Never ask for pension advice on here, because you get the same old claptrap regurgitated as advice like

Well you get some good advice!

Do I have to get my employer to pay into the SIPP at the point I get my salary to get the tax relief as otherwise I’ve already paid income tax?

Your SIPP provider will claim the lower rate tax and add it to your SIPP – takes a few weeks. Higher rate tax payers can claim the rest on the their tax return.

I was pretty skinny, active and hungry – my Mum gave me sandwiches to take to school for a 2nd lunch as my school lunch wasn’t filling me up.

The water company seem convinced that my house is called ‘High Ash’, never seen any other reference to this. Nice enough to use if I knew why it’s called that.

your better off putting your money in a savings account..why

Because when you do evently draw your pension …you get taxed on it…….

You’ll get taxed on savings a/c interest too though.

    SIPPs for the win!

A curve ball, Derby … quite a nice place to live

    Really?

I’m working in Cheltenham at the moment, quite taken with it really – well the surrounding area anyway.

So if Sky signed up a French GC contender what would the French think about them then? And if the French chap then won the Tour?! Maybe this is Dave’s plan to get them onside?

twinw4ll – if you’re a cash buyer you can move quickly, especially if you forget about a survey. Thing is to make sure the vendor moves quickly too. Other than that explicitly ask the vendor to take the property off the market as part of accepting your offer, I did this and still had an attempted gazumping from someone who’d already seen it though.

That’s the thing really, if you’re earning decent money might as well carry on doing it – it’s how you value your time I suppose. I wonder how long I’ll be able to earn as much as I do now, would I take a job paying an average salary or would I ‘retire’? Hopefully the wife will still be working to make that decision easier!

I know people worth up to £1.5m, they still work and seem pretty ordinary really. Nice house but no super car.

I’ve never had any interest in buying a ticket but do invest in the stock market – makes more sense to me I suppose. Never bet on horses either though that does give a far better return that the lottery and is more fun – but more effort I suppose.

Making cheeky offers is fine but be careful as more likely to get gazumped, in reality cheeky offers will mostly get rejected if the market is strong enough so if they’re accepted can mostly stick. I last bought in 2007 as things were getting quite boomy, 1st offer was rejected but still ended up paying under the asking price – not bad as someone then tried to gazump me with an asking price offer but vendor was a decent chap who I’d put in the effort to develop a decent relationship with.

Suprised BMC are mentioned as possibly pulling out, they are well funded and seem happy to pay decent money for the riders they want – rumours are Porte is getting a few million/year.

Seems Team Sky are just too professional for professional cycling?!

So it’ll be his last season, go for the double again or just the Tour to stand a better chance of winning?

I work in Bishop’s Cleeve close to Cheltenham, some decent hills near there but I stick to the road.

Spending more on the source is an age old view but as source quality has improved per pound spent more than with speakers, IMO, I’d say the rule isn’t so useful now. But then I don’t listen to new stuff these days as happy with what I’ve got.

I bought a 2nd hand pair of these in the late 90s and see no reason to change them as sound great on my Naim CD anf pre/power.

I’d be worried about any kid that got to the end of that!

    My faves as a kid:

    The Chrysalids
    Rogue Male

Not many ‘got it’ he told me.

Most would be paying of mortgage in earlier years – best that way IMO, also best to wait until on higher tax rate.

I paid of mortgage then put lump sums into SIPP, using 40% tax, and ISAs. Hard to get the balance right between enjoying money whilst young enough to take full advantage, and having enough to be comfortable later.

How many years are you planning on working for to get £500 a month up to £1million?

Including capital growth of say 7% – 40 years would be more than enough.

My roadie club’s accounts are published, we have quite a bit in the bank (maybe £20k) and the idea is for that to stay static year on year – the fee has remained at £25 for as long as I’ve been a member though now joiners pay £40 and get a club jersey which seems a good deal. Quite a lot gets given to charity – much of that comes from the proceeds of our sportive – and club kit is subsidised plus a few social events each year and trips. Seems fine to me but they could drop the costs or give us more back – not sure what the bank balance would ever be used for.

Time to start selling a few assets to pay off some debt?

At the start of the crisis, the Greek government committed itself to bringing in €50bn from the sale of state assets. According to Mr Theocharis, that target was soon reduced to €30bn and then €20bn.
In total, the government has managed to raise about €2-3bn so far.

If we didn’t pay the agreed payments we’d have to give back the Crown Estate I suppose. We’d be worse off if that happened.

Some sort of alarm to go off when doors opened? Then just drive tell immigration people to take a look? A lot of food stuffs has to be destroyed when the immigrants get amongst it so not great for the drivers – fines too of course.

Given the adoration for the Royal Family in many parts of the world I think it must have a tourism benefit – how much it would be affected by not having them I have no idea but that’s not going to happen anyway.

I doubt the Queen gets too involved with the finances – she has a man for that who is duty bound to do his best for her – it’s up to Gov’t to do what’s right. I hear a lot of work is needed in the palaces so money gets spent on that.

Is it right? Dunno but it’s a tiny amount of money compared to so much that’s wasted and we love ’em (mostly).
