Great stuff. Love ski touring but in reality of it done very little:several 4000m peak trips and quite a few day hits from here in Grenoble. Off to do the dome des écrins on the 14th and might pop up the barre on foot if time allows. Got some brand new waybacks and plum guides sitting in the garage.

Ps: having braved the Southern Ocean, to and from South Georgia, in a home made skip masquerading as a yacht, I would advise you take Shackleton to read and use Grylls for bog paper.

2nd pic shows a crack in it. By cutting it you might risk breaking it into smaller bits than you wanted.

sorry I couldn’t really be bothered doing the linky thing…

Anyway, I found a french speaking sleeping *ahem* partner works but not as well as everyone would imagine. We were together in UK for 6 or so years then moved over here to Frnace about 4 years ago. I work in English, form home, and I to be fair put more effort into my french when in the UK, however I am a lot more confident now….

Depends what sort of person you are, throing yourself in the dee end really works for some.

The bed I’ve just finished ‘making’ started off as Ikea’s cheapest kiddy bed. I’ve been thinking for sometime that IKEA stuff can be nicely modified and for a fraction of the price of buying wood to build from scratch. This was my 1st attempt as doing exactly that

I’ve just finished my 2nd kids bed and my 3rd bed (our bed is also homemmade).

The kids beds, whilst not as high a structure as yours are essentially kid size beds at normal ikea kid bed heights but with panels all around with a ntch cut out for entry.

For the panels I used cheap pine shelving boards. 300mm deep, approx 18mm thick 2m lengths about 8 euros per ‘shelf’. Whilst we’re in France I know the likes of B and Q do something similar. Think you can get them upto 600mm wide Even though they’re made of many short sections glued and compressed together they are smooth.

The first bed I stained in blue and shows the wood effect nicely, the 2nd one I’ve just finished has just a linseed oil finish and looks great. Can send you some photos if you want. I can’t be bothered with hosting them on flickr etc.

Birch ply would be the nicest finish possibly for larger widths. But pricey.

It’s in steel rahter than aluminum or abs plastic so will need hosing down or at least scraping to stop the grass’s acidity destroying the chasis. It does have a Briggs and Stratton engine* in it which whilst not Honda or Kawaskai is reputable.

*B and S’s do not have shear keys on the crankshaft, which means, as Mrs Mugsy found out when you try to mow a concrete pad it destroys the engine. B and S’s engines are fairly cheap to replace though….. (as Mrs Mugsy also found out)

Now you have a hole in the frame, why don’t you just fill it with water and attach a long camelbak hose. Streamline is all the rage.

In the father/ son relationship with me as son: I know I’ve failed, I know my Dad has failed. There’s no final definite resolution possibilities left for what has passed, only the possibilities of pretending.

With me as father: I know I have failed at times. This thread has really made me sad. But one thing it has done is to make me try harder.

    Nedrapier,

Been meaning to go up the val Clarre for quite a while. How was it?Heard good things about the hut.

Mrs Mugsy just been upto the Refuge des Aiguilles des Arves to do the Aiguille d’ Epaisseur and col de Aiguilles des Arves. Snow was a bit wet concrete in places apparently.

Lots of Avalanches around at present though with the warming up over the last 3 or so days…..

Sportives in the UK should be like they are here in France. Races for the masses typically over hilly/ scenic routes rather than doing multiple laps of an industrial estate or a set of country lanes near some hicksville village (bunch races). You always get a hot cooked meal at the end; usually a salad starter, pasta main dish, cheese and then a tart for example.

French Sportive winning times for 100-140km routes are upwards of at least a 38km/hr ave, the starts are typically on closed roads through the town and are mass hectic starts. Routes are signposted and marshalled, vehicular traffic usulally held up at junctions etc.

I did a local ‘rando’on Saturday organised by a local ‘cyclotouriste’ club (it does not literally translate) I guess they are a bit like open access Audaxes or middle ground between UK sportive and UK Audax: Food stops, food at end but no timing chips on a signposted but non marshalled route, no need for a licence or the ubiquitous medical certificate and around 1/4-1/5th entry price of a sportive.

I’m not sure postage will be prohibitively more expensive than from within the Uk, it will be more, but not a lot.

If you are interested, make me an all inclusive offer and I will then work out postage costs to see if I can do it.

As the boundary is now becoming a retaining wall, and ‘you’ are affected I would be asking for a set of checked calculations undertaken by a competent person and design drawings for the retaining structure.

Your average joe bloggs landscaper or even builder will not have done this.

I’ve got two QED (4m each I think…) XT silver aniversary cables made up with the QED airloc plugs at each end sitting next to me doing nothing.

Thye’ve been used for about a month before I bought the same but longer…I guessed the length required…incorretly the 1st time around!

Make me an offer via e-mail in my profile if you wish, I will have to post them from France though.

Sweedish Chef has it perfectly and when you consider they had a month to enter….

However if it was me, I would put something in writing (e-mail) to the main organiser/ committee whatever, or maybe raise it in a minuted meeting outlining your personal dilemma in order to open a review process on how entries are allocated.

Anyway, sounds to me like you have a right to race on two counts:
    1. your results to date
    2. you were failry awarded an entry according to the entry conditions in this instance.

    Go race, go hard.

Carpets are not an option. We have hard tiles as do most french houses. A few more rugs might be. Rerally thanks everyone some funny ideas (have already considered the gaffa tape option) and some good ‘oh yes’ ideas.

it’s like a walkway. The stairs are at one end of the house where the open space is full house height and the upstairs rooms are at the other end of this open space..

Trialling with some duvets sounds like a great idea.

Projects in mind that might or might not help are:

Creating a metre ish high stud wall to semi box in a section of the mezzanine, at present it is steel railing and mesh. Will insulate the stud wall internally.

Building a 2.5m high ish 0.7m wide internal feature type log pile.

Fitting a heavy door to the offshoot coridor to isolate bedrooms and quieten them for when someone listening to music or watching a film.

And maybe building some sort of shelving screen to block loungue area off slightly from front door which is not often used but opens directly into the large space direct from outside.

I’ve resorted many a time to BB tool in the vice and then turning (note 1) the whole bike whilst the bb tool is inserted (note 2).

note 1: you absolutley must turn it the correct way
note 2: assuming you have splines on the bb.

    …….

Why don’t you just look at disconnecting the lead pipe at the main house connection rather than trying to cap the outhouse end of the lead pipe?

    Or am I missing something?

It’ll be fine and great and everyone will love it. Do it. But don’t let it dictate too much of the holiday.

…and don’t get any romantic ideas about a night on top of a deserted col the night before.

It’s madnees I tell thee. You aren’t even allowed to race unlike the ones at home in France.

and you don’t get a 3 course meal including wine at the end either. And they’re only around 30 euros unless you go for the ‘popular with the English, Dutch, Belge etc.’ variety.
