I got OS 1:50,000 for the whole of the UK from ebay for £21

are they legal? to buy from legitimate sources would cost far more… this thread is also duplicated..

memory maps will not work with garmin they are a different format and cannot be converted (already tried that I have both now!). you cannot use someone else s maps either as once connected to the internet the device is checked for duplication. There are 2 sets of maps included with the basecamp software “garmin base maps” that are uselss and “open street maps” which are okay but as said not as detailed as OS.

be aware no maps with this garmin. base maps are useless, open street maps can be used but not as detailed as a good old OS map. (and before someone jumps in about vectors and rastors… I just like os even though they are rubbish up close

just be mindful there are no maps included with that garmin on amazon. the base maps from garmin are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Open street maps can be used but I just like an OS map because it looks pretty. you can buy OS maps afterwards but they are very expensive if not bought up front with the device. factor in another £80 quid for ones with maps

having shelled out for the os map, using the osm alternative seemed a bit of a cope out, as you wouldn’t be able to use the OS product. yes and no it will give turn by turn off road…in a fashion?
If anyone can find how to in the all encompassing Garmin user manual I’d be happy to eat my words http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/Edge_800_OM_EN.pdf

the response from garmin was to use a third party app to make the routes for turn by turn off road?? go figure!
and then it will use the waypoint markers to get it to beep.
if your going round a corner that could be slightly annoying?
with lots of routes already planned as gpx files I can’t be bothered.
back to basics for me – paper map, use the course follower on the edge as backup

    Do you haggle in halfords?

bought some car paint once, it was out of date on the can and asked if they wanted shot of it. so yes.

and forgive me but do you struggle to ask for things in person?

not sure what your getting at?.do I struggle with chatting to random people on forums? clearly not

I’ve heard very good things about the Five Dales circuit in the vertebrate publishing white peak book.

Not sure if it fits the bill distance-wise, but I’d have a look.
as listed on this website gives distance etc but you have to buy the book for the map http://www.bikemaps.co.uk/peak-district-mtb/white-peak-district-mountain-biking.htm

is that your budget? there are lots of gps units out there. do you want it to just track where you have been or navigate you somewhere? personally I wouldn’t buy a garmin for poor customer support but each to there own. Another option is to buy a cheap and cheerful phone with replaceable batteries, if it’s not connected to the phone signal that will save a bit of juice and you can still listen to the audio

good good, once your on the monsai trail the option to extend further is fairly easy to work out on an os map. cafe stops abound on this route. we covered the 17.7 miles in about 2.5 hrs (moving time) with a few wrong turns. hence would definitely extend the ride out a bit

I have the Garmin edge 800, and bought it with the 1:50 Os maps (that’s the cheapest option as the maps individually are very expensive) for use off road – BE-AWARE IT WILL NOT give turn by turn OFF ROAD, only ON road. The instructions are awful and was confirmed after allot of faffing about by Garmin’s poor customer support. As mentioned the edge tourer looks like an 800 but without the “performance” extras that athletes find useful. Personally I wouldn’t buy another garmin because of the poor support however your choices are limited. You could look at the memory map adventurer product http://www.evanscycles.com/products/memory-map/adventurer-3500-gps-with-full-country-maps-ec025210
    or http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Memory-Map-Adventurer-2800-GPS-Receiver-/291235653778?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_GPSSystems_GPSSystems&hash=item43ceff6892 second hand
which is the only other real alternative. This doesn’t come with any the cycle performance stuff either nor does turn by turn but the software is far easier to use and you could probably get some 1:25 added which are more detailed than the 1:50. Battery life wise both products offer similar hours usage.
If you buy the garmin – then do it well before your big ride to get use to using it (it’s wacky for sure)…if you live near an Evans then ask about hiring a memory map to try for the day, they hire them out for the ride it events.

the vast majority of LBS cannot buy their stock for the same prices of the internet big boys. It’s generally a tiered system of “trade price”/ “stockist”/ “premier” and “elite” when buying from the trade catalogues. LBS generally fall into the stockist bracket and thus pay approx. 5 to 6% more than the “elite” seller on each item. CRC, Wiggle are multi million pound companies and like supermarkets probably command even more discount. Not knocking my LBS but they struggle to get stuff in most of the time and I would hazard a guess why. where ever possible I will give the money to the LBS if they have what I’m after.

fractured both hands and neither were potted (long story), as a result took ages for them to feel normal again..many months before the twinge pains disappeared. breaks are a pain as the cast helps the healing but weakens the muscle, but would think thats quicker to recover from? (4 little girls and all that 😯 )

try this route Eyam to Bakewell which is similar to those mentioned, we did it the other week…good ride. I would take the option to extend up into chatsworth as suggested.

batteries can do allot of damage when they corrode, all sorts of chemical reactions take place that play havoc with the electrics. the plating may have been damaged or corroded the contacts…it all needs to come off to prevent a short between the contacts, and make a contact.

not a bad attempt at tethering the device but wouldn’t trust the rubber to hold out for long.

    muddy9mtb

seems ironic that the 800 doesn’t have the tether, although I don’t have mine to hand to check..just this photo
if it is does then that gets rid of the hook bit…but a better cord would still suffice.
Tethering seems to be the way to go, a new mount is not secure enough from what I’ve read and someway in the group having similar problems even with a k mount

any pictures? have you stripped and cleaned out any leaked fluid/ acid from within? if the switch is dry around all the contacts then it is probably damaged the internals and not worth repairing.

only had it a few months and nearly lost it around rosedale abbey (came off but managed to find it amongst the heather), to date I’ve lost count how many times it has come loose and looks like even with an expensive mount it’s never going to be secure. THUS I am going to design something to ensure better security. I’m thinking a 3D printed hook glued onto the device and held securely with cord similiar to how tv’s etc are secured in an office

    ….watch this space
PS – I do like the ability to programme your number will defo be giving that a go

at least you pressed save…there’s no way of recoverying the “lost bit” when you forget to hit “start” again…how many times have I ended up with a lovely straight line on my map….DOH!

no this looks like the cover that goes over the shifter when you remove the gear selection indicator. that’s in the description, the picture however suggest it’s for gears without this? odd. but if you look at how it’s displayed in the picture the gear lever is missing and the handlebar mount is shown.
