Pinned it! It was my headset (hope sealed) took it apart and put it back together – silence. Took it apart again and put a thin layer of grease to prevent it coming back.

    Thanks for the idea Bikewhisperer.

Was rather loud more clunky than ticky, seems it resonated through the frame, sounded like it came from the rear dropouts, strange stuff.

    retard on saddle

    🙄

Speaking of saddle only ticks when out of it i.e. standing up

Not zips or shoes, I have ridden it in all sorts of clothes i.e. normal clothes/cycle clothes

Could it be the frame? How could I check this?

Avid rotor 1.9mm shimano rotor 2.1mm. When I used shimano rotors with my avids I got slightly less pad clearance, still usable though.

Most people seem to run a 32, why not a 36? since I though that there would be less stress on the chain…

    Buy it 😈

There are plenty of Leyland Olympians still on the roads and plenty in scrap yards too, so finding spare parts will be easy and cheep. They are fairly bomb proof, and seem to have a fair turn of speed for a bus. In other words if I were ever to buy a double decker bus it would be one of these. You could live upstairs and fill the bottom deck with bikes for all occasions

Took a hub apart in my bedroom. Read an article on the basics of grease.

I took my hub apart, here is what I saw:

    Non drive side:

    Drive side with bearings out:

The drive and Non drive side cones, I removed the grease from the drive side one. Those are the bearing out of the drive side too:

The cones were fine they had not tightened up, the free hub seemed to also be fine.

    Probably a stupid question…

    29er specific that…

they might not feel tight even if they are. Have a look inside.

What shall I see? I mean the way you can tell in a bearing is tight is by talking the wheel out and giving it a spin?

I have been doing exactly the same thing 😕

It’s not that, they don’t feel tight, I have taken the wheel out and had a feel, definitely muck and grit ingress. Shame Shimano don’t do a six bolt SLX hub 🙁

Edit: The bearings are still the ones that came with the hub, not had it that long about 5 months, shimano are a bit tight on grease so gave it a service.

are you sure the cones haven’t worked loose?

There isn’t any play in the wheel, and the lock nuts are still tight.

Hope rear hubs costs around £100? My bike ain’t that fancy to warrant that money being spent on it…

Deore M5XX and above have much better sealing.

    Deore 525 or XT 756?

Nothing against Hope, just the maintenance cost of new bearings and I’ll need the tools too. Are there any cup and cone hubs apart from shimano?

I’m 6’1 I have a Core at 19.5 with a 50mm stem. I would reckon that an 18 would be better, since it’s the type of bike to throw about.

Why a Genesis? The paint finish on my Core is terrible, frame is nice, but I should have got a soul.

I think it would look good, a few other red ano bits, so they don’t out of place and it’ll be fine. Only red anodised, no red brake cables or owt.

    a 9/36 cassette makes sense if your running a 1×10 with a 32 t ring.

But IMO the cost will probably be rather steep for a consumable item.

Also it seems the cassette doesn’t have those shifting ramps like the shimano ones do…?

I reckon hope should make us some nice looking cranks, shimano XT’s look crap IMO.

Been out riding today (Leeds woodland), a bit chilly but the ground isn’t frozen 🙁 a bit boggy in places, practised getting air and watched the DH guys do it properly.

Comparing Russia to England when it comes to cold and snow, apples and oranges. I have been to Russia in temperatures of -20 and I find it more unpleasant and colder here in the UK sometimes, the wind chill in combination with the constant dampness in the atmosphere make it so.

What if you get some 180mm SLX discs and run them with your current brakes (somebody confirm they are compatable) it will improve things for now then maybe get some SLX brakes to go with later.

I never used my 44t and wasn’t keen on its rock catching and flesh shredding ability, so went 2×9 I run 22/36 the 36 is used for pretty much all situations until I struggle and drop into the granny, a 24 or 26 might be better, 22 is too low to ‘push’ on the climbs?

Lots of buying going on here, good to see STWers helping the economy back to its feet.

The amount of stuff I have bought at my LBS, they have repainted the van and got new Fox hoodies for all the staff too. 😛

No purchases this week though 🙂 although a Thompson seat post is on the (bank) cards…

Off to Leeds today to get s Shirt and some T shirts.

Going away for a few weeks, but worried dirty crooks will break in and ride away on your beloved stead. Just use some muckoff; spray on thoroughly, wait a few minutes then rinse off with plenty of water, in a mearly 24 hours all moving parts will sieze and rust solid, completely immobalizing the bike, making it virtually impossible to ride away on.

all buses have an individual id tag on back give this no to the bus company

Yep usually just a number like 37448 or 452 (depending on the company), this number will be on the ticket as well, as the driver number, time and route number.

White would get dirty fast, although would look cool.

Red becomes a shade of dark blue in fading light so no. Plenty of people ride in high vis stuff, you may look a bit silly but you will be amongst many others so it’ll be fine.

When you are the only one in the county looking like a twonk, then is the time to worry.

mmm, fair point add in road tax, insurance, fuel and vehicle maintenance. But the amount of time wasted and the fact you still need a car for plenty of other things…?

Where is that, out of interest? oh and what is the main company.

Rubbish at my end round Braford/Leeds/Huddersfield, one bus an hour on my street, and most other services I use tend to have the same infrequency, coming on time is also great achievement.

Fares have been put up again aswell £2:80 to get into Leeds
