out for a quick loop on Sunday – which was lovely on the frozen ground btw – and the bottom of Maidens is a mess of tyre tracks from the junction with Phantoms down to the rocky section before the road at Glencorse.

Obviously a lot of people don’t want to get muddy when they’re out on their bikes so lots of new lines down Maidens* and generally all the areas that would have been a little muddy line are now wide expanses of mud.

The bottom of the rocky road from Kinleith is shocking too, there is now axle (at least) deep mud from the fence on one side to the wall at the other although from what we saw horses are making a contribution to this too.

Two issues that I can see and I don’t think will be addressed no matter how many mtb forums you post on are;
1-with the easy accessibility to these bits of the hills there are a lot of people using them that are just out riding their bikes, and possibily making their first forays offroad, but haven’t bought into the lifestyle and don’t have any contact with the ‘mtb community’ and dont know/care that they are doing damage.
2-Horse riders need to take some responsibility and think about how much damage hooves can do on soft ground.

*I don’t really think this is too much of an issue except for the widening effect as it’ll get resurfaced soon enough and everyone will complain about it being ruined 🙄

There, I’ve taken ages typing and deleting and re-typing that so I hope it makes some sense!

p.s. the work done by the stw work crew looks like it is holding up well.
