I guided a group on the route you suggested 3 weeks ago – a lot of hiking to Bealch na Lice but brilliant riding. I think Hairyscary’s route is the same. I’m a fan of the Lollipop like Bigjim – the descent into Coire Lair is awesome and the climb from Anat a good challenge. Probably best done in good weather as it climbs a lot higher. Ben Damph loop is great too – kind of like the loop you describe but easier. It’s quite tough for it’s length though – don’t see it as an easy half day unless you’re seriously fit.

As an aside, anybody traced their way south east from Kinloch Damph over Bealach a Ghlas Chnoic? Wondering if it goes?

As the author of the Black Mountains route in the Vertebrate book (and the Classic Ride in Singletrack a few months back), I’d definitely recommend the big Black Mountain loop over anything in the area. I tweaked the final climb and descent for the latest update on the Vertebrate Wales book – makes it totally rideable up and a better descent – but if you want a GPX of these, drop me a mail (address in my profile). Would offer to guide you myself but am currently out for at least 3 months injured!

From what I can tell, Brytons work on Garmin mounts but not the other way around.

Took a group their 4 weeks ago and had an amazing time. There’s a few options on Annat/Coulags loop, and the Ben Damph loop is excellent also; though a bit more than a half-day IMHO – that’s a big, slow, technical climb. Another good option is the track that crosses Applecross – out and back though but can be done with a great pub at half way! Drop me an email if you want GPXs – email’s on my profile

    Cheers

Pen y Pass Hostel will work for the walkers but there’s no access for bikes from there really. Rangers or Llanberis paths will be your best options.

For accommodation, there’s a good B&B in Rhyd Ddu – not far from the start of the Ranger Path and next to a decent pub http://www.snowdonaccommodation.co.uk Or Llanberis YHA or Snowdon Ranger YHA? Ben’s Bunkhouse in Llanberis is excellent too.

    Have fun up there!

Gave myself 10 rides after 25 years on spds but after 4 I was hooked and stopped making pull-up errors. Am now faster and more confident…

Still use SPDs on road bike obviously, but don’t feel that this has suffered in any way.

Just tested one – didn’t feel tail length was a problem and found the waterproofness/breathability excllent. But I found it a bit warm for mountain biking and going hard on the road bike (esp in hilly terrain) – perfect for easier going at speed where I had a good airflow. I’d wear it for commuting, very cold mountain biking, or if I didn’t ride too many hills.

    Can I recommend

Probably the only Lake District guide you’ll ever need – unless you want to take the author with you 😉

    Enjoy your trip…

When are you planning this for? There’ll be a new hostel in Dinorwig in the spring – looks like it’ll be great too.

Anybody that thinks we don’t need a ‘voice’ just consider that if we had a strong one, we may have achieved Scottish style access in Wales this year! Instead we weren’t even heard.

Can just see a minister busting a gut fighting landowners etc for a group that isn’t interested in changing things…

As Midlifecrisis said – decent short outing

Or if you really want to go into Wasdale, then you can climb/push up through Miterdale, drop from Irton Fell to Nether Wasdale, head up and around the lake then climb south to Burnmoor Tarn. Then descend into Boot. The climb to the tarn is a bit wet and horrible, or it was last time I did it!

Rab Generator or Xenon, which I think is a little lighter? Definitely worth carrying in winter and useful as a walking jacket year round in the mountains.

As above – definitely down to Kentmere for max fun – Jenkins Crag is good both ways but the descent to Brockhole from Troutbeck is fun too – less techie! All works well enough in winter.

AS above – the track down into Doethie is washed away but passable with a few walked sections. And there are problems with the land owner on the forest track that drops to the Chapel – he’s put gates etc across the track but again, they are all passable. Not 100% sure of the legality here but think he’s in the wrong.

Final question though, Doethie Valley? At this time of year? When it’s not frozen? a. It’ll be hard work and b. you’ll do some serious damage to a delicate trail…

I can let you have GPX trails for Moel y Ci (XC not downhill) and the slate quarries. Email on profile.

Wish people would stop encouraging cheeky riding on Snowdon. It’s not cheeky, it’s just plain disrespectful to some of our own who have put an awful lot of volunteer time into stopping a TRO being slapped on the mountain banning bikes altogether.
