Come to Oman, if you can locate an affordable beer you can drink it.

For the those with the negative attitude, couldn’t that be applied to most sectors.

Probably, but you asked about Architecture.

I’m Part III qualified but not registered. My experience mirrors that of the others really:

Training – Part I was superb, brilliant. Year in practice was eye opening but he momentum carried me back to Uni. Part II was pretty much a step backwards and only sought to highlight the disconnect between Uni teaching and the realities of practice. Part III, if you’ve gone this far you might as well…

Post Part III – Long hours, terrible pay, near constant threat of redundancy,

    I left after 18 months.

Nearly 10 years on I have a couple of Architectural Practices as clients (100+ strong), things seem to be much the same.

On the plus side, the women on my course were spectacular specimens.

It was so awful I moved away.

I’m now in the slightly more awful Hope Valley in Derbyshire.

    Just bad luck I guess!

As above, if it’s losing / gaining lots of time it probably needs regulation or a service, if it’s not then don’t worry about it, the cost is often prohibitive. Just hold onto it.

Bear, unless you’re short I’d hold onto it, I suspect you’ve undervalued it as well by 100+ %. A full set is pretty well sought after. If you do sell I’d contact Mike at the oldwatchshop in Southport, he knows his beans and won’t short change you. Don’t sell it for 200 to the first person to mail you off here.

It’s easier to get a job from a job etc. but sometimes you need a kick up the arse – that’s the reason I walked, otherwise I’d still be doing what I was doing and utterly miserable.

Now: A cabin city on the Omani/Saudi border and some ancient oil infrastructure. Miserable.

    Thanks for the feedback,

The house has all the tell-tale signs of having been patched up in the past to address dampness, areas of new plaster and tiling, attempts at putting plastic barriers against the outside walls.

We have a radon monitor ticking away in the house to get an idea of whether there is an issue but our general feeling is that whilst there is upheaval (wiring and plumbing) we might as well investigate fitting a vented air system.

Yeah I read about that this morning, my Dad says that in Bahrain, UAE and Saudi things like this rarely amount to much and large scale war is unlikley with the US 5th Fleet on the Island, but you never know.

I’m watching what Oman have to say, if anything.

The sheer volume of people moving in the next two weeks will be immense.

    Hello from Muscat.

It’s not for everyone. I do a month on, month off. I’m still finding my feet but wouldn’t rule it out without taking a trip. Good luck.

    Respect to Kilo.

I’m self employed but work under contract to a couple of organisations building and auditing ISO Management systems (9001/14001/18001/27001/1090). It is what it is, plenty of time in a car but almost no office politics!

Tis not what I dreamed of but it keeps me in bikes and pancakes!

Get youreself straight over to the gas lamp district. You could easily kick around there for a half day, take a look at the war ships in the bay (from a distance), head to Mission or Pacific beach for a night out.

It’s a f’ing incredible place, I used to go 3 or 4 times a year with work (O&G) and can honestly say it’s one of the best places I’ve ever been.

Try this place for some food as well:

This is not the place but… If anyone wants a free snowboard and Vans boots drop me an email, would need to be collected today or tomorrow from just north of Newcastle, believe it’s a 5150 Empress 153.

High Bridge St – Bacchus for the best pint in Town IMHO, Pani’s cafe across the road for some lunch,

Head down to the river for the bridges and a wander, plenty of walking and shopping in the rest of the town, nowhere I’d suggest you avoid during the day but museums and galleries aren’t up to much. Try the Hancock/Centre for life/Discovery Museums if you’ve got kids.

It’s a brilliant city, Durham is nice but not worth missing Newcastle for.

Sunderland and Gateshead are utterly dreadful – and that’s not football allegiances talking.

Once again, thank you to all contributors,

We called at Market Harborough, Leamington Spa, Warwick, Stratford, Worcester, South Birmingham (Bourneville area), Solihull, Derby, Nottingham and Litchfield.

I won’t bore you with what we thought of each but for our own reasons we liked Warwick / Leamington as it mixed reasonable outdoor space, what appeared to be strong community/pubs/clubs (sporting) with good transport links.

Needless to say we can’t afford to rent in the town itself so need to consider an outlying village or similar, can anyone make a suggestion, the limiting factor is that we’d need to be 5-10 mins by bike to a train station.

    Thanks

Midlifecrashes – She’s a consultant of sorts so is based from home and travels widely – thus the need to be near good transport links, otherwise we’re largely free to pick where we want to be.

Thanks to all for the advice so far, we’re planning our route for this weekend around some of your comments.

Ps. I’m an Architect. It’s a fantastic couple of degrees but utterly useless if you imagine working less that 60 hours a week for a modest wage.

I’ve logged in for the first time in ages to post on this…

Whatever you do at 30 you’ll say “with the benefit of hindsight…”

Assuming you pick the University route, and I’m not it’s strongest advocate with two subject specific degrees in what turns out to be the wrong subject – two bits of advice:

    1. From my experience only a handful of Graduates go on to do what they thought they’d end up doing, pick a good university (Russell Group, regardless of what others say this does matter when you get to the sift) and a broad(ish) degree, not too specific, say mechanical/Structural Engineering. Don’t do work experience in the holidays, pursue women (…) instead, this is the best chance you’ll get. Fight light for you life to get on a graduate scheme with a big company (say Siemens, Nissan etc…) and jump ship after two or three years. This is when you’ll demand a real salary – ride the graduate scheme out.

    2. Nepotism works. If you know anyone – use them. That extends to asking on forums where people have common interests*.

Good luck. Enjoy yourself. At some point you’ll work out it’s not a race. :)

    * Mechanical/Structural/Acoustic/Drafting/Projects, in the North East drop me a mail.

I have a Naim Uniti (CD, Streamer, Amp, Radio) I’m about to put up for sale, it’d blow the doors off anything sub 3k, pre power etc.

    I admit it’ll be more than £300

I bought mine as a student house full of students. Their rent covered 85% of the mortgage, so I pretty much got the house for free (other than the deposit I paid). I spent their rent on doing it up eg new roof, kitchen, etc and one by one didn’t replace them as they left – ended up with a refurbished house for very little cost (to me).

A good move on your behalf, but not a massively viable option today for any number of reasons. Ho Hum. :(
