My got my son going with a balance bike and then rode his first real one around his 6th birthday – kept him away from stabilisers. Unfortunately I didn’t take him out much after that but have made up for it this year and we now do 10k rides every Sunday mostly through woods – accidentally took him down some pretty steep, rooty singletrack yesterday which resulted in his 1st proper crash but he liked it mostly! Got him a 20″ wheel mtb with gears to replace his BMX for his 7th birthday next week.

So, the ‘middle class’ was invented – the only barrier to entry is a job, that’s the only real barrier

The middle classes came from the merchants and bankers – so people that work with their brains and have cash to invest.

The use of language is considered by some to be a good way of indicating class – ketchup sounds working/lower class to me – I say tomato sauce anyway…. ;)

Some people will argue about anything!

    terrorism
    NOUN

    mass noun
The unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.

I do know that if I met someone who was class orientated I would probably find it quite irritating!

    That sounds like lower-middle class.

Just talk to the council and let them decide if the fact he works long hours justifies driving around a village in a tractor in the middle of the night.

What’s actually the difference between middle and working class? (I’ve googled it, and I’m none the wiser)

Maybe white v blue collar these days but really it’s your family background that counts.

he was saying ‘I want to kill Muslims. ‘I want to kill Muslims.'”
    That’ll do for me.

Not really, revenge isn’t terrorism. Terrorism wants to achieve something through terror.

I started roller blading in NYC in ’99 when I worked out there, came back to UK but found it hard to find places to go. Hyde Park was OKish, and I did meet some really friendly guys, but switched to cycling in the end.

Evangelical – I notice people here are using it when they really mean fundamentalist. Evangelical is really about spreading the word – in IT some use it as a title for people who encourage people to use a technology they are interested in.

As for the bible and homosexuality – its not mentioned in the New Testament which is what guides most Christians, love of all people is the prime rule here. Those Christians who do think homosexuality is wrong tend to take the view ‘Hate the sin, love the sinner’. Obviously there is still the idea that it is a sin for many but no greater than any other sin and we all sin – obviously the idea that it is a sin is still an issue however churches in the UK are moving to pretty much complete acceptance of homosexuals, a number of vicars are openly gay, but they are meant to stay celibate.

Buy her the same dress in the next size up and swap the labels. For as long as you can afford to stick with this approach all will be fine.

Tightwads don’t make for very good customers, and aren’t conducive towards a good atmosphere in a restaurant.

Really? Don’t most people quietly eat their meal, pay then go? That’s all I what I want from other customers when I eat out (I mostly tip though did create this thread about paying a service charge at the restaurant in the hotel I stay for work – http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/tipping-at-hotels )

The restaurants must love you! Do you go anywhere regularly? Do you find the service has gone down hill?

So restaurants want to put off regular income then because of a bad tipper? They must have too much business?!

First he wanted them to paint a bedroom so that he could see the quality of their work . Unsurprisingly the work was never good enough and he never paid anybody . He’d only got about 6 rooms done by the time I left

Fair enough I suppose if you find as many decorators as possible then decide who’s the best and pay them for the remaining rooms – which will be a chunk less than the whole lot. If decorators are happy to play this game. Though maybe he’d just choose the cheapest in the end?!

Good to know you drink your wife-beater “with class”.

So can/bottle choice is nothing to do with class IYO? I’m curious.

Cans/bottles IME would seem to be a class thing but with craft beers that’s being challenged now.

I wouldn’t serve house guests cans.

    The Brexit no-one wanted…

1 of the most bizarre aspects of the UK’s current direction is that none of the Brexit Leadership expected this hard brexit. Looking back prior to the referendum, there were 2 schools of thought from Brexit leaders, and this drove 90% of their thinking:

We would stay in the single market in a Norway style model
We’d use our trade deficit to force a free trade deal

    The Brexit no-one wanted

There are 10 types of people in the world; those that understand binary and those that don’t.

I got a t-shirt made up that said 2, seems only I thought it was funny.

Dunno what mine is really but from tests I did years ago in the 140s – note sure I’d get into Mensa. Work in IT, which doesn’t mean much, paid better than most but have earnt more from the stock market in recent years – Brexit/weak pound aided!

i don’t see what difference staying up late to hear what I’ll hear anyway tomorrow morning will make, other than being tired at work.

But it can be so exciting – if your party does unexpectedly well….

Watching the results come in all night as a student in ’92 was brilliant.

I have to travel back home later on so might not bother as the Tory majority is so large, close to the bottom of this list showing majorities at last election:

If you’re in an area close to the top then must try and vote for sure!

Hmmm took over my Dad’s Honda hr194 12 years ago, didn’t use it for the 2 I lived in London but have since then. Never knew I should look after it but it starts each Spring after a few pulls having left fuel in over winter. I topped up the oil for the 1st time last year, great machine really.

    Mechanical Dura Ace presumably…?

Ha ha, I was concentrating on work…I meant Ultegra.

    mudshark

Would you go for an Ultegra di2 over a dura ace mechanical is now the question? as both groupsets can be had for about £900

I’ve had Ultegra Di2 for a few years on my Giant Defy and do like it but bought a 2nd hand Giant TCR with mechanical Di2 more recently and mostly ride that happily enough so I wouldn’t choose to pay more for Di2 and would get Dura Ace given the choice.

Curvy girl at work was using it, stopped now, still just as curvy

Gave me the idea to eat porridge instead of canteen food as I stay in a hotel 3 times a week and was eating too much.

Lost 12 lbs in 2 months to get to my summer weight – did lots of cycling too though.

    On my 3rd 800:

1st one died in the rain on 2011 Dragon Ride – got warranty replacement
2nd one corroded so much in the USB port that no connection possible – got £76 refurbed replacement
3rd one mostly works but touch screen doesn’t work top right half so not sure how long it’ll last now. This one has lasted the longest.

I like decent mapping which only Garmin seem to do though the Hammerhead looks good.

Can I live in a stock portfolio ?

Does it give me security of not having rent increases or my land lord deciding to sell up or taking exception To my car or having to put up with his godawful wallpaper….

Better paying my own interest than the landlords surely ?

My point is people don’t appreciate the costs of owning, if rent is equal to interest paid (and lost on capital tied up in the property) then there is a zero gain assuming prices don’t change. If they go up, as is assumed, then there’s a nice profit – not least as most borrow so are heavily geared. But the flip-side to this is it’s easy to be wiped out as some BTLers found out following the banking crisis.

Just for the record – I bought in 1996 which was at the bottom of the market following the late 80s/early 90s slump, borrowing heavily as was sure prices would rise, carried on with a move to London and rode that wave pretty well though got of too early 10 years ago, from an financial PoV, as moved out to a nice Surrey village which hasn’t done nearly as well since.

Mines has dropped by about 25% theoretically

Realistically it’s not 25% less house and still lost less than I would have paid in rent

How much have you paid in interest or lost out on a potential return from investing in the stock market?

I went permie at an IT consultancy as I can see people in my area struggling to get work as most projects are going to be cloud related now and we need to get the new skillz. Might still lose my job though but they seem keen to give training for now.

I got a Spectrum in 1984 and learned how to program. Years later I did the coding for how the banks bill each other for when customers from one bank use another bank’s ATM – feeds into Oracle EBS, far more complicated than you might imagine….

The worst thing about all of this is that the banks could if they wished trace the route of the money.. but banking secrecy wins.

We’re a couple of miles from Cobham in Leatherhead and loads of kids cycle (my boy does every day) but there are good cycle paths and it’s safe.

I’m nearby – do some kids use that newish cycle path between Leatherhead and Ashtead? Useless for adults IMO – do any of them use it?
