(shakes fist at Pictonroad)….damn you for swiping the last of the waterproof socks from the Rustington store!

Ah well, guess it’ll be some LED lights, a bucket load of GT85 and a Merino top or two for me then.

Dont think much of the final surface quality…2 coats a day, every day, year in, year out is all well can good but obviously couldn’t be bothered about sanding back between applications.

M25 clockwise from jct 29 to the QE2 bridge…was three lanes of pure driving hell and now it’s four lanes of total dispair…all caused by people queuing up to get into Lakeside shopping centre (the third circle of Hades) and IKEA ( the second) and then the cars, trucks, busses that either slow right down, break down or crash as soon as they hit the incline of the QE2 bridge. One high point was watching two drivers having a post cut-up incident fight/wrestling match/heavy petting sesh (wasn’t sure as I didn’t want to stop as I was in a hurry to get home) in the middle of lane 3 of the bridge one sunny afternoon in bumper to bumper traffic…
Only positive now is that the toll booths have gone so you now avoid the 12 lane automotive equivalent of “Runaround NOW!” (One for older viewers) once you finally reach Kent.

Very closely matched with jct 4/3/2 ( depending on the severity) to jct 30 via the Dartford tunnel…abandon hope all ye who enter…

11 years of my life was spent commuting on that road, the day I quit my job and realised I didn’t have to do that commute was a very special day indeed.

Now the queuing on the local A27 at Arundel, whilst bad, seems pretty tame in comparison, not being in a hurry any more and a mix of flexi-time/working from home helps greatly too 🙂

My 7 year old self was wondering who this Elvis person was and what all the fuss was about.

A few weeks later, having been subjected to a load of Elvis movies that the BBC had put on in tribute ( instead of the usual kids programme during the holiday daytime) my initial opinion hadn’t really changed much, except that I felt that Tom and Jerry was much better.

Never mistake an opinion for expertise.

Strongly held or loudly voiced opinions should be treated accordingly.

    Best Die Hard movies?

    1: Die Hard
2: Approximately 15minutes of The Fifth Element where JohnMcLean suddenly appears wearing a torn shirt/vest and kicks both alien and Gary Oldman butt.
3: Approximately 22minutes of Looper (but that might have been Joseph Gordon Levitt with a dodgy false nose)
    4: DieHard2 and Die Hard 3 tied

Note that any episode of Moonlighting has better gritty realism and drama than Die Hard5
Or Blind Date for that matter.
    Or indeed Hudson Hawk.

Yippee kayay to all you melon farmers.

    Chaos.

It means a complete absence of order.

It doesn’t mean a few trains are late due to a points failure at Clapham Jct…unless the points had turned into a large bunch of bananas called Gerald and had decided to run for intergalactic president after proposing to Susan Boyle following a long and heartfelt duet where Gerald had admitted his hair was not his own, in which case the term “chaos on the railways” would, for once, actually be appropriate.

And don’t get me started on “very unique”

    And….

Lots of nice pubs in Arundel, just be warned that the Black Rabbit ( north of the Wildfowl and Wetlands centre) whilst a nice place to be but the food and beer is very average and its VERY busy.
Bignor Roman Villa (just north of the downs)
Amberley Working Museum…slightly bizarre displays of old cellphones and you can see where the end of “A view to a Kill” was filmed.
Bluebells…go to Arundel Park Estate (on the other side of the river just east of Warningcamp) for a stroll. The bluebells are in full bloom and looked great yesterday evening.

It’s just a pity that the Curiousity Shop in Arundel closed years ago as it was a bonkers display of lots to wierd two headed cats in jars of formaldehyde…hmm, possibly wasn’t for everyone.

OP, There are no rules regarding what to wear on a road bike, just what you feel comfortable in ( with the exception of your birthday suit which may cause issues with traffic/old ladies/nuns/chafing/the police/the judiciary etc.)

Baggies are ok. It just depends how much flappyness you are happy to put up with. Just make sure you loose the peak on your helmet….you’ll work this one out during your first ride. Just get the bike ( making sure it fits you) and get out and see.

If you find that road cycling is for you you might just find yourself starting to look at ads for Castelli and Rapha gear, or, if you’re a cheapskate like me then DHB, but to honest if that happens, that’s ok, just go with the flow. If not, don’t worry, just embrace the speed and distance instead.

Can’t speak for the cotic but I’ve got a latest model t129s

It’s very good, it’s a big bike with a relaxed geometry but feels very nimble and seems a really good all round bike that’s at home of singletrack, technical trails and open downland. I’m Pretty much sold on the whole idea of 29ers now too.

    My votes:

    Moon,
    Monsters,
    Arrival,
The Expanse ( so good I read all the books…)
Cloverfield ( is it a monster movie? Is it sci fi? Is it a monster/home movie mashup?)
Pacific Rim ( I love 1960’s Japanese monster movies so this was right up my street)
Rogue One (a Star Wars film where storm troopers can shoot straight)
Gravity (thought I’d spend the whole film complaining about plot holes but instead really enjoyed it)
    Under the skin
    District 9

Quite enjoyed ex machina but was wondering why the really smart nerdy head of a tech company hadn’t heard of asimovs three laws of robotics…just applying the first law would have saved him a hell of a lot of trouble.

To be honest, I’d really like someone to make a film of Against a dark background by Iain M Banks.

Ok then, not exactly mine but….

620kg, currently we’re getting about 330bhp, generates usable downforce at about 60mph and glues itself to the road when going faster. 0-60 currently at about 3.2s but we think we can pare this down a bit more…it’s very, very fast…. 8)

Oh and it’ll do 40mpg when you aren’t pushing it 😉

Nissan Leaf and Renault Zoe were designed to both look like “normal” cars and be accepted as such. The Leaf was proposed with a much more radical exterior design that the electric powertrain allows ( more cab foreword monovolume) but as it was Nissans first full EV they took a conscious decision to make it more conservative and not scare off potential customers or risk not being taken seriously.

Prius is now in its fourth generation and is designed as pretty much a standalone EV brand within Toyota so the current one looks way more radical than the previous ones. To be honest I think it’s a little bit out of control with the from language but it’s all relative….Prius is a statement of Eco cried that a focus or golf is not so Toyota can get away with doing somthing a big Moore off the wall design wise… Prius Prime ( it’s going to be sold as a Prius sport or high power or somthing in the Uk) looks a lot better with a new front bumper/hood design that seems to fix a few of the visual issues the current Prius has.

EV’s and hybrids now are becoming much more the norm but with a few notable exceptions (Prius and BMWi3 for example) most are still trying to blend in with the rest of vehicles out there. I saw the new Hyndai hybrid yesterday and visually it’s frankly dull as ditchwater.

To be honest a lot of the issues with car design is that the buyers tend to be quite conservative ( expensive purchase and most don’t want to buy somthing that goes out of fashion quickly) and the companies that build the cars even more so (big cash and time investment means they veer towards more conservative approaches….occasionally it’s different when everyone just “gets” the design but that’s rare…). Having sat in on some customer clinics where we showcased new car designs you tend to listen to the responses from some members of the public and die a little inside: some people get a new groundbreaking design right from the start, some need a lot of time to come round to something new, some just want something that doesn’t shout at all and is the automotive equivalent of magnolia paint…it’s also quite hard to make a statement of your individuality when you are driving around in the same thing as 100,000 other people!

Really enjoyed the programme but have to admit my slight local bias with the national park being about 5minutes ride from my front door. I’ve heard the whole of the South Downs described as “flat” “rolling” and “no real hills” . True there are no real mountains but obviously people who say it’s flat haven’t gone riding with Ming the Merciless on one of his Imperial Tours or “Long Mans revenge” rides 8)

As for singletrack, Friston? Stanmer? Whiteways? Kingsley Vale? QECP? Nothing to see there, move on 😉

Green mk3 Cortina XL. I still remember the agony of beige vinyl interior…after long hot journeys on summer holidays in the early 1970s the memory of the pain of skin on the backs of my legs being peeled away from the seat will remain with me till the grave. 40 plus years on and I’m still traumatised by that.

Now my dads next car, an orange mk3 cortina GXL that followed it was pure class 1975 style ( all traces of vinyl relegated to the exterior roof and the seats were covered in fabric …luxury!) 8)

The News Quiz is very good (I like Mike Jupp a lot) agree about the Now Show going downhill to the point of being just dire now though
Mark Steel’s in Town seems to one f the best things out there at the moment.
Nobody has mentioned “Its not what you know” Which miles Jupp did before he chaired the News Quiz.
It’s your round (from a few years back but good and always good to hear Angus Deayton)
You can try some of the podcast that are out there:
no such thing as a fish ( done by the researchers from QI and is arguably far better that it)
Book Shambles with Josie Long and Robin Ince
Kermide and Mayos film review (5Live) podcast

As for Cabin Pressure….in my best BA captains voice: “the lemon is in play…” 🙂

Use a Foam non abrasive scouring pad ( not metal for obvious reasons) or a bug removal pad ( foam sponge with a mesh net ) on the Windows next time you wash the car. You can use a car specific glass polish too but don’t use car polish or t cut unless you like a frosted glass effect…

Hmm.. Can’t help thinking reading this thread that the other party’s insurance company is simply doing their job…for the other party.

Yet another very good reason to be have some form of insurance. Eg Cycling UK legal cover

British cycling does something very similar.

I think the OP is being screwed over becasue their solicitor isn’t being proactive enough and they are being fobbed off by the other party’s solicitor . Everyone I know who has used CTC/Cycling Uk has had very quick and positive results, defo new bike frame/bike required as per the cycling shops view. Personal injury claim would also be factored in too.

If you like your dystopian mixed with Terry Gilliam then watch Brazil.
Pacific Rim is the best antidote to any of the (sh!te) Transformers movies and indeed most dumb Hollywood blockbusters.
Monsters is very good ( may be a bit slow for some) , leads in nicely to Godzilla and then Rogue One by the same director.
Moon is just plain awesome 🙂
Another vote here for The Expanse, not quite up to Battelstar Galactica but very, very good nonetheless.

Plane with anti-colision lights (most likely the white strobes) flashing. I’ve caught similar images using my camera on long exposure.

Or possibly it’s a piece of rotating space junk that’s catching the light as it spins…depends on the orbit of course and if you are looking west, so it will catch the sun that’s below the horizon.

Anybody who misuses the term “literally” in normal conversation shall be beaten in public with a wet kipper.

Repeat offenders will be hit in the face with a haddock.

Upon every third Thursday of the month the entire population shall affect a Sean Connery accent when speaking, except for Sean Connery himself , who will instead have to talk like Roger Moore.

I loved my 855 to bits*…two, possibly three full inches of weather dependant elastomer undamped front and rear suspension.

*Slightly ironic as it did eventually end up in bits that were donor parts for other bike projects with the exception of the frame and forks which went to the great big metal recycling bin in the sky (or the one at the local refuse dump)so it’s probably beer cans now. if only I had known about RetroBike back in 2000 I could have flogged it to some confused technophobe ten years later.
