It’s a shame they waste resource on this, and not a highly popular suggestion for personal results filtered by bike.

Opted out once I found out how

Been there in the past, back into it a bit now, riding every week but I’m still not fully committed…but I go miserable if I haven’t got out for a few weeks.

A few things I’ve done (which others have rightly suggested)

    – do something different. I took up running, both trail and road (but prefer trail, road is more convenient). It’s hard at first, but once you pace yourself it’s fantastic. Almost the same as riding, without the nonsense before, during and after. Do have a few walks with the riding buddy over winter, however that’s more social than anything, but still good.

    – ride on your own. During lockdowns I started doing more longer, solo rides and really appreciated them more. My riding group was all about the pace, however they’re slowly catching up with enjoying the journey instead. But sometimes, a gentle solo ride with just you and the outside.

    – it’s been a horrendous winter. The trail bike has barely turned a wheel for months. If I rode it, the bike would be caked, I’d be caked and the trails would end up ruined. For me a gravel bike was a game changer for winter…not saying you should get one, but I’ve come to terms with not being able to ride trails 365 days a year, and it’s certainly more enjoyable.

Also don’t sell your kit, because the market is horrendous for sellers at the moment…plus when the suns out, the ground is dusty and the birds are tweeting, you might actually fancy going for a spin, even if it’s solo and with Strava only on to log your miles.

    I suspect it’s a lot of stop-start work.

to her credit though, 11 hours, even if not in the saddle for all that time, is an exceptionally long battle…and with 4 more days to do, she’s putting herself through it

    Agreed

Without a doubt I come back (on average) smiling more on the gravel than the mtb. Both can be ridden from home, but for some reason, every time I’m out on the gravel, it’s just a more fun for 90% of the time…perhaps it’s the adventure of going somewhere new/different perspective on nearly every ride, or doing the usual stuff just a little zippier , not sure

The Scandal hasn’t seen daylight since I got the gravel either, and I really enjoyed riding that too!

In this day and age, how can something like this happen??

    Absolutely appalling.

Make sure you email the CEO of the mortgage providers of the laid off staff aware, so they can submit repossession orders much sooner

….or maybe take acceptance that you made a mistake which contributed to this…

    Interesting concept.

To expand on a previous comment, I think you’d need a rather soft foam sole, to support the flexible chambers.

Also rather than a valve, if you had a suitably sized orifice between the two chambers, and the connecting tube was blocked every time you put your foot down/applied a force, I think you could have a rather stable shoe which could adapt to different cambers in a footstep or two.

Not sure on longevity of all though, but I guess Nike manage.

Edit: thinking about it, the two chambers would equalise in pressure, so al a long as the flow rate between them is controlled, it could be quite stable anyway

Ah I know what you mean…not great, not terrible.

I don’t trust my selling ability, so loosing £2.99 on the return postage is a bargain.

Also your edit confirms my fears that there are better bikes out there.

    Morning folks

Think I jumped the gun on this one.

Been looking more into the reviews and I think I bought the wrong bike.

Already shipped but probably won’t even open the box before she goes back…ah well

I went with black, but it was the only one in my size (medium).

Suffering a bit of buyer’s remorse, but it’ll pass.

Had have a plan yesterday to combine my two bikes into one (Airdrop Edit and On One Scandal). I was looking at the Aether 9, but this came along and pushed me over the edge.

Bit slow off the mark on the Bart Kay video.

Seen one of his videos before…he might be right, might be wrong, not interested as the man’s a condescending d!ck.

Watched a couple of minutes of this video and I couldn’t go any further.

I suspect that exercising for optimal physiological benefits and running speed/efficiency etc may be somewhat different.

I’m quite liking this thread, watching your lads progression is great to see.

It was early in the early pages that you need to be careful not to be a pushy parent and make it a misery for him…it’s clear that you’re not. You’re listening to what he wants to do and responding appropriately.

I feel some people maybe forgetting that all of this is for fun and enjoyment, not an all out push to be as close to the top spot as possible.

For a year or two now I’ve been struggling to justify the cost of mountain biking…the latest squeeze on disposable income isn’t making it any easier.

I can afford replacing parts etc, but it’s hard to justify purchasing X, Y or Z for a hobby, when we’re sat in the cold with no heating on.

And I’m not talking new bikes, general wear and tear components like tyres, brake pads and cassettes seem to be getting a bit out of hand.

I’m another who use the On One Scandal to do exactly what you describe. I’d recommend 2.6” tyres though, takes the harshness out of it when you get there.

Not sure on taxes etc. Have a look on their eBay page too, they often sell off returned frames with damage (scratches and paint chips etc.)

    Firstly, that’s an expensive 2%!

Never had to go through this etc, but I would have thought that the big financial decisions (such as dental and school trips) would have been discussed before committing whilst married, should also be discussed whilst divorced.

Also it’s pretty clear that the issue isn’t the money, and it’s not you’re trying to get out of support payments for your kid

In answer to you question, no, you’re definitely not being a dick. Is she?…all evidence presented demonstrates she’s a massive one

Bit of a damp but awesome 11 miler, 2000ft climbing on Saturday evening, but riding Sunday morning.

How do you folks balance the run/ride schedule? I can’t decide which one I’d rather do at the moment…much easier to answer in winter

Completely understand where you’re coming from.

I avoid “those” threads like it’s a big jump, and it’s all good. As someone once, if a thread exceeds 4 pages it’s not worth reading.

Let those who want to argue that grass is blue do that, and carry on as you were.

I’m a miles guy, always have been

Everything else is metric, but I guess it comes from driving

However this post has intrigued me, I may try swapping the units on the Garmin to see if I die…some of the points raised (I.e. OS map grids etc) are correct and are a bit sub-optimal

May have to recalibrate my legs too though, I have no sense of how fast 15km/hr or 5min/km is

I may have just gone 2+2=15, or stating the obvious, but your latest response muddies the water somewhat.

When I read your first post, my go to answer was absolutely don’t sell your bike, it’s your escape and enables a brief moment in time where your burdens are not weighing you down.

But…getting out on your bike is a struggle, both physically and emotionally. Physically, you have to get yourself ready, the car ready, the bike ready (in the car)…then when you get there, bike needs to be assembled out the car before you can go, realistically around 30mins at the beginning and end of your ride isn’t on your bike.

Then there’s what the bike means to you, which is primarily a reminder to what has been the worst time of your life.

With that, I would either sell it and when you can get something like a gravel bike/HT, or change its colour etc so that it doesn’t look like the same tainted memory.

As someone else mentioned earlier, have you tried running? Getting out on my bike was a right pain, but I can be out and back from a good run in 45mins…so long as you take your time, and run easy it can be quite pleasant…and it’s a great head clearer.

P.s. You 100% deserve your dream bike!

I guess my question is does a modern geometry hard-tail with high volume, big wheels outclass an old school 26” 4 inch travel FS bike?

It’s becoming a much more difficult decision between riding the Scandal or 27.5” Edit these days…the question being do I ride the HT again, or blow the dust off the FS.

With 2.6” wide tyres (other tyre widths are available), the modern HT is an absolute hoot to ride

    mtbqwerty

    Absolutely, I’d contribute

My only prerequisite is that a pic gets posted showing the bike being ridden (purely because I appreciate the benefits riding bikes can have, and I want the recipient to also receive a polite push out the door to look after themselves, as well as everybody else)

I’d say, yes, this was potentially a dangerous situation.

Maybe not for your child, but I image some would take great delight in trying to force the doors open further, or try and get a significant portion outside their body outside the doors.

Further, the doors were reportedly 8” open…how far can they be opened without fail safes activating.

    Definitely with a contact IMHO.

    Hi all,

Just thought I’d give a little update in case my post becomes relevant to someone in the future.

I looked online for a shortish travel FS…absolutely nothing that tickled my fancy, not one ticked enough boxes.

So instead I purchased some 29″ Hunt Trail Wide V2 wheels and 2x 2.6″ tyres.

My first ride was yesterday….what an absolute riot!! Most fun I’ve had on a bike in years. On bigger drops obviously made minimal difference, but they certainly took the edge off small stuff like root/rock gardens etc.

Sooo yeah, big volume tyres FTW

Thanks all for your input, enjoy!
