Which timezone? Gregorian, Julian or Muslim calendar?

I’m going to work tonight. Rapture should mean the roads are a bit clearer than usual :-)

Love the cooling towers – the shape is driven purely by function but is so “right”

1970s Bulova Accutron tuning fork watch. It was the first electronic watch but uses a tuning fork instead of quartz crystal. And it’s cool because it was my dad’s.

They’re quite “space-shippy” but the character development is quite similar to his main stream books. “Use of Weapons” is a good starting point.

Could it be that they tend not to build them in the middle of large cities? Do I win a prize?

End of life Japenese powerplants survive massive earthquake, giant tsunami and loss of electricity grid with no casualties. 10,000+ killed by earthquake and tsunami.

Soldering iron. That’s how to remove epoxied in ski binding mount screws. Heating’s localised and you can crank it up slowly – heat, try and turn, heat some more.

Thanks aP. Prescription is pretty mild with astigmatism

I was waiting for my turn flying in a Chipmunk with the air cadets. TV was on and we sat and watched it repeat and repeat. Nothing like it until 9/11.

Good stuff came out – Feynman’s contribution to the investigation

The yanks (and the astronaught corp) had the guts to keep flying them. It would have been an easy politcal decision to pull the civilian flights. Military might have carried on due to cross range capabilty regardless of risk.

    RIP

Exilegeordie, the Germans have (had) a thing about credit. Something to do with everyone losing their money in the 1930s. Most mail order is done by bill payments – a bit like UK Faster Payments but it’s been around a lot longer. Debit cards exist in large numbers but credit card uptake is much smaller than the UK or USA.

Suunto Observer. It’s actually pretty good for telling the weather at home as well as height in the mountains.

    The backlight is useful too.

Thanks Spokebloke – order just placed. And thanks for the hoody – very cool although the missus thinks I’m trying to regain my yoof (not true, I xdidn’t like hoodies then).

Wire wool and flux. Easy – but I’d leave the compression joint. Push fit is fine too.

Can’t find a picture but I saw a Mig 21 with skis for winter operations at the Soviet Airforce museum near Moscow. Barking mad.

Mine usually wake up but on occaisions have vomitted in their sleep. They insist on sleeping on their fronts (I know, not allowed but they keep turning over if you put them on their backs) with knees up near their chins so seem to self clear.

Wot they all said. With luck it’ll go away today. If it doesn’t you’re probably stuck with it. I was told it’s agravated by caffeine, red wine, tonic, citrus fruit. I’ve cut out the caffeine but would prefer not to live a life without fruit or wine.

On the plus side I’m lucky enough to associate it with the pleasant feeling of being dead tired. It doesn’t annoy me, it just gets in the way of hearing stuff.

Ebay for a big pile of different earplugs – find one you like. My favourite are MAX LITE SNR34 in flouro green.

PHD. Run by the bloke who set up Mountain Equipment. Produced in the UK. 800 down for more warmth with less weight. Sale on £125 for a really good piece of kit (like RAB used to be before it was sold)

Happened where I used to work. 2 women in a team that was offshored. Whilst management made some right cock ups in the past that was completely clean legally. Luckily, one of them then got to come back as a contractor in a different role.

Making a disabled person redundant is similarly risky but as long as you stick to the “job not person” and have it agreed by your lawyers and receive a papal bull there’s only a 50:50 chance of losing a lot of money doing it. (thought about adding a smiley but it doesn’t making me smile having done it)

Fine in a car but don’t put car oil in a motorbike (wet clutches slip due to anti friction additives in car oil).

I know you don’t want to use electricity but if you change your mind consider a portable air conditioner working in “heat” mode. It’s then a heat pump pulling heat from the outside air.

Thanks for the advice – I ddin’t know there was so much choice. I’ve gone for the Ragley Spike as it seems such good value and a clever design.

Not as good a phone as my N95-8Gb or camera but much better for web etc. Plus apps are useful. If Nokia can catch up I’ll be back again.

Might be worth considering another Android phone that has Swipe – it is the best way of entering text but they only OEM it now.
