Flowergirl I completely agree! I think 20 mins on your “manly” saddle would be enough to put any girl off riding for ever!!! Get her a new saddle they don’t have to be expensive and as I’ve said a lot do the 14 day money back!

You know that nowadays most saddle manufacturers have a 14 day returns policy if she doesn’t like it. Definately worth looking at some of those if she isn’t sure what she wants.

It’s definately worth investing a few quid in good shorts as they will m ake a massive difference. Wiggle or CRC often have some good discounts on more expensive stuff.

I didn’t find the undershorts/liners very nice! The pad really makes you feel like you’re wearing a nappy. But if you pay a little more to get some quality shorts with a decent liner that when off the bike you don’t notice them so much!
Lusso do some nice shorts (and quite flattering) for £20 or a little more expensive but I love are the De Marchi women’s ones at £35.

Saddle wise I have an expensive one on my Giant Reign. But on my winter hack bike and road bike I have a WTB, one of these which aren’t mega expensive:

Molgrips that’s a brilliant story I’m going to chuckle away to myself! Excellent!! He could ride fast on a kids bike! he just always manages it!!
Remember though Maindy Track is where Geraint Thomas started with Maindy Flyers now Olympic gold medal winner (and various others to boot!).
Cardiff JIF has had a few good names over it’s time … none you’d want to go training with!

I would like to add though that the female side of JIF is mainly riding and cake kind of trips!!! Especially to Glyncorrwg where you get the best home made cakes at the end of the ride!!

Unfortunately not any more! I live in Bicester but I was brought up in Cardiff and folks still live there. I was a founding member of JIF and still all my buddies so regularly back for weekends. Desperate to move back but job wise I need South Wales Police to open recruitment!!!!

Rusty head down to Newport and get out with the beginners. They are excellent with helping people start and getting into it and you can hire track bikes down there. Best person to get in contact with probably is Ian Jeremiah at Cyclopedia, Cryws Road (029 20377772) who owns the shop and one of the founder of JIF. He’ll tell you who best to contact in relation to this. I think Courtney Rowe runs a lot of the sessions but not sure if he mainly deals with the kids. Ian can give you everything you need though.

Defintaely worth going down there and having a go, great bunch of people as well (I would say that being my mates and all) ;-)

Did you go with the Cardiff JIF and AJAX lot? When I was younger we only had Maindy track which was so much easier!!! Is top fun when you get going

Grumm I don’t think you need to be worried about them coming back, it’s very rare for people like that to come back again. They may come back and look through the window and see if anything easy adn worth taking (so move it all upstairs) if they can’t see anything they probably will not go to the effort of breaking in. Also if they are “junkie scum” Then it’s unlikely they will return, professionals would have cleaned you out there and then. The “junkie scum’s” handler probably wants small easy items then get sell on easily and obviously rather than push bikes where they are obvious and harder to get rid of.

The MO for getting into your property is quite rare, is you say “smashed” as I imagine it to be it would have made a lot of noise! Think they were chancer druggies who had been garden hoping and saw something obvious!

Sorry to hear about it though, it’s always nasty when you know someone else has been in your house. Hopefully SOCO/CSI will get a fingerprint to nail the feckers!!

We should all go and do CX in Belgium it’s that big that one of their national races goes through a nice warm beer tent so spectators can watch from afar whilst getting sloshed…now that sounds a great way to spend a Sunday watching others race whilst drinking beer!!!

Don’t use either put both bikes in the car with seats down. Too expensive to risk it! borrowed a friends bike rack (rear mounted) and it was hideous constantly thought it was goign to fall off, was shaky and looked very insecure! I just want a bigger car for ease when putting bikes inside!!

Mind despite hating them I was still Welsh Junior CX Champion (years ago) and I don’t think I’ve done a race since I won!!!!! shows how much I hate them! Why run with your bike when you can go downhill super quick I say!!

The point is it is 1 hour of hard core exercise having a great work out, you know what time it’s all over. You do it through the winter when it’s minging and most courses have good facilities (bike wash, showers .. oh and how can you forget cake and tea!).

i can’t stand them but I can see why folk do, gets your skills up .. mud on skinny tyres! and some good cardio work out!

Whoo I’ve just ordered “guns, germs and steel” from the library! I don’t bother buying books anymore as I read about 1 a week and then have a stash never to be read again! Libraries are teh way forward and if you have to order it in from another library it costs all of 85p!!!! Oh and if it’s a cr** read you don’t feel obliged to finish it for the sake of it!

I have an old old (1994) Kona Fire Mountain which I love however it’s about to die. I’m looking at getting this Cube (although it is at the top end of your budget!).

however there is a slightlu cheaper one:

which has been given good reviews.

Yes wearing moon boots had a purpose they are good and useful if you wear them somewhere where they are needed. Maybe somewhere where there’s lots of snow and it’s considerably colder than the UK!

But UGG boots they cost £140 if you buy the “real” thing rather than the Barratts copies at £20 .. they don’t look good, they have flat, crap, slip over and break your neck soles ..and they are worn by stuck up posh teenagers who think they are “trendy”.

Awful things … and a man in them well I’m too gob smacked to comment!!

It’s ridiculous price but you could be paying £400 for a horribly boring “hand-me-down” Howies coat …. mmm now who would!!???

as Mr M-C, what she said. I find it easier to ride the R1 legally/sensibly than the ZX636C1H I had. The 600 only “worked” when you thrashed it (partly down to stiff kawasaki suspension) and was uncomfortable/difficult to ride slowly. Having ridden big twins and triples I was not used to having to change gear so often.

I find the R1 comfortable and easy to bimble on. Yes if I want to make progress it is ballistic, but so is a 600 if its revved to its limit. the difference is I can roll along in one gear if I wish (3rd is good from 30mph to ~130 so I’ve heard…)and still make swift, smooth progress.

I put 1000 miles a month on my 05R1 last year (until it snowed) and did a few 500 mile non-motorway days into mid wales etc. My experience is contrary to Tandemjeremy’s-It costs exactly as much to insure as my 600 did, has longer service intervals (yam @6000 compared to kaw @4000) and doesnt eat tyres any more than a smaller sports bike (I got less than 3000miles out of the rear on the C1 and even a 60hp NC30, and my current rear Pirelli is 3000 miles old and still going). I was 10mph quicker around Gerrards at Mallory on a trackday, not due to the power but due to the bike feeling so stable and planted. The bike oozes style and quality and is just a really nice place to be. as the hundreds Ive spent on bling over the winter will testify (CRG adjustable levers, Harris adjustable rearsets, Ti race cans).

If you havent guessed, I reckon you should go for it. I got it as a “one of those things you have to do” in my biking life and was prepared to change it after sampling the experience. I wont be changing it for a while as it is everything I wanted and hoped for and more.

Mr M-C has an R1 which he bought when he was 36ish! Prior to that he had a Kawasaki Ninja 636. He had always thought about an R1 but I think he had a few ideas like yourself. Would he ride it like a loon?

He decided in the end it was one of those things that you have to own once in a lifetime. He now loves his R1. He does (maybe .. I know he does) ride it like a loon but only when it’s safe … track days, dead of night etc. But then he’s been riding a motorbike since he was 16, has never owned a car and only passed his car test at the age of 30, so he is a very very competent rider.

In relation to comfort of the R1. We went up to Yorkshire (from Oxford) on the motorbikes last May and he had no problem with comfort… and it took a long time .. as I was on my SV and riding very girlie slow!!

I will get him to post more of his thoughts later when he gets home. But I think do it, have to do it once in a life time to get it out of your system but it will be up to you whether or not you ride it like a tw**!!!!!

Mind wedding dress shopping .. how horrific! Don’t ever want to get maried! went with a friend (As I’m her bridesmaid) it was full of stuck up pretentious women, I didn’t find one dress that I would’ve worn if I was getting married adn the only one I thought was “okay” was £1400!! I mean FFS why does it have to be so ridiculous!! Would rather spend the money on an awesome month trip to South American MTBing .. what more can I say!!
