I’m thinking Stans and I’ll be putting some into the next training tyres I get (the cheap contis I’ve got at the mo don’t have removable cores 🙁 ) as a preventative measure, what’s 20ml of sealant when your wheels weigh this little 😀

    I found a good vid of Stans at work in a tub here;

    3rd edit lucky 😆

Not been riding very much recently after a big crash in the bunch in a race (broke my pinkie 🙁 which then didn’t sit right and had to get wired a couple of weeks later) and the weather has been pish so didn’t think it would be wise to take them out in the chaingang until I was comfortable with the braking.

Took them out for my first proper ride on them yesterday , they feel so good, dunno if that’s ‘cos they’re tubs or just so bloody light. Braking wasn’t too scary even in the wet.

The only downside was the chunk of wire that sunk through my back tyre on the way home – looking at the bright side; changing a tub on the roadside wasn’t too bad, don’t think it took much longer than changing a tube, bit more expensive though!

Now, do I send it off to get repaired, cut it open and attempt to repair it myself or squirt in some Stans and hope for the best?

Thanks again for building them Al!

Cool, I’ll direct them towards West Hampstead, the Islabikes website and evilbay.

Whats the worst that can happen; you end up with a useless mech that’s in a bunch of small parts rather than a useless mech that’s in one piece! – do it! 🙂

What tires did you get in the end?

    Excellent work!

Now, what do you know about the differences between these two? http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/RIPXCAR50/planet_x_carbon_r50_rim and http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/RIPX50C/planet_x_50mm_carbon_rim and is there any reason i couldn’t use the 24 hole version of the latter as a front?

Just a wee bit of preliminary research at the moment… – must resist urge when I haven’t even ridden a tub yet never mind glued one or had to change one roadside following a puncture – thinking some Ambrosio Nemesis rims for winter 😈

on-one have a limit of 80kg on their built wheels with the same rims, I was just sshy of 80 last time I weighed myself 😀

njee – how do you know all this stuff about which brands are running the same parts, and how do you retain it?!

Al – I was weened on Guinness; all good things come to those who wait!

Have no idea what they weighed but the certainly weren’t heavy – comparing them to the road bikes rather than mtbs.

    Had and yes.

Got it for touring, spent a month on it in Portugal and Spain. last year. Whaddya want to know?

It was comfortable, felt more so than my carbon rd bike, but still felt fast, especially unloaded. Rode up towards Pico Veleta from Capilera and kept going for ages after the tarmac ran out one night. The descent was mental, rocky & powdery fire road at high speed! Handled it with aplomb and that was with 35mm touring tyres (with mud guards).

When we came back 35mm Conti cross tyres went on and we spent a day messing about at Glentress on the green and blue trails.

Haven’t tried it with 26″ wheels yet but am going to build Claires up as a commuter with flat bars – it was a smidgen too big for her with drops but hopefully will make a good light fast commuter for her.

Mine is now relegated to the mantle piece – Part of the rear drop out bent and a courier conspired to make sure that it looked like it had been rear ended by an hgv so didn’t get warrantied. 👿 I was going to get a Kaffenback to replace it, and write it off as an expensive fork, but never got round to it – I just don’t think the Kaff will be as good…

EDIT: rims were A319s on mine and Open Pros on Claire’s

ooh got the tubs then (and ditched the green tyres 🙁 ) how are they? Al is picking mine up tonight to build them for me.

I’m fine until the start line then my breathing and heart rate go completely bonkers, I’m hoping it will settle a bit with experience, although I think a little bit of pre-race nerves/tension/whatever is healthy.

I bought some of the cheap CRC ones but had a few issues with them

These ones? 10pack road tubes Me too, there were rings of what must have been bubbles in the manufacturing process that meant a whole load of punctures, will not be buying airwave tubes again!

My Golf, which went back today, was cheaper than the equivalent, or possibly lower spec, mazda.

The driver that collected it’s opinion is that if you are nice to cars leasing is worth it but if you are hard on them it’s better to own -all comess down to charges on return (I’m hoping mine aren’t too much but a couple of dents seem to have apeared in just the couple of weeks 🙄 ). He also pointed out that even a moderate charge on return is probably less than a couple of years servicing.

Peterpoddy – they do have them, you just have to dig a bit – I’m sure I found them when I was trying to work out the geometry of an old Hoss – then again, maybe not 🙁 .

Alternatively try one of the old konas on CRC, they had a massive size charts for previous years, depending how old it is, if you can find something within a year or two of MrsPPs one.

    I think this:

had linked the chains to create a much lower gi gel that gave a more steady release of energy

    is either this:

it might just have been marketing guff.

or the application of the sort of nasty industrial process that you probably don’t want to think about while consuming it. But I would be interested to read up on it.

CNP’s energy drink uses high levels of Taurine as its ‘protein’ source which I’m not too sure I like the idea of, even though I have happily poured many a can of Red Bull down my neck. http://road.cc/content/review/52760-cnp-professional-pro-hydrate

Not got that much desire to be on the mtb at the minute at all.

Me too – decided the bouncy bike is going to be sold along with all the burly bits I’ve aquired over the years. I seem to be embracing the lycra at the minute so there’s no point in hanging onto all this stuff. By the time I come back to it, if i ever do, I’ll probably be after something newer and shinier anyway 🙄

    we’re all getting distracted

and your point is caller? 🙂

I was going to point out that you had kindly posted a picture of Mr Hoy

I think you’ll find that that is a picture of Sir Hoy and he is training for a very different type of cycling than the rest of us and most other cyclists.

for anyone interested I got the 29ers and they are 756 rear and 758 front. I’m happy enough with that, if the hubs die I’ll rebuild them onto the spare 775’s I’ve got.

Thanks Dukeduvet they look like the ones I’m after, thought I’d looked there before but obviously not 🙂
