We run trips to the Highlands and Torridon every April – not missed a day due to bad weather yet (i’ll live to regret that!). I’d say one of the best times of year to be there 🙂

I may be biased but could I recommend

Borrowdale, Lonscale Fell and Back o Skiddaw all in here.

Happy to fire you across some GPXs if you email me (in profile).

    Have a great weekend!

Highlands? Snowdon? Unless you’ve already ticked them?

Elan Valley is easier to get to from Cwm Carn than Doethie Valley. Probably best to link Pont Scethin with Coed y Brenin or Cadair another time 🙂

Cadair on a Sunday this time of year will be heaving… check out the Elan Valley, or Pont Scethin… email me (on profile) if you need GPXs etc

No hard sell honest, but we’re running a Torridon/West Coast weekend at the end of October. It’s not super cheap that’s for sure – but it is good value (IMHO). Check out the website http://www.mtbguiding.co.uk/torridon-weekends.html but note that it’s likely to be 26-29 not as advertised.

And to prove it’s not a hard sell, if you want some route suggestions, GPXs etc, just yell… email’s best 🙂

Wow! That looks like some climb… but i’d rather take the mtb if possible…

    Thanks all.
Tom, I have got your book and did consult it before posting. However I only looked at the chapter on South Wales, saw there wasn’t anything nearby and put it back on the shelf. I’ll try again.

No worries 🙂 Again, if you need more info or GPXs, shout!

There’s some good riding in the Irfon Forest – Llanwrtyd Check out the route in my book – sorry about the plug 🙂 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wales-Mountain-Biking-Tom-Hutton/dp/1906148139

I’m also of mixed views re the Doethie Valley – it’s always wet so perhaps a sensitive approach would work fine.

You’re also not far from the Beacons so the Gap would be a good all-weather option.

Give me a shout if you want some gpxs or general advice. Best to email mtbguiding@gmail.com

    I’d say that
    a. That route is huge… probably well over 3,000m of ascent!
    b. The majority of it would probably work better the other way round
    c. The section from Simonsbath to Cheriton isn’t a right of way for bikes.
I’d be more inclined to start in Minehead and make your route more E-W and not drop so far S

I’d agree with the post above – 30 miles is pretty hefty on Exmoor. I could probably find you a GPX for a 30ish route out of Minehead, taking in most of the best of the area. Also have a shorter loop out of Porlock you could potentially link to it. But I reckon you’d be on way over 2,000m of climbing with 50 miles – probably close to 3,000m.

I think some perspective is called for on Cadair being quiet. It still sees well in excess of 50,000 visitors a year. Now think that these will probably mainly be scattered over 9-10 months. And then very heavily weighted to weekends… around a half of Snowdon’s 500,000+ annual visitors climb the mountain on weekends. So you may well still get 200-300 on the mountain on a saturday. The good news is that you’ll only share the very top section with these, with the trails up as far as where it joins the Pony Path seeing very little walking traffic. It’s a great ride, as is Snowdon. Enjoy!

Surely if the mountain rangers (or whatever they’re called) see this group they can stop them?

It’s a Right of Way, so sadly not. This is where self-policing is called for. And fair play, the consensus on this thread seems to be pretty responsible. The NPA have become quite pro-mtb over the last few years and I think we’ll see a fair few access concessions coming our way as a result. Negative incidents will of course work against this.

Ryan’s just replied to my message: they’re going up 17-19th march. The saturday is the 18th. Good luck Ryan and gang!

Ooh! Think I’m guiding on the mountain that day 🙂 I predict carnage!

Wales has some of the most amazing mountain biking.

What the attraction of Snowdon is I’ll never really understand when there is so much else on offer

You could say the same about hillwalking too!

TBH I love riding Snowdon, and do it regularly. But always first thing – usually set off before sunrise and get down in time to start work! It’s an amazing place to be at first light when you have it pretty much to yourself. And the descent of the Ranger is brilliant when there’s nobody to get in the way!

In case folk are really believing the Llanberis Path would be good for a large group of bikes, here’s the path, just below the summit, at lunch time on October 2nd (so after the voluntary restriction is lifted). Restriction or no restriction, Snowdon is not a good place to be on a bike in the middle of the day on a weekend, at all but the very quietest times of year. http://pictr.com/image/EFpz5

Going with a 40 strong group of people I largely don’t know, could be interesting as never rode up there and the lads I do know never prepare for anything

    40? Seriously? What date?

    Sounds like a dream job.

    We think so 🙂

Not sure why folk think we’d rather sit in front of a screen?

    mtbguiding

I was/am one of that couple 🙂 (we still do it – 18 years now for me!) And Steph will be both thrilled and embarrassed at your compliment! She is still in the mag, just they use a lot smaller pics now – on the actual route pullout itself.

We’re also working on some more guidebooks so she will make an appearance there 🙂

There are a lot of myths about the route guide – perhaps some confusion too, as there’s always been a couple of mags doing them, and they are easily mistaken for each other.

So to try and answer some of them.

Sorry, but none of our routes are done from the screen of a mac/pc. We are paid to ride our bikes and go exploring, why the hell would we then sit in front of a computer? We spend around 9 months of the year chasing decent weather around the country riding and photographing routes – usually 2-4 day trips. We then feed them into the magazine every month to try and get a geographical spread.

There is no right and wrong way. There is often a way that most people think is better, but often they work well in both directions. Sometimes sticking to one direction, means never riding a great descent, because it’s always a climb.

If we miss out the best stuff, it’s either because we have covered it recently already, it won’t fit into the route length/difficulty we’re trying to achieve, or the best bit isn’t legit. I doubt very much that there are many ‘best bits’ in areas we have covered, that we don’t know about.

It has to be remembered that with our current access laws in England and Wales, there is actually a very finite number of good trails and good permutations of good trails.

So, if we repeat routes identically, it will be because we want to feature the area (and some of the great trails in the area), and there really isn’t a logical alternative. We try to avoid doing this within 3 years and even then, I’m pretty careful about what and where (Note: We actually only do 3 of the 4 routes in the magazine – the 4th is usually related to a feature on other pages, so this could be different.

Usually, we try to fit the really good trails into a few different loops so that they don’t get repeated identically. Sadly, this can lead to the previous problem of us then being accused of missing the best trails!

I’m sure that there are many others I’ve missed – sorry.

But if folks do have questions, feel free to contact me (email in profile), always happy to try and answer them, we take a lot professional pride in our work.

And also a big thanks to all those that sang our praises above – much appreciated!

Pont Scethin is the obvious classic really – awesome loop either direction. And if you’re good for longer distances, then start in the south, near Bontddu and make it into a kind of lollipop. I could also recommend a really good book https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wales-Mountain-Biking-Tom-Hutton/dp/1906148139 Well, I would, wouldn’t I! Email me (In profile) if you need a GPX for the above. Or anything else really…

Hey! I write the MBR routes, and run a few trips there every year, and yes, it’s awesome – World Class IMHO. There’s a few versions of roughly the same thing you can do depending on weather, how fit you’re feeling etc. Bein Damph is also great – like a shorter version of the former really. And the Coffin Road between Kenmore and Applecross is great, as suggested above. It’s definitely better as an out and back – the road is lovely, but seriously tough. You can head South East from Achnashellac too – less techie than the more popular routes but a real feeling of remoteness. I’ve probably got GPXs of most of them if you drop me an email (in profile).

    I’d say

    Pont Scethin
    Berwynion
Cowlyd (but you need a bit of masochism)
    Elan Valley
    The Gap, Brecon Beacons
    Black Mountains (Grwyne Fawr/Grwyne Fechan)

    For starters

Plug alert: I wrote a book about all this once 🙂 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wales-Mountain-Biking-Tom-Hutton/dp/1906148139

Drop me an email if you need any more info (email is in profile).

    And enjoy!

I’m not sure how you get the GPXs off those pages to check them on an OS map but from what I can make out I’d say definitely no problems with the Louhrigg one, and almost certainly no problem with the other. Most of the trails around Ambleside, Loughrigg, Langdales etc work well all year round. Enjoy 🙂

The regular quoting of the Kinder Trespass is quite funny really. Unless I misunderstand it, the Kinder trespass was the masses (working class wanting access to the hills) against the few (landed gentry). Typical of most protests really. The one being suggested here is the few (mtbers) protesting against the many (walkers/tourists/authorities etc). Think I can see how this one might end:)

Great to see the majority of my fellow mtbers can see a need for respect and consideration for others 🙂

Honestly who gives a monkeys about a TRO

Sorry, but I and many other mtbers around here give a very big monkeys’ It’s my local trail – I can ride it from my door – and I also guide on it. And much as I wouldn’t expect to bugger up other people’s local trails when I ride on them, I’d prefer it if people wouldn’t come here and bugger up mine.

Sad truth is, we don’t need to know both sides, all we need is people complaining directly to the NP… and it happens. Like I said, I reckon that considering the numbers, there are amazingly few issues, but if we want continued access, and even better, increased access to other parts of the national park, which is on the cards, then we could really do with fewer… The real moral of the story I am sure, is not to ride it during the day on a weekend.
